Mustard coloured bedroom walls ...

... too much, or go for it?

I have wanted to decorate my bedroom for ages, but can't decide on a colour. I've been through all the neutrals - it is currently a sort of creamy beige off white - had moss green in the past, tried darker feature walls, and had a deep red wallpaper at one stage - all sorts.

I rearranged it last weekend, completely changed the configuration and removed two large items of furniture and got rid of some other clutter, so it looks bigger now, but very bland and cold with the 'magnolia-ish' walls. Also I recently decoupaged a chest of drawers and a dressing table and if I do say so myself they look fab, but just don't 'pop' against the bland wall colour.

I have nothing in my room that will 'clash' with anything. I have lots of different bedding and throws, of various hues, so can change that easily, there is a wooden venetetian blind at the window and I have stripped floorboard floor- no rugs.

I want a colour that will make the now fairly sparse furnishings 'pop' and I remember a friend once painting her lounge in this mustard/honey type colour and loving the shade, so I'm wondering if it might work in my bedroom. I do not want 'yellow' - I want a proper mustardy colour - darker rather than lighter, but I'm wondering if it will be too much?

I want to paint all four walls - no feature wall (which I've tried in the past and it just doesn't suit the shape and size of the room) and the skirting and door frame etc would be white.

Attached is the sort of shade I am thinking of and would appreciate any thoughts?

I love the white against it, but I'd pick a 2nd colour to contrast with it and break it up a bit - purple or grey works well with mustard, I think they've used a dark purple (or maybe brown) throw and chair in your example.

Not keen on the grey but I like the idea of a shot of dark purple.

The decoupage is multi-coloured but all quite vintage/muted. I bought a selection of fab papers off eBay - old French and German artwork - a fashion newspaper called 'Le Petit Echo de la Mode' with drawings of glamorous French women and then things like vintage roses with Latin names and one with old 'balloons' as in the ones with the baskets that people fly in. Background colour paint is 'greige' chalk paint (wish I'd gone for something bolder now) which just gets lots against the walls. On the big chest of drawers, each one is done in a different paper, and on the smaller 'dressing table' the drawer fronts all match. I can maybe try and take a couple of pics.

When I was working on them in my kitchen they looked fantastic, but bringing them back upstairs to my bland bedroom, they just lose all their impact.

Hence me thinking about going 'bold' with the walls.

Oh wow, the decoupage sounds fab (would love to see photos), the papers were a great find. I think they could look great against the mustard (and dark purple). You're right that they probably need a darker wall colour to make them pop.

I love that colour especially with white woodwork.

I love mustard. A very dark teal would also look good with it.

On the photos they look very 'busy' because of all the pattern, but in fact up against the beige walls they look dull.

On the bigger Chest of drawers it's only the drawer fronts and the top - the sides are just in cream chalk paint. The pattern, as busy as it looks on here, isn't half as colourful as you might think.

Anyway - I've bitten the bullet and just got back from B & Q with 5 litres of mustard paint. Gonna start tonight!

I really don't like it, I'm sorry, I've seen it in real life and don't think it looks good and certainly not as lovely as the pic. However I don't like anything yellowy on walls. I also don't like mustard clothing, so maybe it's just a color I don't like. I do think teal is gorgeous though and very fashionable at the moment, if that matters,

I know it's a risk bluntness. I don't like yellow either and that is my concern, but I've had pretty much every other colour so wanted to give this a try.

I've got the colour mixed and it's a proper dark mustard, so I'm hoping it will be ok. If not, I'll paint over it!!

We have that colour in our kitchen (India yellow) and it's gorgeous. I didn't like the testers at all but believed the woman in the shop who advised us and everone comments on how nice it is.

Our bedroom is that colour and has been since we painted over the lurid pink there when we moved in. Its warm and relaxing, we have dark browns along with it and I've no plans to change it!

I love mustard, we used it in the bathroom. Dark grey towels look good with it, so do purple

That's exactly what I'm after. At the moment it's just cold and bland.

I've got a gorgeous Indian crushed velvet bedspread and sumptuous cushions ... but even that doesn't make the room feel cosy at all. I don't know what it is about this room and the house in general is very cosy and nearly everyone who visits remarks on it.

I am very much old school, shaker, vintage and even a bit of shabby chic (yeah I know!) just old and unusual quirky bits and pieces .... but no matter what I do to my bedroom, it just never feels right.

Hopefully moving the furniture around and bringing a bit of colour in will help.

Just done a test wall and it's looking good!

If it dries darker even better, but even wet, I am absolutely loving the colour.

Also have India yellow in our kitchen, it's gorgeous.

Just on walls with units, the empty walls are deluxe polished pebble.

I've been back on forth for this for months, and I'm so chuffed I'm actually doing it.

Long story short, I spent over 200 quid on paint back in May to decorate the whole house. Much needed, single mum, two (now grown up but both still students) kids, not much money. Got the bathroom done and then my mum got very sick - died 6th June.

All thoughts of decorating then went out of the window, until I got a new bed for my son (away at uni) so had no choice but to decorate his room as it was really scruffy.

Went to get the paint from the shed and it had all been nicked. The whole lot!!!

I can't remember what colours I bought to be honest, so although I did buy paint for my bedroom, it was probably something neutral, mushroom or summat.

Now here I am splashing 'mustard' all over the place and I've got you lot to thank!

I have a mustard bedroom with dark wood furniture and woven baskets full of shite under the bed etc.

It's very cosy, but bright when the sun hits it.
