Somewhere nice around but not in Cardiff?

I want to meet my sister about halfway between Somerset and Swansea without going into Cardiff. If it is nice I was thinking St Fagins for a picnic, but I need a plan B.

Does anyone know of somewhere reasonably priced with nice food and a play area for kids (indoors and out) so the adults can chat and relax and the children are not bored stiff?

There is a Jump in/near Cardiff.

saggyhairyarse · 08/04/2009 21:23

Did a search and found this place:

www.cafejunior.com/

Or here:

Cafe Junior is fab (although no outdoor play).

How old are the children?

JackBauerKilledTheEasterBunny · 08/04/2009 21:44

Am really trying my hardest to think of somewhere!
halfway is more bristol/newport way so maybe have a look round there, depending on who wants to pay the toll

MsBrandybuck · 08/04/2009 21:45

Not sure if this is too far from Cardiff but how about the Rhondda Heritage Park?

MrsMcCluskey · 08/04/2009 21:48

This place is in NEwport, its OK as far as soft play goeshttp://www.ezeeeplay.com/Kids-soft-play-events-halloween-party.php here
I prefer this one in Cwmbran, might be more difficult to find, but nice fresh cooked food and good coffee www.cheekymonkeyscwmbran.co.uk/

Cafe Junior is in Cardiff, and tricky to find if you don't know the area. Ditto for Jump.

St Fagans is good, it has loads of outdoor space, but also has galleries, a shop, a restaurant and a cafe inside the main building (although I went this afternoon and there were huge queues for the carpark so we came home)

Aren't there some Roman things to look at around Newport (Carleon?), could be fun depending on the age of the children. Or what about meeting at a beach? Barry Island is very tacky, but has a fab beach and excellent fish&chips!

dirtygertiefromnumber30 · 08/04/2009 21:52

st fagins is lovely if the weather is nice.

If the weather is iffy you could meet in cardiff bay. There's techniquest, lots of nice places to eat, playground, millenium centre and usually other stuff going on.

MrsMcCluskey · 08/04/2009 21:52

We go her www.museumwales.ac.uk/en/bigpit/ a lot but only really suitable for older children

MrsMcCluskey · 08/04/2009 21:53

There is a good Roman museum and baths at Caerleon.
Techniquest in Cardiff Bay - lots of nice places to eat

angelene · 08/04/2009 22:03

Avon Valley Country Park is great, between Bath and Bristol type way.

Cardiff Bay is great generally if the weather is good - take a boat trip to Penarth and back! And Techniquest is fantastic.

Zoopadoopa in Cwmbran is a new soft play and the food (and service) is better than Eeezeeplay.

Caerphilly Castle, or Castell Coch around the same area - haven't been so not sure what the facilities are like.

There's also a Jump in Bristol, also the @explore place there is great as well.

I haven't been but apparently the Dan-yr-Ogof caves are great - further towards Swansea though.

I'm in SE Wales and my sister is in Bath so I'm well used to this corridor! Have fun

MrsMcCluskey · 08/04/2009 22:06

Hi Angelene I am in Cwmbran!
Havent been to Zoopadoopa
but was really impressed with Cheeky Monkeys.
Agree Easy Play not brilliant but near the M4!

angelene · 08/04/2009 22:21

Ooh, I'm in Pontypool

I will no doubt be trying out Cheeky Monkeys as it's a bit cheaper than Zoopadoopa, thanks!

MrsMcCluskey · 08/04/2009 22:23

If I see you there will give you my specail MN wave!!

MrsMcCluskey · 09/04/2009 13:02

Let us know how you got on!

MrsMcCluskey · 09/04/2009 16:32

Forgot about this " place here" is good.
There is soft play indoors if it rains.

mosschops30 · 09/04/2009 16:36

God I hate Cafe Junior, it smells of vomit and is full of breast feedfing yummy mummies who think theyre better than everyone else!

Jump is a big money making piss-take

There is a lovely play place near Ogmore By Sea called Maddies Madhouse, its an indoor play area but also does great fresh food for adults with homemade cakes and stuff (no crappy greasy chicken nuggets and chips). You could combine it with the beach at Ogmore if weather good enough

mosschops30 · 09/04/2009 16:37

Oh yeah agree that Techniquest is fab for all ages
