Mustard coloured bedroom walls ...

... too much, or go for it?

I have wanted to decorate my bedroom for ages, but can't decide on a colour. I've been through all the neutrals - it is currently a sort of creamy beige off white - had moss green in the past, tried darker feature walls, and had a deep red wallpaper at one stage - all sorts.

I rearranged it last weekend, completely changed the configuration and removed two large items of furniture and got rid of some other clutter, so it looks bigger now, but very bland and cold with the 'magnolia-ish' walls. Also I recently decoupaged a chest of drawers and a dressing table and if I do say so myself they look fab, but just don't 'pop' against the bland wall colour.

I have nothing in my room that will 'clash' with anything. I have lots of different bedding and throws, of various hues, so can change that easily, there is a wooden venetetian blind at the window and I have stripped floorboard floor- no rugs.

I want a colour that will make the now fairly sparse furnishings 'pop' and I remember a friend once painting her lounge in this mustard/honey type colour and loving the shade, so I'm wondering if it might work in my bedroom. I do not want 'yellow' - I want a proper mustardy colour - darker rather than lighter, but I'm wondering if it will be too much?

I want to paint all four walls - no feature wall (which I've tried in the past and it just doesn't suit the shape and size of the room) and the skirting and door frame etc would be white.

Attached is the sort of shade I am thinking of and would appreciate any thoughts?

Well still at it. Worst colour ever for coverage! Had to do 3 coats and I can see there are still patches but will have to wait till daylight tomorrow to see properly. Also had to nip out to a well known DIY store to get extra paint and there appears to be a problem with the colour match. Won't know for sure until daylight tomorrow but if there is I will go apeshit - long story.

Can we have a sneak peek? I'm excited on your behalf!

I have F&B Babouche - quite mustardy - in my living room with dark brown on the panels and skirting - F&B London Clay. I know it's not to everyone's taste but I love it.

Good luck Fontella!

Hi all,

Well it's all finished!!

Stopped painting last night and this morning got some bits of furniture back in. It's not perfect yet - I need to change my central lampshade for a start (it's that bright red montrosity - but I've put it back up for the time being as I have nothing else). One thing I didn't mention is that I'm self employed and work from my (small) bedroom (hence the two dirty great big computers), so I had to get back in today so I can work and earn some money!

I've taken a couple of pics - not sure if they are any good, and as I said, I've still got to move bits around etc. and get it how I want it.

Anyway, thanks again for all the support. I'm just so glad I've got it done as it was a tatty mess, and whether you love the colour or hate it - it is at least freshly decorated and a million times better than it was!

Love it love it! Well done. It was a risk worth taking and the decoupage look great, and great with the paint.

PrisonerofBrenda · 07/03/2017 17:16

Wow! What a transformation! I love it - well done Fontella.

Fontella · 07/03/2017 19:04

Awww thanks both!

I really appreciate it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it just feels so warm and cosy now, and having to work in it every day, it was driving me nuts as it was.

I would never have got on and done it without this thread! Thanks again to everyone who helped put a boot up my arse to go for it.

Love it!! I wish I was more bold with paint choice as that looks stunning.

Trust me, I'm not usually so bold! My house is a testament to blandness, but after I'd decoupaged the old drawers in the fancy papers, and then saw all the colour and impact drain out of it as soon as I put it in my bedroom, I knew I had to put something colourful on the walls to make it 'pop' otherwise all that faffing about had been in vain.

I just remembered that friend's 'mustard' lounge from years ago, posted here, got the encouragement and went for it!

Onto the lounge next and I'm thinking 'pink'. No kidding!

That looks amazing.
I'm very "safe" when it comes to wall colours, but I love my sage green dining room. I wish I could be brave enough to try strong colours elsewhere.

The computer desk rather lets it down. Have you any plans for it?

Not really at the moment. I need a big desk for both computers, and I simply can't afford to replace it. I suppose a paint job to spruce it up a bit might be an option, but it can't disguise the fact, I need to work out of my bedroom at the moment, as there is no space anywhere else. Small terraced house with limited space.

Best bet would be if one of the kids moved out and I could use one of their rooms as an office, but that's not going to happen any time soon as both are still students.

I do have a lovely old Victorian bamboo room screen, which positioned correctly would partition off the work area ... but I need to shift things around a bit.

As I said, I had to rush to get the furniture back in yesterday morning as I need to work, but this weekend I'll have another look at positioning things in a better way.

The main thing is it's painted and done and I'm very happy for that!

It's lovely : ) Our new house has a mustard kitchen. It's not something I would ever have considered myself but I really like it, I'm glad the previous owners were so much braver than I am, and I'm never going to do bland again!

If I were you I'd probably get some lovely rich curtains as well.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 08/03/2017 09:44

Could you decoupage the drawer fronts only on computer desk?
That would make it recede a bit.

I love your bedroom!

Fontella · 08/03/2017 10:59

I do have some lovely curtains, actually. I took them down and washed them and then was scared to put them back up in case it was too much. A mustard bedroom is a big step for me ... and my nerves couldn't take much more! Grin

I found the white voiles in the airing cupboard (I must have bought them for somewhere once and never used them) so decided to play it 'safe' and put those up instead.

I'll give it another few days to get used to, then maybe play around a bit more. First job though is to track down a decent lamp shade for the centre light as the one I've got looks awful.

I love the colour. We've had it but the rooms' aspect meant it sucked all the light, so it had to go Sad

When funds allow I'd paint or replace the bedroom door and get a new face plate for the light switch.

Maybe you could spray paint the computer desk?

All quite cheap and cheerful solutions.

I'd also dress the window with show curtains in a pewter or dark bronze colour. I like a more muted, brooding palette with mustard as opposed to the ruby or terracotta contrast.

It already looks fab though, a really nice and personal space as well as a good place to work.

wickedfairy · 18/03/2017 19:04

Bloody hell - that really does look amazing! What a fab colour and the decoupage looks brilliant - you must be pleased!

BlueDaBaDee · 18/03/2017 19:18

Wow!! I'm definitely going for mustard when I finally manage to buy a house Grin
