Dealing with weather disappointment

First holiday in 4 years, we've come to Rhodes in October as all my research suggested this was our best bet for weather. Thunderstorms all week. I'm gutted.

Trying to make the most of it and we are lucky to have our own villa with pool so the kids were able to swim late last night when it stopped raining. It just means one of us has to stand by the pool supervising as the furniture is all soaking wet.

Also irritatingly we booked an indoor cinema experience today thinking it would be a good rainy activity but we were turned away as their show wasnt operating as normal 'because of the rain'. Ended up in Starbucks instead...

Pleeeeease tell me all the reasons why it's still a great week.

We’re in Turkey - has rained all 3 days so far 🤦🏻‍♀️I think the weather’s rubbish in most of Europe at the moment ☔️ I hope you are managing to enjoy your holiday.

mcmooberry · 27/10/2026 18:53

Totally sympathise, we had this in Crete a few years ago, been blazing hot for literally months then the day we arrived the weather collapsed and it rained for days (and this was late August), fortunately it got better towards the end of the holiday but spoiled our arrival. It's awful here, you are off work, and hopefully having some lovely food, so there's that x

Rockpunkdisco · 27/10/2026 19:17

Get some ponchos and go out and get wet! It's still warm, you can still explore and have fun.

DeeLasVegas · 27/10/2026 20:31

I’m sure you can buy umbrellas, even in Rhodes. Lots of sights to see.

maisybobbins · 27/10/2026 20:35

We are in Corfu and it’s freezing! But Corfu town still beautiful, shops are open, food fabulous, kumquat liquor still lovely. But we here with teens so appreciate that may be easier.

PleaseDontStepOnTheDaisies · 27/10/2026 23:49

Unlucky OP, but you have avoided the storms in UK at least!

Have a look around for some caves to visit - I love going to caves, enjoy the stalagmites & stalactites. Some are absolutely stunning.

ThatRoseViewer · 28/10/2026 00:00

Why are posters telling the OP about their supervisor and alternative choices and successes and offering advice to @TootyPahooty .
Reign it in FFS it's unhelpful.

sleepwouldbenice · 28/10/2026 00:21

Agree that feeling OP that the weather is inevitable or was boiling when you've been there is unhelpful
OP I sympathise! We had rain on on Kenyan honeymoon ( never happens apparently...) and also in canaries one october half term. Can happen anywhere!

I think the food point is a good one, any cooking classes or similar anywhere? But I also came on to say accuweather is suggesting better weather soon? Appreciate you've lost lots of time but there might still be some hope of couple of nice days
Fingers crossed for you

@TootyPahooty I really don't think you need to stay inside all day. It's a 'red code' from 26th to 29th but that doesn't mean you need to hide inside. Just use your judgment like you would in the UK. We were snorkelling in the beautiful sunshine yesterday and are going to Rhodes town today. I feel like you're choosing to make your holiday worse than it could be just because it's not wall to wall sunshine.

I've lived in this area (Aegean/eastern Med) for over 20 yrs and we AWAYS have storms around this time hence why most hotels are closed as their high season finishes early October!

How unfortunate the travel agents didn't think to point this out to you.....

The Canaries are more guaranteed to be storm free at this time of year as they're further South.

lemoncurdcupcake · 28/10/2026 09:15

Appreciate this might not be your mindset but when I was in Cambodia it rained the whole time and we just cracked on. Bought ponchos as we hadn't packed waterproofs and did everything we would have done otherwise. It wasn't great in the moment to be quite so wet but looking back we all actually agreed it was the best part of the trip and the photos of us all dancing in poncho's in the rain etc are hilarious. And I'm super glad we still saw the temples and did all the things we'd hoped to. I think someone called it second degree fun, fun in retrospect when you're warm and dry again 🤣

We're finding it quite bizarre that some places are not able to function because of the rain, but I suppose they're not used to it here!

Ha, maybe. Also, is the rain torrential? Some places get it much worse than the UK - in a stormy downpour in Dubrovnik a couple of years ago there were floods and some cafes etc. had to close. Only lasted a day though.

We had a very wet holiday in the UK years ago. 10 day holiday, first day was glorious and then it rained for 9 days straight. Also, it was the year of Foot and Mouth so some areas were closed to the public completely. We had two toddlers and near the end of our holiday we had exhausted indoor things for toddlers to do in the area and went home early. We did end up doing some things just because they were indoors.that might not otherwise have been on our list, like a county fair with flower arrangements and giant leeks.

NiaAndFar · 28/10/2026 10:26

Why can you not swim in the rain?😂

Tour operators are being disingenuous selling "beach" holidays right through to the end of October. All because it's half term and they know families want to go on holiday abroad. Years ago the season ended in September and flights stopped.
It's all very well saying "buyer beware" but it's unfair to people who are not seasoned travellers and think they will be getting a hot summer holiday.

I see threads on here over and over again from people saying will it be warm enough in The Algarve in October or Corfu at Easter. There's always replies from people encouraging them to go. Just because it's sometimes nice doesn't mean it's worth the risk for a long awaited precious holiday.

We’re in Greece currently. No day so far has been a complete wash-out despite periods of heavy rain and even the rain has its charm - running through a torrential downpour from a taverna back to our accommodation was something to remember, and the moody purple and black skies over the sea have been like a scene from a painting. I’m embracing some time chilling out and reading and when the sun is out it’s still warm - I was on the sun lounger for a couple of hours this morning.

Personally I like a holiday to a “summer” destination at this time of year - you can’t rely on the weather to be perfect but I find it preferable to the baking heat of August when it’s too hot to do anything for half the day, it’s gloriously quiet and much more affordable.

Hope it picks up for you OP!

TheImpOfThePerverse2026 · 29/10/2026 16:56

People who say 'get a poncho or an umbrella' - have you ever experienced a Mediterranean storm? It's not like a heavy shower and you can slope off to the market and wait for the sun to come out.

@OnePeppyFatball it's been an interesting day in Cyprus hasn't it 😉

LongsocksLou · 29/10/2026 17:17

It’s been beautiful today in the Peloponnese, hope it’s been good in Rhodes!

ginforall · 30/10/2026 08:12

I’m sorry you’ve been unlucky with the weather. I can completely see why you chose Rhodes. We too have been to Rhodes, Turkey and Kos at this time of year. The amount of rain you’re describing is unlikely and unlucky. I’m hoping it’s cleared up a bit for you now. When we went to Kos last week I had a look on ‘get your guide’ for indoor things, just in case. There were cooking classes, museums and a couple of craft type things which I had as ideas. Might be worth a look for Rhodes if you are still looking for something.
