Or will it be freezing and dark?

It won't be any darker than the UK but may be slightly colder. But you don't go to Berlin in December to sunbathe so I suppose it depends what you want to do there as to wether I would go or not.

DuckyLuck · 09/10/2026 19:54

I’d go to Berlin any time. It’s a great city

Aligirlbear · 09/10/2026 20:17

Yes - done it several times. It won’t be any darker but it will probably be colder. Take layers and wrap up warm. It’s a great city any time of the year.

katand2kits · 09/10/2026 20:34

It might be cold but there will be Christmas markets so you can warm up with some Gluhwein.

strongswan · 09/10/2026 20:37

I’d go, Berlin is wonderful anytime of the year. It will be cold but nothing good clothes can’t handle!

BaronessBomburst · 09/10/2026 20:40

It'll be fecking freezing, but it's a great place to visit.

NotGalinda · 09/10/2026 20:41

I did, it was lovely. In the evenings we went to Christmas markets, in the days we did lots of the sights. Really enjoyed, it was cold but not bitterly so. Hat, gloves and a nice coat and you were fine

Lifesyoungdream · 09/10/2026 20:43

DH and I went in Dec.It was one of the best weekend breaks I’ve ever had. It was cold but we had suitable clothing. There was plenty to do and the Christmas Markets were amazing.

1percentbatterylife · 09/10/2026 20:46

Has anyone been with children? Was looking between Xmas and new year, will zoos / aqua parks still be open?

tinytemper66 · 09/10/2026 20:47

Absolutely. Wrap up warm!

Mumsntfan1 · 09/10/2026 20:50

Yes. I live in Germany so it's not too far for me. Anyway there is loads to do in Berlin and there are several Christmas markets. It could be colder than you're used to in the UK but if you bring warm clothes you'll be fine. What are you planning to do?

nearlylovemyusername · 09/10/2026 20:53

Oh yes! Berlin is so beautiful in Dec, Christmas markets are so good there they will ruin UK equivalent for you forever. It's likely to be cold so take some layers

Amiable · 09/10/2026 22:41

Fab Christmas Markets, Gluhwein, Amazing lights and decorations… Berlin in December is wonderful! Yes, it will be cold, but wrap up warm and enjoy!

Needlebeetle · 10/10/2026 08:03

Thanks everyone! We’re just planning a city break so lots of touristy things.

Perfect time to go! Chilly. Possibly snow. Dark and foreboding around the old architecture. Beer, hot wine, sausage and chips in a pub. Perfect

Cantgetausername87 · 10/10/2026 08:08

I love Berlin in December- it's blooming cold but there's lots of stuff to do and Xmas markets and ice skating. Tonnes of mulled wine in an evening. Now I want to go to Berlin again x

rookiemere · 10/10/2026 08:09

We went 2-5Jan. It was freezing but dry and as long as we wrapped up warmly was absolutely fine, so much to see. Avoid the hop on hop off bus - it stops for 20 minutes at certain stops because of German employment laws so is best avoided. Use public transport or ubers to get around.

It’s a fantastic city any time of the year. In December, it has a darker, broodier atmosphere that fits well with its history.

The4teddybears · 10/10/2026 11:11

We went for 5 days last December. It was a fantastic break and the Christmas markets are
absolutely magical. We walked our legs off and used the underground to get around.
It was cold so scarf, gloves and a good coat needed. But it’s getting the balance right as you don’t want to be sweating with all the walking. So I just wore a vest and blouse and thick leggings under a thick coat and wasnt cold .

I’ll come back and post later the good places to visit as I haven’t got time now. 👋👋

PinkOrangeRed · 13/10/2026 15:05

We were there in December a couple of years ago and it was great. As well as warm clothing, I'd recommend thermal insoles if you haven't got any warm boots/shoes as you really feel the cold from the ground.
I'd recommend visiting the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate and the Jewish Memorial, and the Fersehturm. Our favourite Christmas market was the Gendarmentmarkt.
If you have time, get a train to Dresden to go to the Altmarkt Christmas market and the Frauenkirche.

zoeslim · 13/10/2026 15:09

wonderful city the WW2 history tours and cold war tours are amazing
GO
The Hotel by the Brandenburg gate does wonderful hot chocolate and gin and pricey but different class

HappyViewer · 13/10/2026 15:11

I went early February and had a really good trip.

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/10/2026 15:13

It was absolutely freezing when we went in February. I would definitely go in December though when the Christmas markets will be on. There is plenty to see in Berlin at any time just wrap up warm.

JudgeJ · 13/10/2026 15:14

It was freezing but dry
What we still refer to as German cold, it does get much colder, we lived there for a few years, but because it's a dry cold it's easier to wrap up and keep warm. Go later in the month, 2nd or 3rd week, and enjoy the markets, they will be wonderful. Another place for great markets is Hamburg, a smaller city so easy to get round them all.

beeny · 13/10/2026 15:16

Amazing city !
