Roman blinds - inside or outside recess&?

Rectangular shaped living room/diner with two smallish windows on long walk. Bedrooms the same. Thinking Roman blinds rather than curtains but not sure if they would look better in or outside the recess.

Any opinions?

I personally prefer blinds outside the recess.
If they are inside you have to think about anything on the window sill. So if you are regularly pulling blinds up and down ornaments and photo frames etc can be in the way. Also for cleaning the windows outside is easier.
Inside blocks light out a bit more that outside recess.
If you are making them yourself as I did it can be easier not having to be so accurate for inside recess but that's more to do with my skills ( or lack of them )

We have roman blinds in every room and they're all inside the recess. Makes the room feel bigger. No issues wihbstuff on windowledges - just need to keep 2 inches closes to the windowpane clear.

Hi, I'm wanting to fit the house out with roller blinds. Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to have them measured and fitted in a 4 bedroom house (I can't do it myself as don't think it would be wise climbing and trying to fit them while I am pregnant with kids running around and hubby is away for a few weeks right now)

Just did my house with blinds. I put them all inside the recess. We don't put stuff on the window sills anyway and we have nice frames for our windows with good details on the trim (old house). They make the rooms look bigger and very light.

Blinds are way more expensive than you would think ime.

I'd pretty much decided on inside recess, but having been in to measure up (new build that isn't ready yet) I've realised that I didn't check the depth of the window or the window openings. I think they open inwards so that's going to rule out recess isn't it? So annoyed as I do think for our particular windows (two separate windows quite close together in each room) inside recess would be a better look.

We have a new build with inward opening window. I overruled the blind fitter and had them inside the recess, my logic being I will almost never have the blinds down and the window open(near a main road so need windows closed for noise insulation). Would you be opening the windows a lot as well as having the blinds down? You might be able to fit the roller above the bit of the window that actually opens, if you are lucky with window design.

Thanks Dandelion. I suppose I'm concerned about not being able to open the windows at all if the fitting gets in the way. Ideally I'd wait until I get in before deciding, but then that'll leave me with no window coverings as I'm not planning curtains.

We had a bit of a wait for curtains/blinds (company we booked and who measured initially were unreliable, had to start again, all took much longer than expected) so we cut our losses on the living room windows and accepted people would be able to see in for a bit. I bought a travel blackout blind from the nursery section of John Lewis which suckers onto the window - meant we had privacy and could sleep whilst waiting for fittings, and that meant we didn't have to worry about measuring up before moving in. My sympathies though, it is so frustrating having everything so close but feeling like the pause button is being held down by someone else.

I know, it's a pain isn't it. Annoyingly in the clearout before selling the old place I got rid of our travel blackout blind. I can live with waiting for all the rooms apart from two bedrooms both of which have two windows. I really don't want to put a curtain rail up, and as we'll need to do made to measure blinds don't want to get it wrong and waste ££££

I have bought 2 from blinds2go, as recommended on another thread,
and have been very pleased with them (I was quoted about £600 for 1 blind for my living room from John Lewis, and it was about £150 from blinds2go).

For anyone with inside the recess ones from blinds2go, what size are the fittings that attach to the top of the recess. Trying to work out whether what clearance space from the top needed to be able to open the window. I know opening the window would push at the blind itself, but not sure re the fittings!

@WhatWouldThe DoctorDo, do you mean a fan light window? I have a blinds2go recess blind but I'm struggling to work out what you mean, sorry.

Thanks 321. It's not easy to explain, sorry! I'm trying to work out how much space from the top of the recess I need clear to be able to open the window without hitting any fittings (rather than the blind itself). So basically the size of any hard fixings applied to the top of the recess?

Why would the window hit the fittings? The windows open outwards don't they?

Can you post a picture of the window in question? I have roman blinds at most of my windows and they don’t interfere with the workings of the window at all.

Inside. Outside looks like you bought off the peg ones rather than bespoke. It also drowns small windows.

The fixing brackets for Roman blinds are tiny, even on wide, heavily lined blinds.
