What are you doing in October half term?! (on somewhat of a budget)

Hi there - I've got a 5 year old (year 1) and a 2.5 year old.

Quite tempted to go away, maybe book a caravan park which has some indoor activities but I couldn't afford to spend any more than about £600, so that rules out Bluestone and Centerparcs! We would be looking for something in the South as I don't want to travel hours and hours.

Option 2 is staying local, doing one big thing like Chessington/Legoland and then just hanging out at home - with the added benefit of getting to trick-or-treat with pals.

Would like to know what other parents do - last year we just chilled at home which was also nice. PS we have just one week!

I've been to Haven a few times, albeit not that recently and it's great, cheap and cheerful, loads for kids.

I'm all good for holidays thank you. I was just wondering why you mentioned Orlando when the OP mentioned a budget. It comes across as bragging a bit and if you didn't mean it that way then I apologise.
I think it was quite clear from the original post that the OP was not looking for recommendations for Florida.

I apologise, I think I mixed you up with the person travelling to Orlando. Ignore my other post Wentforyo.

We usually rest at home at half term with the little ones! The weather in UK is unpredictable so we’d just wait to see if we had a clear fine day and then do a variation of:

day trip (maybe a farm or a beach)
halloween arts and crafts
NT property or other Halloween trail ,
Muddy woodland walk to collect autumn leaves and acorns for the aforementioned arts and crafts, or spot mushrooms and jump in puddles
A play date or two
Softplay, Bike ride or swimming
visit grandparents

I have already apologised. However, it was clear from the OP that she/he wasn't looking for recommendations for Florida and so it came across as bragging a bit. I admit i'm doubtful of the price, particularly with fuel costs, but if i'm wrong, then i'm wrong and that's fair enough.
It seems to be a thing on Mumsnet that people ask for advice on things to do on a budget and they get absolutely silly answers.
I know everyone's budget is different.
I just think that some people (not all by a long way) use Mumsnet to massage their ego sometimes.
I've said my bit, for what it's worth and I don't want to offend anyone.

And I have clarified in my post that everyones budget is different. I stand by the fact that the OP was not looking for a budget holiday to Florida, as has transpired.

I don't believe the price and i'm not apologising for having my own thought's and opinions.
If i'm wrong then I'm wrong. Nobody has died and we can all get on with our lives.
Please don't tell me what I need to do, it's a bit patronising.

The op asked what others are doing in half term. Yes they mentioned their budget for what they’re doing but asked also what others were doing. The question was open ended. That’s what I’m doing. Op has not indicated my post was unwanted.

Booked through love holidays. If you’d like to go on their website you will see options in that price bracket. Indirect flight, basic international drive hotel. We always keep our ESTA’s in place. We go and ride rollercoasters and enjoy the parks. If you’d can hold your nerve you can find amazing deals.

schoolmama5 · 15/09/2026 16:53

We’ll be in Spain 🤗 There’s no way we would have been able to afford to do much this half term otherwise but thankfully we booked it ages ago!! ☀️

@Wentforyojust checked love holidays and there’s even better deals now! If I’d held out another few days I could have paid £200 less! Ah, you live and learn 🤣

That's fair enough. And yes, enjoy your holiday. Orlando is fab. I'm sorry I didn't believe the cost of the holiday. It just seemed incedibly cheap.

I look at Hoseasons and filter it according to having a pool and go from there. You can choose lodges, chalets or caravans so the price varies.
