Adding colour to boring room

Hi all,

I'm a bit rubbish at home decorating. I have a very neutral sitting room. It's got pale biscuit coloured walls and carpet, dark brown sofas, a dark brown rug, dark brown curtains, cream coloured cushions on the sofa and oak furniture (coffee table, bookcase, tv unit and side table). It's a good size room, nice and light too.

I am SO BORED with it. Can't afford to redecorate or replace sofas (they are only 2 years old and in great condition, plus comfy!) but I need to add some colour!

We went a bit neutral mad when we bought the place - I think because every room was painted in such headache inducing colours I was desperate to change it (think bright orange sitting room, bright pink kitchen).

What colours will go nicely with what I've already got? Can change cushions, rug, curtains and add accessories. Any suggestions?

Teal could work, I will have a look. Was thinking of something blue-y but everything I've seen seems a bit pale, so will keep looking.

Can't do orange, the orange that was in the room before we moved haunts me! Grin

I would try lifting it with some greenery- couple of big plants in nice pots- makes a big difference. Also think of different patterns a bit like this

Yes, I do need some patterns. It just feels a bit lifeless. My cushions are spotty but that's it. Big plants would be nice, but a bit of a no-go at he moment due to a rampaging 17 month old who'd love nothing more than to rub soil into my cream carpet, unfortunately!

Have just brought a couple of lovely rugs from this site and am so pleased with them. I was desperately short of colour and pattern and I seem to have transformed the whole house with just a few bright rugs and some patterned cushions. I might have also given in and brought some lovely storage jars for the kitchen and bathroom but they will be introduced slowly in the hope the other half doesn't notice.
