Tell me about your sofa

Are you happy with your sofa? What do you live about it? Where is it from?
I'm looking for a sofa with removable covers, ideally velvet ones, and at least 2.80 m wide, and/or possibly with a chaise unit.
Any suggestions much appreciated

Yes I love our sofa...but I'm afraid it's nothing like you've described Smile

Ours is ikea TIDAFORS 3 seater. With a lovely high back and incredibly comfy cushions. It's survived 6 years with 2 boys jumping and dancing on it every day, and has not given up the ghost yet. I am really impressed - we bought it cos it wasn't too expensive and had a high back, never dreaming it'd be so good.

My parents like it so much they've bought one too Grin

Thanks, Snow. I'm actually considering an IKEA sofa, the Vimle. While it doesn't come in Velvet, there is a company that does velvet covers for it and the total price is less than the equivalent (size wise) sofa from sofa.com or loaf.
Great to hear that your IKEA sofa is still going strong!

Ours are from SCS and we've had them two years. I think the design is called Brisbane. They're fab quality and have really firm memory foam type cushions which are what we wanted as DP has a back problem plus the cushions can be moved around. Everyone who visits says how comfy they are and I'd definitely recommend them.

ShortBook · 06/05/2018 18:18

We've got a large fama pacific sofa in the TV room - total width is about 5 m I think with a chaise section. Love it and sectional so can do all sizes but not sure they do velvet.

I think more what you are looking for would be something from sofa.com - they do some lovely velvet fabrics. We've got two stella sofas (smaller than what you want and not in velvet) but they also do the stella in a chaise (two sizes 251 and 286 cm). They do lots of styles though in the chaise and they definitely do velvet fabric.

Love your Home has beautiful velvet sofas. They will customise on size for a small extra sum.

MaraW · 09/05/2018 14:21

We spent a lot of money on a sofa from Willow and Hall, wouldn’t recommend it. Poorly constructed and bad customer service.

birkenstocks4ever · 09/05/2018 18:58

Just had sofa delivered from Sofa Workshop yesterday and I bloody love it! Their customer service awesome too - had delayed building works and then my mum passed away so couldn't tell them when we'd be able to accept delivery and they just left us alone and didn't bother us at all until we were ready for them. And they knocked extra money off after we'd ordered because they had a sale on over Easter. I'd highly recommend them. We got the Dillon sofa/chaise and armchair

Shortbook - we actually went to sofa.com and love the Stella sofa. Slightly overwhelmed by the choice of fabrics.
We would have to go for a wide sofa plus a separate footstool (from a different range) which would increase the price.

Also love the look of this: www.made.com/scott-4-seater-right-hand-facing-chaise-end-sofa-grass-cotton-velvet-5

However, covers can't come off and I'm not sure it would age well with two teenagers and a dog.
I just feel torn between looks and practicality. I'm bored of being practical ...

Bathildab - love your home... I had no idea about this company thanks for this tip.
There is so much choice!

MaraW - sorry to hear about your bad experience.
Will not look at this company.
Are you going to keep the sofa or can you return it?

Birkenstocks4ever, first of all, sorry about your mum.

I looked at the sofa - it's lovely and a really good size for us. What fabric did you go for?

I've got two large 3 seater sofas from John Lewis. I bought them online after our house flooded so I hadn't seen them or sat on them. I hated them from the start and they are sill here 11 years later. The cushions give no support and have to be fluffed up every day. I've been waiting till we move house to get rid of them.

LittleGreySheep · 09/05/2018 22:44

I hate my sofa. The low back only reaches halfway up my spine so I can't lean my head back. The cushions are attached and can't be turned over or replaced or sent away to be cleaned. And the fabric is a sort of felt material that has worn away where people sit so it has smooth patches that are no longer felt textured. When I buy a new sofa I'll be looking for a comfy high-backed one with removable cushions and hard wearing washable/wipeable fabric.

slinkysaluki · 12/05/2018 09:19

I have two dark grey Ektorp sofas from Ikea. Had them 18 months and still look good. They are sturdy (two boys 20 and 16 well over 6ft) and you can remove all the covers for washing. You can get different covers as well if you fancy changing the look. Very versatile and easy to keep clean, also cheap !

MissClarke86 · 12/05/2018 09:22

You probably don’t care about this but some people (like me) cannot bear the feel of velvet shudder, it’s like nails down a blackboard...so if you do a lot of entertaining you might find some people can’t sit on it Grin Obviously if it’s just for you and your family it doesn’t matter though.

birkenstocks4ever · 12/05/2018 09:31

Thanks viktoria x
We went for Graphite which is quite a hard wearing tweedy type fabric. They had some beautiful velvet samples in the showroom though- if I could have persuaded DH that's def what I would have gone for!

tavala · 12/05/2018 10:03

I have a leather sofa from Heals which is 10 years old and a Chesterfield sofa which is 35 years old (used to be my parents). Both were expensive when bought new but both still look fantastic. A good leather sofa gets better with age. Don't expect to replace either for years.

goldierocks · 15/05/2018 15:28

Hello @viktoria

I'm in the middle of house renovations. My living/dining room is very long but on the narrow side. I was looking for a corner sofa that is 2x6 seats with removable covers and a possible chaise-end. I found this company which lets you design your own sofa from scratch. Prices seem very reasonable.

I've ordered some fabric swatches and am off to read reviews. On the face of it I'm chuffed that I've designed exactly the sofa I want as I couldn't find one anywhere else.

Hope this info helps!

sdaisy26 · 23/05/2018 19:51

I have a sofa & loveseat from Loaf. The loveseat is yellow velvet. I absolutely adore them, they are so comfy and just feel v. special. They weren't cheap though and I don't let the DC anywhere near them!

bouncydog · 24/05/2018 06:46

Bought 3 sofas from sofa workshop about 18 years ago. Cost a small fortune but have lasted well and we are now getting them re-covered in velvet! Upholsterers were very impressed with the quality and they were worth doing. They have also made some different style back cushions so we can have a formal style and a loaf about style!

helenrhardwick · 24/05/2018 06:54

The Loaf ones are lovely but not practical for dog/boys bouncing on them! Ours is very chunky large tan leather, seemingly indestructible and easy to clean! Really comfy too, love it!

matchingpjs · 24/05/2018 07:07

I've got a huge Habitat Louis velvet sofa. It's still perfect after ten years and will seat four people. The covers are removable and although supposedly dry clean I wash them about once a year and they're fine

viktoria · 23/06/2018 18:29

Thanks everybody for your comments. I just wanted to give you an update.
We decided on an IKEA sofa in the end - the Stockholm 2017. Not massively wide ( about 2.50m), but very deep (about 1.15m) and very comfortable - well, the dog seems to like it.
All in all substantially cheaper than any of the other options I considered.
Instead of a chaise we decided on a footstool.
Again, thanks for everybody who commented.
