Looking for inspiration as to what to put on a long window ledge in the living room. There are only so many candlesticks and flowering plants one can use. What interesting art can I put on there? Or what else? I look in the shops and just see a pile of wank. What is tasteful and timeless?

Well it’s that or suckling from a breast, Rachel. You choose. Merry Christmas

OP,

Watching this thread with interest: in need of inspiration myself.

Sunlight through coloured glass looks pretty, and throws out nice rainbow reflections.

(Assuming your kids are old enough for it not to be one massive danger) what about a few interestingly-shaped bottles, though unless you've got a dusting fetish, I'd limit the numbers:
[e.g. hobbyturmix.com/szines-uvegek-es-hangulatok/ ]

You could weight (some of?) them down with marbles, which would add to the prism effect, though might perhaps prove too irresistible for younger kids.

Sadly, my nosy cat means glass is a no-go at mine...so I've just got the usual candles/ photos in non-breakable frames. Bit predictable!

Ruhrpott,

What a gorgeous view you have from your window.

What an even more gorgeous marmalade cat that is. True to type, he/she obviously considers the sill his/her personal suntrap.

Thanks for all the compliments. We live in South Wales so lots of lovely views around here and lots of steps!

The marmalade cat is a very entitled girl! We also have a second equally windowsill loving decoration who knocks everything off in her way. She prefers the kitchen windowsill though.

Dust on ours!

Tbh with all the drawing of curtains things would get knocked off.

Benedikte2 · 30/09/2017 13:20

Thierry you're right it was only plated silver. Estimated to date from 1890's, I think, still in box with fish slice and looked like they'd never been used. Obviously a gift from the peasants on the marriage of the Lord of the Manor's daughter. What's this she said, before consigning it to a drawer for 120 years.

A winter sitting room sounds very nouveau and made up

I'm guessing a fish fork (not forgetting the fish knives) must be what the lower middles eat their fish fingers with.

Allthebestnamesareused · 30/09/2017 14:07

Three glass hurricance lamps in a row, with coffee beans in (rather than sand) to stand a large cream church candle in each.

AutumnalLeaves38 · 30/09/2017 16:36

Now, coffee beans for anchoring candles is a genius idea! Bet the fragrance is lovely, when they're lit. Do you have to replace them every so often, or does enough oil remain even with the air exposure?

Definitely pinching that idea, Allthebest. Thanks.

Ruhrpott,

Your second scenery-plus-kitty is equally beautiful. Smile
South Wales: no wonder.

I haven't ever replaced them and I nicked the idea from a Neptune catalogue a few years back

PickAChew · 30/09/2017 18:40

Surely a fish fork is one specially adapted to be easier to use if you have find instead of hands.

I often have a child on my windowsill.

BuzzKillington · 30/09/2017 18:44

I have 2 small tin pots with hyacinth bulbs in. I like it when the green shoots poke up through the moss, but hate the actual hyacinth so get rid before that bit happens. (I realise I sound insane)

reflexfaith · 30/09/2017 18:48

Dust mildew and silverfish

reflexfaith · 30/09/2017 18:48

And in My Winter Palace I think it's mostly mice droppings

buckeejit · 30/09/2017 20:19

@ThierryEnnui funnily dh always used to pick the sweet peas & would put a little vaseful, (don't think that's a word but vase full doesn't seem right either), on my bedside table. One of the things I love most about him.

Anyways, now I tend to cut the sweet pea more as I find it so relaxing, but always leave my bedside free!

Bitchywaitress · 01/10/2017 14:45

I don't have anything on my window sill due to the lack of social mobility I've faced having gone to comp school. There is some wood panelling but I'm scared of it.

Bitchywaitress · 01/10/2017 14:52

Very scary as it looks like Public School.

allegretto · 01/10/2017 14:57

All our windowsills are on the outside!

No, I agree. I like the idea of them but hate the smell.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 01/10/2017 15:19

My vestible is full of cobwebs. It doesn't get used as much as I'd like.

SandyDenny · 01/10/2017 15:22

Crumbs1 - why do you have flowers in a cupboard? Don't they die from lack of light?

justdontevenfuckingstart · 01/10/2017 15:22

My vestibule got used 3 times last night.

I have ordered a glass vase with silk orchids stands 1130mm high to put in front of my french doors, will probably last two weeks before the dogs destroy them. My little windowsill has a phone, mould, dust, cobwebs and fag ash on it.

Fantasticmissfoxy · 01/10/2017 15:33

In the country house drawing room we don't have window sills - they're rather common.l and generally only found in cottages (like the sort the staff live in)
There is a small inlaid mahogany table below the east window and it tends to hold a bowl of quince or greengage from the glasshouse (provided the head gardener has remembered, dear man)
In the city mews house I have some photographs of my over-achieving yet charming children (I have 9) in solid silver engraved frames and some lovely trinkets I picked up on our last trip to Iceland 🇮🇸
