What are you doing in October half term?! (on somewhat of a budget)

Hi there - I've got a 5 year old (year 1) and a 2.5 year old.

Quite tempted to go away, maybe book a caravan park which has some indoor activities but I couldn't afford to spend any more than about £600, so that rules out Bluestone and Centerparcs! We would be looking for something in the South as I don't want to travel hours and hours.

Option 2 is staying local, doing one big thing like Chessington/Legoland and then just hanging out at home - with the added benefit of getting to trick-or-treat with pals.

Would like to know what other parents do - last year we just chilled at home which was also nice. PS we have just one week!

We’re going to Orlando! Booked last minute, flights and hotel for 7 nights staying on international drive was £2000 for 4 of us. We already have an annual pass for universal so just need a bit of spending. $1500 should do us for a week.

We’re going to Truro for a week :)

Typical mumsnet, you’ve asked for budget ideas and so far you get one person off to Tenerife and another to Orlando 🙄

Ineedanewsofa · 15/09/2026 15:00

Go to a Haven park! They are cheap and cheerful, have the pool, the activities and the kiddy disco/evening entertainment. Book a Silver or above caravan.
Lots of them are near a beach so any dry weather you can bundle up and build sandcastles

Yep! It’s not a direct flight but we’ve done indirect before and it’s been fine. You can get some cracking deals last minute.

I think a lot of people will be surprised you can do Orlando on a budget, someone already commented asking if that was really the cost and it was!

I don't include food in that £600 as we always self-cater, and I have to buy and cook food wherever I am lol :D :D

Theme parks in general. We’ve been all over the place. With universal, if you’re doing 2 trips in a year then it’s far cheaper to do an annual pass.

This is along the lines I was thinking - any suggestions?! There are SO many. I really want something with indoor stuff too in case it's blowing a hooley.

Love this idea - maybe we'll save up for next year.

Did you read the first post about budget? And I don't believe that price having been to Orlando several times

Not likely. Are they swimming across the Atlantic?

Tallestone · 15/09/2026 15:35

We've always had a good holiday in haven lots to do inside if it's raining. Most of the time in October it's not that cold yet for the beach.

ButlinsHelp · 15/09/2026 15:36

We're doing Butlins - booked a 2 bed Comfort plus apartment in minehead for just over £500. Have a 5yo and 18mo.
We went to bognor last year and there's loads to do and most of it (rides, pool, soft play, shows) are all included. My 5yo loves it.

Is Searles in Hunstanton close enough to you? We went there a few times when DS was younger.

We're going walking in the Peak District this year (but DS is 12).

We’ve been to Greenacres (Wales) and Golden Sands (Mablethorpe), probably both a bit far for you but would fit the bill

At that age option 2 / your 5 year old may be tired from the school by then
