It's for above a fireplace. I've had my eye on it for a while but I guess it's a bit impersonal.

Otherwise possibly thinking of something like this

Honestly I'm rubbish at all this home decoration malarkey.

Room is decoration neutral with very light seafoam colour cushions and curtains.

I like the second one. Full of personal or special photos!

Chocamocca179 · 26/03/2018 18:44

I agree with a pp about a mirror looking better. I've a lovely mirror over my fireplace and the chimney breast behind it is done in a feature wall colour, which makes everything stand out.
I personally don't like pictures over the fireplace, preferring to dot them around the other walls, as I don't think they make a great focal point

MrBennOfFestiveRoad · 26/03/2018 18:46

I love the prints here:

www.boldandnoble.com/collections/prints

There are some nice butterfly and nature themed ones.

TommyandGina · 26/03/2018 18:48

I've got this in my lounge, I love it and it gets lots of compliments.

I think if you're having a picture it should be able to create conversation between others.

Try King & McGaw, they have loads of art prints

Dontknowwhatimdoinghere · 26/03/2018 19:23

But Bluntness what original can you buy in a reasonable size for that amount of money?

eloisesparkle · 26/03/2018 19:26

I love the sparkly butterflies - (the clue is in my name Smile)
and have wanted it for so long but just can't justify it as money is a bit tight Sad

Sleepygiraffe · 26/03/2018 19:28

Thanks everyone, don't know what to think now.

I'm not keen on mirrors around the house, they creep me out a bit (I know I'm weird).

I guess when you say that artwork says something about the owner, mine would say, the owner is really boring. This would probably be true!

Would it be really bad to have nothing above the fireplace?

I really want this

Have a look around your local area, see if there's any original art work you like.

fabulousfrumpyfeet · 26/03/2018 19:32

I agree with others that they are quite bland. In a neutral room you could get away with something a bit bolder. Any famous artwork you like that you could get a framed print of? I have a couple of originals by local artists that we're not very expensive but I really love them. Any small local galleries?

joystir59 · 26/03/2018 19:34

Bloody bland

BringBiscuits · 26/03/2018 19:36

Yes I do think you probably need something. Can you print a favourite photo on a big canvas? Or turn a photo into black and white? My brother has a huge close up of his dogs face in black and white with just the collar in red and red accents in the room. Perhaps you could do something along these lines? Makes it more personal and interesting?

Pluckedpencil · 26/03/2018 19:37

Sparkly stuff makes me smile, so I rather like it actually!

picklemepopcorn · 26/03/2018 19:42

There is nothing wrong with it, but nothing right either.

Think of something you love, and try and find something related. It could be a place, an animal, a colour...

Or maybe find something personal that you want to keep, and work around that. A favourite shirt or bag. Find a way to incorporate that into an artwork.

Hmmalittlefishy · 26/03/2018 19:44

What part of the picture is it you like? The butterflies? The sparkle? The pattern they make?
If you can think what draws you to it maybe you can look to see what else is similar but not as generic
Although if you like it you like it and you have to live there so there's no point in putting a fancy pants arty picture up because randoms on mumsnet said so but you actually hate!

PistFump · 26/03/2018 19:46

It's okay... not entirely to my taste but inoffensive. My pet peeves for wall art are inspirational quotes, and images split across 3 canvases.

EgremontRusset · 26/03/2018 19:47

How about a map? One of my favourite things is an old map of our area, in a plain frame. If you search on amazon for ‘old map Lincoln’ or wherever you live you will find lots of reproductions and some originals too.

elQuintoConyo · 26/03/2018 19:56

We have this above our mantelpiece (that's not our sofa!).

I visit small galleries and student end of term shows etc and just buy stuff i like.

Honestly, do you like this wall art?

Joy it says the link isn't secure, have you got another one or a website, would like to have a look Smile

elQuintoConyo · 26/03/2018 20:05

Egremont excellent idea. Old maps are fascinating - especially if it is somewhere important to you: grandparents' house, where you went on honeymoon, Blackpool tower through the ages!

NewJob123 · 26/03/2018 20:08

Nothing looked right above mine apart from a mirror. I don't think either will look great that you've posted.

Sleepygiraffe · 26/03/2018 20:20

I've got this in a cupboard somewhere not being used. It's not my actual one but a picture of it I found on images. Can you tell I like butterflies?

My favourite colour is teal/duck egg, and the only colour I really like in my home, but as my curtains and cushions match, I tho thy it might look a bit naff to have a matchy piece of wall art too.

I could get something blown up I guess.

Maybe I'll have to rethink the mirror.

Honestly, do you like this wall art?

Find an actual paper cutter to design something for you that’s unique and interesting :)
