Would you expect these items in a holiday rental?

Lemon squeezer?
Cheese grater?

I highlighted to a holiday host that these missing items would have been useful and she felt they weren't standard items.

What random items have you also expected but not had? Oven gloves are sometimes not provided. I've stayed in a place without a sieve.

Use a fork to juice lemons into a bowl

DoAWheelie · 31/07/2026 17:01

Cheese grater is a maybe, but I wouldn't think to check as we usually buy ready grated packets for holidays. It's a portion we are more likely to finish before returning home - who wants to pack a lump of rewrapped cheese in their suitcase.

Lemon squeezer is a big no.

jay55 · 31/07/2026 17:28

I can’t imagine spending my holiday grating cheese. And I only ever use a fork to squeeze lemons

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/07/2026 17:31

Cheese grater yes

no to lemon

oviraptor21 · 31/07/2026 17:32

I would expect a cheese grater as so many dishes need grated cheese and there's no way to do it without a grater. Lemons you can squeeze by hand.

ElsieJay · 31/07/2026 17:36

Cheese grater and oven gloves for sure.
Also corkscrew and colander.
Lemon squeezer not essential.

Artificialgrass · 31/07/2026 17:37

Cheese grater - maybe,
lemon squeezer - not

hugasaurus · 31/07/2026 17:38

Yes to cheese grater, definitely not to a lemon squeezer!

TheChosenTwo · 31/07/2026 17:40

No I wouldn’t!
But to be honest we don’t actually cook when we self cater, we go out to eat - it’s not holiday vibes to me to be sitting in eating pasta with grated cheese 😂
lemons are easy enough to squeeze by hand - obviously less easy to grate cheese without a grater though! But I wouldn’t think to mention that these items would have been handy. You never know though, they may consider it some more and buy stuff that could come in handy for future renters.

mtobrokeme · 31/07/2026 17:42

A cheese grater? Yes.

A lemon squeezer?! Nope!

Never squeezed a lemon in my life, I’ll just get a jif lemon for that!

Morepositivemum · 31/07/2026 17:42

I’ve never even seen a lemon squeezer!!! Cheese grater is a good question- I suppose not really but I’d need it!!

TheOcelot · 31/07/2026 18:05

No, never in a million years would I miss those in a rental. However I don't cook on holiday, I only use rentals for the extra space, never use the kitchen.

MossMystery · 31/07/2026 16:40

Cheese greater yes
Lemon Juicer no

This.

I'm currently in an Airbnb without oven mitts or a clothes horse, which is annoying me a lot. Nowhere to hang wet swimsuits.

Purpleturtle45 · 31/07/2026 18:32

Same as others, I would expect a cheese grater but not a lemon squeezer.

Growlybear83 · 31/07/2026 18:39

I wouldn’t expect any of these items to be available and would be pleasantly surprised if they were

Fifthtimelucky · 31/07/2026 18:44

Cheese grater, yes. Lemon squeezer, not necessarily.

Having said that I ended up with 3 cheese graters because I twice went on holiday to cottages that didn’t have one and had to buy one!

Ponderingwindow · 31/07/2026 18:52

No. holiday rental kitchens are typically bare bones, inferior equipment.

I don’t expect anything beyond a couple of pots and pans and some very basic cutlery and plates. If I actually plan to do any cooking, I have a kit I bring with real knives and other essentials.even if we are just planning on getting restaurant meals delivered, I bring things like steak knives.

backformoreofthesame · 31/07/2026 18:54

no I wouldn’t expect those things

CatInTheRhombus · 31/07/2026 19:27

Oven glove is a necessity, I’d be annoyed not to have one. Grater would be on the “I’d gamble that they’d probably have it, but I wouldn’t be shocked/annoyed if they didn’t”. I definitely wouldn’t expect a lemon squeezer.

Fizbosshoes · 31/07/2026 19:34

Cheese grater - yes
Lemon squeezer- no
Oven gloves - yes

I also think a potato/vegetable peeler should be standard. We have a selection of peelers and sharp knives that have been purchased on holiday.

2 places weve been to had no wine glasses!

And - not related - but so many s/c properties dont have a full length mirror. Just because im on holiday doesnt mean I dont care what I look like!

suburburban · 31/07/2026 19:37

I’ve seen a lemon squeezer before in holiday accommodation but I think I took my own this year

tomatoplants · 31/07/2026 20:07

I’d expect the cheese grater but not the squeezer. Everywhere we have stayed has had a grater and we use a lot

CalmDownAndChill · 31/07/2026 20:15

I wouldn’t expect those

DelphiniumBlue · 31/07/2026 20:45

Cheese grater, for sure. If you are self-catering, you'll want grated cheese with the obligatory spag bol, no?
A lemon squeezer is nice to have, but you could manage without.

Why is an oven glove a necessity? I’ve never owned one in the 50 years since I left home.
