Would you expect these items in a holiday rental?

Lemon squeezer?
Cheese grater?

I highlighted to a holiday host that these missing items would have been useful and she felt they weren't standard items.

What random items have you also expected but not had? Oven gloves are sometimes not provided. I've stayed in a place without a sieve.

A moka / mokka pot. We had one in a rental in Germany. Husband excited as not used one before. The coffee reaches a long way if you forget to close the lid. Bit like I imagine Mount Vesuvius to be.

But what's the issue with an expensive holiday if you can afford it? Eating out pumps money into the local economy. Fine not to if you want to keep costs down but not everyone does or needs to.

I've never done anything that needs the inclusion of a lemon! We do have one, the teenager wanted it.

I think an olive pitter is an essential, how else can I make the martinis?

No, I wouldn't expect those items. We've been self-catering on holiday for over 20 years. If I was planning to eat a lot of grated cheese on holiday I'd take my own, a flat cheese grater doesn't take up much room to pack. If I wanted to juice fruit I'd do it by hand.

I've never looked for a sieve but wouldn't expect one. I wouldn't expect oven gloves - they go manky so quickly the owners would be forever having to replace them.

I do quick and simple meals on holiday requiring little or no prep. I don't want to be spending more time cooking than I have to. We usually eat out at least a couple of times.

Just back from a weekend away at a small but well appointed cabin. Don’t think there was a grater and definitely no lemon squeezer. I didn’t feel the lack of those but was surprised by no microwave or cafetiere/coffee pod machine. Quite surprised by the lack of coffee making facilities, thankfully we always bring our own cafetiere.

Doesn't "quick and simple" include pasta? If so, don't you use a sieve or colander to drain it? If I try to drain more than about 3 portions using a pan lid the pan is heavy and unwieldy, and I get hot steam up my arm. Just give me a colander please! Likewise, why should I have to faff around rinsing and draining the tinned chickpeas using the tin lid. A sieve/colander is a basic provision!

Yes, it does include pasta, but there are only two of us so draining in the pan isn't unwieldy.

One appt we stayed in recently had a washing machine (brilliant! It was so hot!) but nowhere to hang wet washing. It was draped around everywhere.

I do find it odd that holidays home equipment gets pared right down. I have less than at home but I cannot think of anything I don’t have in my holiday house which is needed for cooking and laundry - but less than at home. I don’t provide Victoria sandwich baking tins or a loaf tin for example. Yes, there’s a clothes airer for either a bathroom or outside but the washing machine is also a dryer.

I’ve stayed in places with no covered oven dish which I find annoying. In the winter I like a hearty casserole. I’m a big fan of one pot cooking so I think a skillet pan with a lid or casserole with a lid should be there. I think tiny kitchens are difficult to equip though because you need food storage too.
