Rude waiter in Majorca

We were having an early evening drink in a bar in Palma Nova when a woman on a nearby table asked the waiter why it was quiet he replied "it's October, people who come here in October can't afford to buy drinks"
What a cheeky twat, we were thinking of eating there but after that thought forget it and went elsewhere

OK

Autumnalhibernationisthedream · 16/10/2026 06:13

Whether he was joking or not I’m not sure it would have caused me to leave to be honest!

Newsprint · 16/10/2026 06:21

Well, I’m sure he’s a sadder and wiser waiter now. Oh, wait.

Soontobe60 · 16/10/2026 06:24

Eh? It was a throw away comment, probably more true than not and you decided to up and leave? Ridiculous.

DoffTinHat · 16/10/2026 06:27

Ooh where was that? I'm in Palmanova at the moment. Been here many, many times. But never in October before.

From my observations & chats, it's mainly older Brits who avoid school holidays - not necessarily because it's cheaper, more because kids can be bloody annoying (I have kids - now adults - and they were indeed annoying at certain times).

Orca123 · 16/10/2026 06:29

We didn't just up and leave immediately, just found it a bit rude and decided to eat elsewhere

I wouldn’t have taken that as a rude or cheeky comment. It’s just his experience.

Mouthyton · 16/10/2026 06:50

Genuinely - how do you get through a normal, average day with skin that thin?

Oh it's tough I must admit, these hurty words I have to endure

So why do you think it was quiet?

And why did you take it personally?

IglesiasPiggl · 16/10/2026 07:02

People who travel in shoulder season (June, Sept and Oct) tend to spend less. He's kind of right. Maybe it's not because they can't afford to but from his perspective the result is same - less money is spent on his premises in October.

cariadlet · 16/10/2026 07:04

I thought, from the title of the thread, that the waiter had insulted you or someone at your table.

It was just a casual reply to a casual comment. It wouldn't have crossed my mind that he was being rude. I certainly wouldn't decide to eat elsewhere based on a remark like that.

I agree with a pp that people going abroad in October are likely to be avoiding school holidays in order to avoid other people's noisy children. Term time holidays are also a lot cheaper. Older people wanting a quiet holiday will probably drink less than young people in their teens and 20s.

I can see why a waiter might interpret this as people being unable to afford to spend as much money rather than people choosing to spend less.

cartagenagina · 16/10/2026 07:10

Throwaway comment surely?

I agree. A weird over reaction from the OP.

Sherararara · 16/10/2026 07:13

What a thrilling holiday OP must be having to think “I must post about this non event on MN asap”

PollyBell · 16/10/2026 07:13

How is it rude?

Bitsostuff · 16/10/2026 07:18

What would have been an acceptable reply then @Orca123 ?

Exactly!

Lhori · 16/10/2026 07:30

I don't think it was rude. It obviously touched a raw nerve with you though! Do you feel that lowly waiters shouldn't make observations about other people's finances?

Not just endure but have to leave a restaurant and then post about it 😬

Bubblesoffun · 16/10/2026 07:40

PollyBell · 16/10/2026 07:13

How is it rude?

It’s the implication that anyone on holiday now is poor.

very strange to up and leave over this op, can’t be fun to go through life with so much negativity

arethereanyleftatall · 16/10/2026 07:54

But also op, the waiter can’t give a shit if you eat elsewhere. In fact it makes his life one table easier. People (the ones who don’t think about stuff) do this fairly often as if the person on the front of service are negatively impacted by a flounce. They - patently - wouldn’t care.
