Oh yes! Berlin is so beautiful in Dec, Christmas markets are so good there they will ruin UK equivalent for you forever. It's likely to be cold so take some layers

The exact reason I never go to the UK markets!

Take a big coat and hat. I went in March and it was great but freezing.

that said, Berlin is ace

Berlin is lovely in December!

localnotail · 14/10/2026 21:17

Berlin is amazing. Go anytime! Nightclubs are pretty warm whatever the weather ))

id jump at the chance.

I also went in February and it was freezing cold. There is lots to see - museums, galleries, and of course Christmas markets in December - but I’m in no hurry to go back in the winter. 🥶

Greetings from Berlin! December is fine for a visit, precisely because it’s so cold and dark. It’s the perfect backdrop for a visit to a Weihnachtsmarkt, standing around with a Glühwein and Bratwurst. It wouldn’t be the same on a warm day! November and February are shockingly bad by comparison because there are no lights.
Gendarmenmarkt is a good place to start (small entry fee). We also like the one outside Charlottenburg palace. The one close to the Fernsehturm has an ice rink (the rink at Potsdamer Platz is terrible). At all markets: Sunday afternoons have now become so busy post-Covid that you just can‘t move. I think the markets being cancelled during Covid deeply traumatised the Germans more than anything else, and we‘re all making the most of them since then.
Most importantly: be a good tourist and don’t book an AirBnB - there’s a huge housing crisis for young Berliners, my own DC are affected by this, most AirBnBs are illegal and unregistered, using social housing that should be reserved for people who need it. It’s a shitty way to visit a place.

Yes. I once went for 5 days across New Years and it was fabulous. I’ve done the same for Munich & Reykjavik too, would recommend both.

BitOutOfPractice · 14/10/2026 21:46

Yes I would. Yes I have.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 14/10/2026 21:46

I would for the gluhwein and sight seeing but I’m fine with freezing and dark.

I lived in Berlin as a child and I have some incredibly wonderful memories of Christmas there.

ObsidianTree · 14/10/2026 21:52

Yes. Went last year end of November. it was cold but were were prepared with thermals /layers. Was great for Christmas markets

It was freezing but dry
What we still refer to as German cold, it does get much colder, we lived there for a few years, but because it's a dry cold it's easier to wrap up and keep warm. Go later in the month, 2nd or 3rd week, and enjoy the markets, they will be wonderful. Another place for great markets is Hamburg, a smaller city so easy to get round them all.

Yes, German cold can be dry and that's better than damp cold. It will likely be very cold but if you've got a hat and layers or thermals it's ok. I recommend thin silk socks under ordinary socks in boots. Your feet will be toasty warm. Berlin is wonderful.

FairViewRosie25 · 14/10/2026 22:00

Berlin is great you just need very warm clothes and nice thick boots that will take 2x socks (my feet get cold)

CoastalCalm · 14/10/2026 22:05

I wouldn’t - we did and it was so cold couldn’t really enjoy the Christmas Markets even DH who is never cold struggled

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 14/10/2026 22:12

We did and loved it. Wrapped up, we visited at least one Christmas market every day as well as museums. I'd go back at the drop of a hat.

We stayed at Miniloft Apartment Hotel Mitte. Great location, walking distance from the central station. Supermarkets nearby, and close to public transport. We stayed in a Classic apartment in the old building.

debsiedora · 17/10/2026 16:51

I went in December. The Christmas market was on plus it snowed. It was magical
