Would you expect these items in a holiday rental?

Lemon squeezer?
Cheese grater?

I highlighted to a holiday host that these missing items would have been useful and she felt they weren't standard items.

What random items have you also expected but not had? Oven gloves are sometimes not provided. I've stayed in a place without a sieve.

Definitely to a cheese grater and oven gloves (even in a basic place). Wouldn’t expect a lemon squeezer.

Thanks everyone! I can see the point about a lemon squeezer being less "essential" than a cheese grater! I think in future I'll add these two items to the basic stuff I take with me on a self-catering holiday. I already take my stovetop cafetière and decent sharp knife. We cook all but 2-3 days a week on holiday.

I burn myself every time I use a folded tea towel as an oven glove!

@hippospot Those cafetières don’t work on induction hobs. I’d rather you didn’t take one into my property. Can you not use the cafetière provided or the Nespresso pod coffee machine I provide? Renting out is such a lottery in terms of who you get! I have decent cooks knives too!

Are you the actual host? If so, I think your 2 responses are pretty poor form. Are you suggesting you lost the lottery with OP?

A box grater is very standard unless perhaps it is a 1 bed city centre flat where actual self-catering is less likely.

A lemon squeezer, less standard, but I have certainly usually seen one provided. Especially if there are baking items such as mixing bowls, cake tins, etc. Easy for you and I to squeeze lemons perhaps, but you might consider that not everyone has good hand strength or dexterity.

OP hasn't actually complained on here about coffee making or the knives in your place, from what I've seen.

Whenever I've stayed somewhere with a Nespresso, it was disappointing as they never provided a decent selection, just the leftovers from variety packs that no-one else wanted - like 5 decafs and 1 ultra strong. (I don't have one myself, so wouldn't buy/ bring my own pods.)

Today is the day I've realised I have never in donkey's years looked for a cheese grater in any place I have rented 😂😂

@BalakayAARon I own a holiday home - yes. I provide a good cheese grater and a zest grater too - hope that makes me a decent holiday home. Lemon juicer - no. There’s a standard cafetière and a pod coffee machine. Why anyone needs extra coffee making facilities is beyond me and I’m pointing out the stove top ones rarely work on an induction hob. Most people can squeeze a lemon! Yes. Taking own knife was mentioned and frankly, bring your own coffee! Why expect the house owner to provide you with food and drink? Guests know what pod the coffee machine takes, so pretty easy to buy the pods you like, if you are not tight, or bring ground coffee for the cafetière. Pods come in packs of 10 and you buy what you need for the stay - easy!!! I just don’t want old stove top cafetières ruining my hob. That’s reasonable.

Do you never buy lemons? It would never occur to me to buy lemon juice.

Finely dice or make something else? Personally I usually base my cooking plans around the equipment that’s available when I get to a place.

What were you doing that required freshly squeezed lemons?

For some reason many of the places we have stayed in didn't have any egg cups, so we always take these with us now.

Cheese grater I would expect. I don’t even own a lemon squeezer at home so no to that one. Definitely expect oven gloves!

Cheese grater, yes. So standard I have two at home. I've never had a holiday let without one, even the crap holiday lets.

Lemon squeezer, no. I didn't get one until I was over 50 and frankly a waste of money.

It’s pretty normal for the host to provide yeast and coffee, I can’t think of one I’ve stayed at that hasn’t provided a few tea bags/coffee sachets to get you started.

I don’t like pod machines and don’t use them, but I’d be happy with the caffetier. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t want a customer to bring their own into your property though, what do you think they’re going to do with it?

I have a standard packing list for self catering including sharp cooking knives, grater, tea towels and oven gloves. I’ve never used a lemon squeezer on holiday.

Definitely cheese grater, beans on toast and jacket potatoes staple when on self catering hols.

I have a holiday let and have both of those things. Someone complained that there wasn’t a salad spinner once. You can’t win.

I would definitely expect a cheese grater. I've stayed in loads of holiday rentals, and have never not had a grater.
I'd be pleased if there was a lemon squeezer, but wouldn't be annoyed if there wasn't.

Nearly all food is enhanced by freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Yes I always have lemons and limes in my fridge.

use lemon juice for salad dressings, marinades, on fish etc

I never have and I never will cook in a holiday home! Especially, not something that requires a grater or a juicer!

oven glove - I’m on the fence. On one hand,(no pun intended) you need something to remove things from the oven, on the other hand- I wouldn’t want to use oven gloves that someone I didn’t know had been using plus likely to be a tad grubby unless the host is able to wash between guests - so maybe yes! Although I’d probably still use a towel incase someone with some weird skin disease had been there before me
