I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm wondering if there any are fellow Mumsnetters who like mid-century modern/modernist furniture?

I am not any kind of expert, but I find myself increasingly drawn to this style. My most coveted item at the moment is the Finn Juhl no 45. There is no way I'll ever be able to afford an original - but does anyone have the repros? Are they any good?

The great this about MCM furniture is that it looks equally good in either a very retro or a very modern setting.

It's minimalist and highly functional, clean lines and innovative design is second to none.

It also appeals to both men and women, as opposed to something like Shabby Chic which is far more feminine and puts a lot of blokes off!

Love MCM. We bought a 1950s house last year and are still renovating and adding an extension.

I've got a few pieces already from my parents but am on the look out for a sideboard. Just ordered a GPlan Vintage 1959 sofa in charcoal with walnut wood trim.

DH is worried the house will end up looking like a set from Mad Men!

I've just sold a gorgeous MC sideboard.

OH was gutted to see it go!

I'm on my way! Have just bought my first piece, a Mcintosh Dunvegan bookcase. It's quite small, to go into our extension to hide clutter. I'm after a chair next but harder to buy online as I do want it to be actually comfortable too!

JaneAustinAllegro · 23/10/2016 20:07

I have a huge Kagan sofa which looks fabulous but is super uncomfortable. I spent a holiday with him once while he designed and sketched, it was a wonderful experience. Very sad to lose him this year.

I have found some wonderful bargains in mainland Europe from Danish and Belgian furniture designers - a Pastoe dressoir that was a steal at 75 euros. I didn't know it was so fashionable to be into this style of furniture but I see why as it's elegant and refined with a touch of quirky and usually REALLY easy to get under with a hoover. In Holland there is nothing better to do than look into all of the herenhuisjes and see their beautiful mid century furniture with modern and antiek design elements intermingled.

boobashka · 23/10/2016 21:38

A PP wondered about the Scandi fabrics which go so well with midcentury furniture - check some out here www.husandhem.co.uk/169-all-fabrics

DH brought live back into this trolley table (no label but purchased from John Lewis) that my parent's used as a dining table in their flat Highbury in the 60s.

Excuse the crap picture and the crap in the background; we're getting ready to move house!

janeausten - oh wow, that sounds incredible! It must have been amazing to see the way he thought on paper. How wonderful.

I'm loving all these pictures of furniture! And learning so much too. And anerak I am super-envious of your dressoir! Those things are so elegant.

And thanks for the link to the fabrics boobashka - that is JUST what I'm after!

I love modernist/scandi/minimalist interiors. Absolutely adore Eames. Ercol, g plan and anything teak though just reminds me of my 80's childhood home and is a bit old for my liking.

shovetheholly · 24/10/2016 10:48

Can anyone recommend some modernist/modernist inspired crockery? Looking for dinner plates, side plates, bowls etc.

I'm keen on J&G Meakin Aztec but it's not to everyone's taste!

We've ordered this bed from Soak & Sleep.

I got a coffee pot and two matching cups like this from a charity shop for about £4.50. There's loads on Gumtree etc (It's Denby Arabesque).

Both of those are lovely!

I really like the work of Stig Lindberg, but the prices for both originals and repros are crazy!

Oh that's gorgeous OP. Love the Aztec too.

I'm going to assume this is a safe space and just admit the main reason I bought the bookcase was so I could start collecting some crockery. Blush Grin

shovetheholly · 24/10/2016 13:53

Oooh lonny, it's going to look lovely!

Is it one of the ones with a cupboard as well as shelves? (She says, being downright nosy!)

Does anyone have Dominic Bradbury's book on Mid Century Modern? It's £30 so I want to make sure it's worth it! Or do people have other recommendations they'd like to share?

I have this book:

www.amazon.co.uk/Style-your-Modern-Vintage-Home/dp/1446303446/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1477315068&sr=8-1&keywords=style+your+modern+vintage+home

It covers a lot of different era's and is written in an interesting and not too wordy way.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 24/10/2016 17:26

Yes OP it has one cupboard and two shelves. It's a console shape, really - quite thin, which is what I need in that part of the room. I can't copy the pic over but I promise I'll load one up when it arrives!

wiltingfast · 24/10/2016 17:32

Marking place, love this stuff but costs a BOMB here in Ireland Sad

DavetheCat2001 · 24/10/2016 17:47

I'm very excited! Managed to find one of these beauties today for the very reasonable price of £150! It's an Ercol Windsor sideboard and they can go for 000's.

Picking it up next Monday does a happy dance

Dave! You are on fire! Where are you that you're picking up all these bargains because DP wants a weekend away and, you know. Mid century.

DavetheCat2001 · 24/10/2016 23:19

I am in SE London Lonny, but actually found that via a tip off on a FB group called Ercol furniture fanatics, buy, sell & discuss being sold on Preloved.

I'd recommend joining that group and also Retro Furniture Fans UK (Ercol, Gplan, Ladderax etc) if you love all things MCM x

shovetheholly · 25/10/2016 07:52

dave - wow, you are GOOD at this!!! My PIL have an Ercol windsor sideboard like that and it is beautifully built.

I have applied to join the retro furniture fans group! Hooray!
