Toy storage...is IKEA the best option

I'm determined to get my children's rooms sorted when we move, so far our toy storage has been a bit haphazard and always looks a mess. I want the children to start looking after their belongings better but my 5 year old has told me he needs drawers like at school in order to tidy up! I do agree otherwise everything just ends up in one toy box or slung in the bottom of a basket, then we face the inevitable tip out everything approach when they are looking for something.

Are the ikea kids trofast the best option, it's just so bleeuggh!

But my priority is making sure all his little bits and pieces have a home rather than aesthetics, so if the consensus is that they are the most practical I'm keen, at least they aren't too pricey!

if anyone has any good toy storage ideas, in particular for small things, like trash packs, mutant mania etc which my son loves, id be keen to hear them.

My house is generally chaotic with stuff everywhere and it's stressing me out. I want organised chaotic at least!

I have a mix of these storage boxes & each box has different toys in it - Duplo, dolls, tea set & play food, jigsaws etc. The kids take out one box at a time, play with it, tidy up & put it away & pick another. I keep them in a cupboard but they stack on top of each other & you get loads of sizes for all the different toys.

I have stuva & baskets in kallax but the kids were just pulling out lots of toys & it was always a mess.

I really like the trofast! They're not too deep so they don't stick out from the wall too much and invade on the room.

DD is only 18 months so we have 3 of the larger boxes in each unit at the moment (3 units in total) but I'm hoping they'll last us a good while and just switch to the shallower boxes for craft bits etc.

I am fairly strict about one box out at a time otherwise it can get muddled but even if it does (and you're not too bothered) you can just shove it wherever and it will look tidy at the end of the day.

I have Kallax instead - makes the rooms look slightly less like a daycare centre with the fabric boxes.

We have some trofast but the classier solution downstairs is a billy bookshelf with white plastic containers in it (also from IKEA). Think one type hides in the kitchen section and the other in the storage section. There are also fabric boxes in the kids section that fit the billy perfectly.

Really Useful Boxes fit on a billy bookcase and you can get doors so you can't see anything.

I'm looking too for a new house. There some really nice stuff on gltc but it seems expensive for what it is so I reckon I'll end up with kallax.

Kallax far better than Trofast. Trofast is messy and ugly.

You can get drawers in the Kallax range as well if you need something shallower for craft stuff etc.

We have Trofast, Kallax and some Really Useful Boxes. Kallax is great for board games. Get lids for the Trofast boxes so they don't look messy (ours don't look ugly or like day care ). Too many toys though, we need a clearout!

We use Muji tubs of varying sizes with picture labels on the outside showing what's inside, organised by category (Cars, Action figures etc). They're pretty durable and not babyish so our 6.5 year old likes them and we're able to use them for other stuff when the dc outgrow the categories. Eg the baby toy box is about to become an office box.

Loved the idea of trofast but I was really disappointed when I saw it in store. Wobbly and poor quality, especially for the price.

We've ended up going with two kallax units, a 4X2 with a 2X2 sitting on top which allows shelf space for any bits that are too big to go into the boxes (eg. garage toy). Some of the holes are for books, some are for toys and we bought some of the fabric kallax drawers which are great for sorting cars and figurines.

I've just got the kallax with the GLTC fabric boxes and it looks really nice! DD has it in her bedroom with books on open shelves and toys in the boxes.

Kallax with fabric boxes here, too. We didn't like the look of Trofast.

We do cull DS' toys on a fairly regular basis as well. He seems to haveva lot of painted-up loo rolls they have a box of their own.

We have a mix of Trofast and Kallax. If aesthetics don't bother you Trofast is your best option. We've found it robust and flexible. Trofast have different sized boxes which work well for all sorts of toys.
Kallax looks nicer but I find the boxes too big when trying to keep toys sorted and tidy.

I'd been meaning to go to IKEA for ages for the Trofast storage. I ended up getting the Phoenix storage range from Argos instead as delivery of furniture is so much easier for me.

I put it together last week, was an absolute doddle. I bought the matching storage boxes and I am amazed at how much it holds.

My house is a sea of Kallax. It's just such good value and so practical. The fabric boxes look tatty after a while but are only £2.50 so we just replace them.

We have just purchased Kallax and the boxes, putting them together today but hopefully they will be good!

My niece has the kallax in her bedroom. My sister has bought at least 4 units but what she really needs to do is get rid of toys that she has outgrown or no longer plays with. Unfortunately my niece, aged 6 seems to follow her Dad for attachment to things. He won't for example use new slippers because "there are years left in these ones and they are fine". Dirty, falling apart type of slippers.
