Two tone kitchens

We are having a new kitchen and considering two tone.

Dark grey for base units and off white for wall units. I've seen a lot about recently but do you think it will date quickly?

I think it looks nice but will date. I’d personally choose one colour.

I like that idea too but maybe Purple is right about it dating more quickly - I hadn't thought of that.

I also like 2 different worktops - wood mainly then quartz /composite on island or perhaps the other way round.

I disagree - I don't think it will date. It has become more mainstream in recent years but I don't see it as a fad. I think you can create lots of interest and dynamism with two tones.

Re the worktops though - if you have a two tone kitchen, you need one worktop to tie it altogether or it will look too messy. Fine with a single tone kitchen though.

I saw a lovely kitchen, the base units were pale blue/grey and the island was dark navy. It looked amazing.

Whatever you choose will probably date so you might as well have what you like now.
If it's a painted kitchen presumably it could be different colours in the future?

I'm looking dark grey on the bottom and around the fridge, and off wall units. The kitchen isn't big enough for an island

It is north facing so, even though there are patio doors and a big window, it's not terribly light.

I think we'd go with a light grey worktop.

We had a light grey worktop for years - it was very practical and always looked good. I loved it.

It is hard to know what will date. I think grey may be as dating as anything else (our kitchen fitter has only fitted grey in the past few years so was delighted when ours was not).
If you really like it that should be all that matters as you have to live with it!

Outlook, I wonder about the grey / pale blue / grey / bluey grey green trend. Much though I love it I worry it will date.

I think anything will date. I tried to avoid being fashionable and was picking ‘classic’ which just ended up looking a bit 2011, so we went dark grey in the end.

village, the worktops were white quartz and the floors were limestone. The walls were very pale silvery white.
I saw it when it had just been finished so with no clutter and it was gorgeous .

I have charcoal base units, with white tall units and love it. We have a light grey quartz on both worktops. I don't care if it ages, it's better than the pine Ikea kitchen we had before!

ohwhataday that sounds just gorgeous, and hotelduvin I like the sound of charcoal with white too.

From reading this thread I have decided to go with what I like (but how to choose - so many are lovely) and forget about what might date.

Our last long-term kitchen was 28 years old when we sold and I loved it as much then as when we put it in: white cabinets (Texas Homecare - anyone remember them?) grey slightly mottled laminate worktop and white ceramic herringbone tiled floor with grey grout (very forward thinking for 1988!). It was fab and ok it might have dated a bit (pretty blue wall tiles between worktop and cabinets) but overall it stood the test of time and still looked lovely. Pine kitchen table in the corner. I miss the homely feel which is why I'm going for Shaker style.

I've just had my kitchen done in off white with a few charcoal units. I hope it doesn't date!

Everything will date. Even if you think it looks classic someone will decide it is dated. Might as well just go with what you love now. We got a grey kitchen because we liked the colour. I expect in 5 years people will look at my kitchen and say “omg, that is soooo 2017, I’d have to rip it right out”. But really, as long as I don’t stop liking it that is the main thing.

Thanks everyone. The kitchen in our current house is about 20 years old so everything is dated I supposed.

We've had grey and yellow in our sitting room for about 5 years now, when it was still quite hard to get grey carpet, and I'm a bit annoyed that it's everywhere now.

However I do really like it and I think a mix of units will really suit the house. It's a 1920s/30s house with a 10 year old extension. There's nothing very special or character about it so doesn't really fit ultra modern or very country living. I think this will work well.

It will look almost exactly like this (but different worktops)

I'm planning two tone too, a dark turquoise grey on the bottom and a pale grey on the walls. I'm hoping to get a stainless steel worktop and grey and white mosiac tiles on the floor. Glass splashback.

Grey has always been my favourite colour, so I don't care how quickly other people think it will date!

I have units the same colour of grey but with white splash back and surround it’s nice. I don’t care if it dates as we can get it painted.

I have proper kitchen envy lucky. They are beautiful.

Alas, mine's not that big.

The bonus is that even if it does date (I have a charcoal island unit and lighter units elsewhere) these type of kitchen are wood so you can paint them (well, get someone to pain them). In the meantime you've had a kitchen that you've loved.
