Where is the snow? Can we get a snow-watch up and running?

We live just south of Bristol and my children aged 10 and 8 have never seen snow. We are desparate to go sledging and build a snowman, without resorting to a ski-ing holiday or Lapland, and are willing to travel at short notice! However, snowfalls are unpredicatable, often sudden, and I cannot find a weather website that is accurate or detailed enough, or that tells me where snow is lying (as opposed to melting away). Could mumsnet be the answer?! Are there others out there who feel the same?! Could we alert others when snow falls and recommend good sledging sites?! Or is there a website already doing this and if so, where?!

I know its not the same but have you considered the snozone? We went to see santa on the slopes. The kids loved playing in the snow more than seeing santa.
My geography isnt that good but there is one in Milton Keynes. They do sledging ski ing etc too.

There is a risk of a 'wintry shower' in the channel islands today and tonight...but it usually ends up being rain!

Mine are the same never seen snow....they don;t believe that it used to snow here years ago badly.

EachPeachPearMum · 07/01/2009 11:44

We had snow yesterday here in Edinburgh, but it was pathetic...we all got so excited for a while... then realised it was really watery type of snow l....think the eskimos might call it crap snow.. maybe today we'll get better snow.

whitenoise · 07/01/2009 14:39

I'm in Dunstable, so I'm suprised you didn't get it earlier, must have only just missed you if you didn't.

It stopped a little while ago, but the sky looks full of it, don't think we've had our lot yet.

My Mum lives in Luton, she was saying how they've done a good job with gritting lots of places, sadly the same can't be said of here, the pavements still have lots of snow, and the gritters only grit the main roads.

snowing heavily in wiltshire and settling

lizziemun · 07/01/2009 16:26

It must have just passed us then goodie. Yes the council is very good at making sure the roads and paths are clear here.

Snow clouds are a yellowish pinkish colour. A long weekend in Aviemore ould do the job. Is snow up the hill (cairngorm). (keyboard not orking - using onscrreen one so bit abrupt!)

Niecie · 07/01/2009 16:46

We've just had a thin smattering in North Hampshire. Not a total white-out but it has settled.

tipsycat · 10/01/2009 19:22

Is there anywhere in the north west which still has snow? I'd love to take my 2 kids sledging tomorrow. Thanks.

spicemonster · 10/01/2009 19:24

We have snow in North London!

Not enough to sledge on but enough to write stupid messages on car windscreens

geordieminx · 10/01/2009 19:24

I'm that kids aged 8 and 10 have never seen snow!!!

I grew up in the north east so it was a regular thing for us! Ds is only 21 months, but living in glasgow has already been out on his sledge last year.

Mad

tipsycat · 20/01/2009 00:05

Anyone got any good snow to report?

serin · 31/01/2009 20:41

Well, it's on the way, according to the BBC but I will believe it when I see it.

We have our own little microclimate where I live (probab;y caused by proximity to Ellesmere Port!) and my kids do not even believe in Snow.

BritishBeef · 02/02/2009 07:24

I live in Portishead and we Never get any snow. Had none last night or this morning. Looking at the forcast it looks like everywhere except Portishead will get some today/tonight. Shame as I love snow and would love DS to experience some. Thinking about it I haven't seen a deent snowful for about 15 years (I lived in bristol from birth to 6 years ago).

BritishBeef · 02/02/2009 07:25

'snowfall' even!

PurplePillow · 02/02/2009 07:28

We have aboout 2 inches in SW Scotland and is still snowing ...YAHH!!

SoupDragon · 02/02/2009 07:29

Croydon/Surrey borders. Over 12 inches

PurplePillow · 02/02/2009 07:31

I'm very soupy, thought we were doing well with a couple of inches but 12 thats not fair

DuffyMoon · 02/02/2009 07:35

not a sodding thing....it never, ever snows here (near Blckpool) and its not fair
