Where is the snow? Can we get a snow-watch up and running?

We live just south of Bristol and my children aged 10 and 8 have never seen snow. We are desparate to go sledging and build a snowman, without resorting to a ski-ing holiday or Lapland, and are willing to travel at short notice! However, snowfalls are unpredicatable, often sudden, and I cannot find a weather website that is accurate or detailed enough, or that tells me where snow is lying (as opposed to melting away). Could mumsnet be the answer?! Are there others out there who feel the same?! Could we alert others when snow falls and recommend good sledging sites?! Or is there a website already doing this and if so, where?!

oneplusone · 02/02/2009 09:06

I'm in SW London/surrey, about 10 inches here! Never seen anything like it!

georgiemum · 02/02/2009 09:07

Hyde Park - yippee we have about 3 inches of snow! School closed

No gritting vans out so it is very slippery.

silverfrog · 02/02/2009 09:07

Surrey, and we've got about 12 inches probably (not going out there to measure it... but it comes over the top of dh's boots)

GYoIsReallyHavingABaby · 02/02/2009 09:10

More than foot on surrey/hampshire border.
I have been out so has the cat- she more or less disappeared!

FrannyandZooey · 02/02/2009 09:12

PadDad · 02/02/2009 09:13

We're off to Hyde Park.

Tiggiwinkle · 02/02/2009 09:15

South East London-About a foot deep here. Schools closed, entire London bus network not running.

moonmother · 02/02/2009 09:15

3 inches in Bedfordshire and still snowing

schools are closed so Dc's off out in the garden.

cece · 02/02/2009 09:18

North Surrey - over 12 inches I would say. Definitely over the top of DCs boots anyway but not been brave enought o go out in it yet. School closed too - yippee!

OrmIrian · 02/02/2009 09:20

Somerest. Not a a single flake Yes I know it's a pita for some but DCs would love some snow.

Lemontart · 02/02/2009 09:21

Allie68 - we are north of Bristol and have a tiny hint of snow in the air. So far just those teeny pretend flakes that make a few mm drifts on car window ledges and tops of walls. Enough to make the school run virtually impossible (over-excited mum kids) but not enough for a bouncy ball sized snowball let alone a snowman..

Weather forecast via BBC have 1 snowflake for today and 2 snowflake image for tomorrow - although suggesting tomorrow is warmer so might not stick.(0c today and 4c tomorrow for our region)

If everyone in the east could just go outside at 9.30am and all flap their arms to blow their weather across to the west we might just pull it off..
Alternatively anyone with too much snow could always post some to me - happy to pay all P&P..

hippipotamiHasLostTwoPounds · 02/02/2009 09:22

West Surrey - a good 10 inches adn still coming down. Schools closed
The children are outside having a snowball fight with the neighbouring children. And in a little while we will head off to a friends house who lives near a small hill and has a sledge

YIPPEE!!!

OrmIrian · 02/02/2009 10:12

Well we had some snow. About 4 tiny flakes. Now it's gone. The Big Freeze is over!

Polgara2 · 02/02/2009 10:23

Well we had about an inch (Cheshire) which as the council have not gritted ANYWHERE it is just as well. I have just slid out of a road junction onto fortunately not a main road taking dd2 to school. Twas a bit scary so am really not looking forward to tomorrow if it freezes on it. That said it is lovely and sunny at the moment so it may melt?

cutekids · 02/02/2009 12:59

denbighshire....had some this morning but think it's melted now...kids terribly disappointed!

pinkkoala · 06/02/2009 10:12

we have loads in northants, and still snowing.

mooseloose · 06/02/2009 10:21

I have loads near Rugby - children all at school too

FAQtothefuture · 06/02/2009 10:23

I'm in Centrel Northants, snowing heavily and settling on top of the remains of yesterdays snow - had about 2 or 3 inches settle since 7.30 this morning. Not very "heavy" (well I don't think so - but I'm a northerner by birth ) but steady and big fat snowflakes.

Overmydeadbody · 06/02/2009 10:25

Snow has been falling steadily in Cambridge since about 8am. Decided not to brave the hour-long walk to school with DS this morning

tjacksonpfc · 06/02/2009 11:17

im just north of stonehenge and we still have it and still snowing been here since sunday kids have had a week off school so if anyone wants it they are more than welcome to it

FAQtothefuture · 06/02/2009 11:20

seems to be easing off a little here in C Northants, still same "speed" of fall but thinner.......
