Would you expect these items in a holiday rental?

Cheese grater?

I highlighted to a holiday host that these missing items would have been useful and she felt they weren't standard items.

What random items have you also expected but not had? Oven gloves are sometimes not provided. I've stayed in a place without a sieve.

I wouldn’t miss any of those on holiday tbh. You can buy sliced lemons, or squeeze them by hand. Buy grated cheese. If I’m on holiday I make things as easy for myself as possible. As long as there’s a corkscrew, bottle opener, ice cubes….

I think 'highlighting" them to the holiday let owner makes you sound really picky! Even if you would have liked them its not really a big enough deal to tell the host!

Grater yes. Lemon squeezer no. i don’t even have one in my own house.

Really? How do you safely get items from the oven??

A cheese grater is as bog-standard a kitchen utensil as a frying pan.

I'd be fine with none of them, we buy grated cheese on holiday for ease and having found not fully clean graters in the past. Unlikely to need a lemon squeezer and it's easy to do by hand and we will happily use a teatowel as an oven glove (especially given that oven gloves might not be changed between lets).

Think it really depends on the accommodation. Basic, home (UK) or abroad - definitely no grater - An expensive, upmarket then yes probably to the grater. Lemon squeezer I haven’t even got one at home so definitely wouldn’t expect in holiday rental!

No I wouldn’t. But I wouldn’t have been looking for them.

The only thing I’ve highlighted recently that I expected was an AirB&B apartment with no dishwasher which didn’t provide a starter washing up kit. I would have expected washing up liquid, J cloth/sponge and a T towel. It was quite an upmarket place, newly refurbished and I couldn’t understand why they didn’t provide the basic stuff to keep the place clean.

I used to work cleaning fairly basic static caravan (so small kitchens) holiday lets and even they had a cheese grater. I’d expect that.

Lemon squeezer I wouldn’t.

I always shave cheese with a potato peeler, and I would expert one of those.

Cheese graters can be difficult to clean and have a tendency to rust so I can imagine these becoming disused quite quickly .

Grater yes, lemon juicer no. I don't think I've ever actually used one, I just squeeze it with my hand.

I also don't own oven gloves, and wouldn't use them in a holiday let either if they were provided. They're always slightly scorched and of dubious cleanliness. I just use a folded tea towel or a proper catering hot cloth.

I also think oven gloves are quite clumsy, I find I drop things when using them as they're too thick.

Lemon squeezer no. Cheese grater absolutely yes otherwise how do you grate cheese onto your beans on toast?!

You can use a fork to squeeze lemons. I've never had a cheese grater rust though and agree that oven gloves make it difficult to pick things out of the oven. Folded tea towel is easier.

I have a ‘pretty basic’ holiday rental. There’s two types of cheese grater. It’s a very basic item and I’d expect one everywhere.
Lemon squeezer no but if someone gave me feedback I’d get one.
oven gloves absolutely!

I use a tea towel folded lengthways. I find it much easier and less bulky to use than when Ive used other people’s oven gloves in the past.

lemon squeezer - no (you can use a fork for squeezing lemons)

i’d also expect a cafeteria or way to brew coffee
i’d like a veg peeler, but always pack my own, as most places don’t seem to have them.
I also appreciate an ice cube tray.

Oven gloves are provided by the linen rental company via the package offered. Cheese grater provided by me but I haven’t put in a lemon squeezer. Very easy to squeeze a lemon by hand.

I don’t think I would expect either - you can buy grated cheese and lemon juice so it’s not like you can’t have either product if they aren’t provided. But in practice I think most places I’ve stayed have had both.

Fair enough. I’ve done that when gloves in wash, but don’t find them protective enough. But I do see your point about clumpiness.

I've stayed in a place without pans, plates or cutlery- someone who lived there permanently kept them in her room- so they didn't go missing! I bought several items in a charity shop before i discovered this.

Thinking about it both these items can be tricky to get 100% clean if there isn’t a dishwasher in there as they both have small holes where fragments of food get stuck.

if we self cater I just grate some cheese and put it in Tupperware before we go the grater could have bits of fingernail or dead skin or old food stuck to it!

and a lemon juicer???? That’s an odd thing to consider essential we use ours pancake day that’s it! Otherwise I buy actual lemon juice x
