What do you do on a plane other than read, listen to music and watch films?

I’ve just discovered that crochet hooks are prohibited in hand luggage by my airline (confirmed) and I might go mad without something to do. Help!

I listen to audio books and try not to be sick.

shellyleppard · 08/09/2026 15:33

Could you take a puzzle book/app on the phone? Or tablet?
Failing that I would suggest lego?

Forgottenmyphone · 08/09/2026 15:34

Diamond painting, bullet journal, meal planning, composing emails

seahorsessky · 08/09/2026 15:36

talk, sleep, read, watch videos, play games, work

bababamama · 08/09/2026 15:36

All crochet hooks? Usually you can use bamboo ones

DemonsandMosquitoes · 08/09/2026 15:40

Take two sturgeron. Knocks me out for a good hour at least, and no sickness!

Hi, how fast do these work? DS is terrified of flying (not crashing, he hates the movement of the plane as it turns).

He'd like to go on his college trip to the US and we are trying to find something that will help him!

TheChosenTwo · 08/09/2026 16:09

How long is the flight? My last one was a 10 hour journey, I did just read, watch tv and played some of the games on the entertainment system. You could pack a crossword/puzzle book or colour in but tbh it’s just a mind numbingly long time to sit and do anything for isn’t it?!
I had downloaded 2 series of something I wanted to watch and had saved so it kept me engaged (had actually watched the first episode and knew I wanted to finish it) - I’m terrified of flying so also had a couple of drinks pre boarding to relax me and another few on the plane, I can’t sleep when in the air but it did chill me out a bit! Had some diazepam for the return night time leg, again didn’t sleep but certainly helped keep me calm. Wish I could have gone to sleep though.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 08/09/2026 16:10

What’s wrong with the film and tv choices? Usually ok for me. Take a decent book and puzzles.

I'm quite happy just doing those things, to be honest. If I needed anything else to do I'd probably play a game on my phone/do some cryptic crosswords while listening to an audiobook/podcasts. Or I'd do some writing. But I could happily do a long-haul flight with nothing but a Kindle.

Hayley1256 · 08/09/2026 16:20

I download movies to watch or a series on my tablet if I'm not reading. Some things I do with my DD10 (or sometimes by myself) on a plane are:

Colour
Puzzle books (Murdle is really good)
Loom bracelets
Diamond art (I like to coaster sets off Amazon)
Play games on my tablet like solitaire

Stugeron are anti sickness tablets and not designed to knock you out or calm you down.
Personally, I just read on a plane, no matter how long the flight. I can’t read on a train so I download a couple of Tom-coms or episodes of whatever I am watching on tv.

Sleep 😴😴😴😴

Justploddingonandon · 08/09/2026 16:28

I rarely usually get time to watch a whole film, so I'm usually happy alternating between doing that and reading. Those doing loom bands, diamond art etc, how do they not end up all over the floor when turbulence happens?

Livingthebestlife · 08/09/2026 16:31

Drink and eat 😁

Takoneko · 08/09/2026 16:35

I’ve got a 14 hour flight next week and will try to sleep for a chunk of it. I might watch a movie or two on the IFE but I will also download a few podcasts and an ebook. I’ve also got a book of crosswords ready.

The airline I fly with gives an hour of free WiFi and I will have my phone and iPad with me so will probably spend a couple of hours scrolling mumsnet or instagram.

princesspadam · 08/09/2026 17:16

@Takonekosee if someone can give you a Zopiclone! I sleep for 8-10hrs on most long haul flights taking these

I sleep pretty easily most of the time. I’m not worried about being able to get to sleep when it’s time.

I was just thinking this about diamond painting, crochet etc. Are all these people flying first class or something, because as someone who can only afford economy, the mere thought of doing any kind of crafting in cramped conditions on a tiny little fold down tray-table while elbow to elbow with someone else is making me feel stressed!

Haha this is SO true 😂
even just trying to eat the food on the table is an extreme exercise of elbows in and I’m quite a small person!
No idea how people are managing to carry out arts and crafts with the seat in front jiggling about and someone in your row needing in and out.

Apparently so! I might order one and risk it.

Crochet is fine because no elbows are involved!

Knitting isn’t fun and I agree about the crafts with small bits. They would end up on the floor or in my seat.

DistantEarlyWarning · 08/09/2026 17:36

Nothing, but I don’t want to stare at screens for the whole time I’m not asleep or reading.

I like to be able to do something with my hands, hence the crochet.

I do cross stitch, and I use a dental floss to cut the floss instead of scissors. It works and it keeps me busy!
