Dealing with weather disappointment

First holiday in 4 years, we've come to Rhodes in October as all my research suggested this was our best bet for weather. Thunderstorms all week. I'm gutted.

Trying to make the most of it and we are lucky to have our own villa with pool so the kids were able to swim late last night when it stopped raining. It just means one of us has to stand by the pool supervising as the furniture is all soaking wet.

Also irritatingly we booked an indoor cinema experience today thinking it would be a good rainy activity but we were turned away as their show wasnt operating as normal 'because of the rain'. Ended up in Starbucks instead...

Pleeeeease tell me all the reasons why it's still a great week.

Go and see some historical places!

OrangeFlower14 · 26/10/2026 17:40

Well, I just looked it up and I’m not seeing rain all week, but I appreciate you are in a better place to judge.

Go and see some historical places!

That was our plan today but we abandoned it as we would have been soaked to the skin. Took shelter in a restaurant for lunch and then went back to the villa.

There must be museums and galleries in Rhodes?
How about bus tours?

HambleDoll · 26/10/2026 17:47

Ah that’s so annoying. We are usually in Rhodes at this time of the year and it’s always boiling. This year has been rubbish in Greece rain wise generally. Have you been to Rhodes town and to Lindos? Brollies up and a nice mooch?

Never been to Rhodes, but somewhere closer to home eg Lakes if it pisses down we go to the inside tourist sights and it's still a nice outing

HambleDoll · 26/10/2026 17:48

Also the weather can change quickly. I hope you get at least a few daya of sun.

Traceyatnumber32isaloudgobshite · 26/10/2026 17:49

Greece is notoriously rainy from Mid September onwards. Altho I would have thought Rhodes might have fared better than other islands such as the Ionian.
We had a mixed week mid September although luckily for us it rained mostly early evening onwards.
The canaries probably fare a bit better weatherwise at this time of year if you dont want any real culture or history.

Fleabagpeabag · 26/10/2026 17:52

We had similar but tbf the greek island we were on was less 'sun sure'.

Please moan away. Holidays aren't cheap - you are allowed to be disappointed.

RedSpotTeaPot · 26/10/2026 17:54

It's still a great week because - you're all together, you can have some great food and be silly together.

A quick search turned up Skypark Entertainment Centre in Faliraki. Skating, bowling etc. Also a toy museum (can't see where that is).

Does it have to be not raining to get in the pool? You'll get wet anyway.
Could you and your partner get in the pool with the kids?

Fleabagpeabag · 26/10/2026 17:55

Agree with suggestion of heading to Rhodes town. It's a reasonable sized town and pretty cosmopolitan - am sure you'll find something to do there.

Coconutter24 · 26/10/2026 18:17

I would just think to myself…. At least I’m not at work!!

Maninasuitcase · 26/10/2026 18:24

“Sic transit Gloria Mundi” or in plain English; “That’s the way the cookie crumbles”.

Quitelikeit · 26/10/2026 18:28

Something similar happened to us when we went to Athens last year - this year I was too scared to book anything so we just stayed home!

Askandyforcompo · 26/10/2026 18:57

I really feel for you. I went to Corfu in early September last year and it rained every day. It was miserable and a waste of money.

If it makes you feel any better you've been unlucky rather than made a bad judgement. I've been to Rhodes, Crete and Kalymnos in October many, many times and had glorious weather. Just as Corfu this year the same week I went last year was gorgeous.

I'll always weather watch when I go in the autumn in future!

TootyPahooty · 26/10/2026 18:59

To make matters worse, I just realised that I think I left my handbag in Starbucks. So guess where I'm going again tomorrow 😂

How could your research not have shown that this was a high risk weather holiday?

Because everywhere I looked said that if I was limited to October half term, Rhodes would be our best bet. I would have loved to come in August but I had already saved up for 4 years and October is what we could afford.

Sorry to hear about that and all your saving up.

Lulu1919 · 26/10/2026 19:30

Im in Rhodes too - all inclusive but cos of rain only buffet open and it’s hideous - wish I could go home !

mamaduckbone · 26/10/2026 19:42

I’m so sorry op - I would be gutted too. I guess if the rain eases up then you can do some sightseeing but I absolutely think that your disappointment is justified.

We're finding it quite bizarre that some places are not able to function because of the rain, but I suppose they're not used to it here!

Sympathy!!! I have had some holidays when I wished I were elsewhere and with rubbish weather. I know a family that went to Dubai and it rained ...
Will there be a big thing for 28th October? This is Ochi Day (NO! to fascism) in Greece and an important cultural day with parades.
If one of you is poolside, you could bring an 'indoor' chair out to the pool just to perch on for that time and bring it back inside.
Sad news about your handbag, I hope you find it and, more importantly, its contents!!
The Greeks are totally accustomed to rain - that's how their winter rolls. Rainy season starts sometime at the end of Sept/beginning of Oct. It's been true since Homeric times ...
and many businesses close for the winter when the weather turns. This year, Greece has has some big storms in recent weeks with deep flooding so it's good news that anything is still open now.
Meantime, break out those cards and the lego ...

OffTheMap · 26/10/2026 20:30

Bad luck, OP, very disappointing.

But… they can swim in the rain.

Do go and explore Lindos, it’s wonderful.

I hope you get some let up

MidnightMeltdown · 26/10/2026 20:45

To be fair, you were playing Russian roulette with the weather by going in October. Especially this late in the month!

Now you’re there, you need to make the most of it. Google for indoor activities. Interactive museums etc. Hopefully it won’t rain everyday!
