I'm curious, how much did your summer holiday cost this year?

How much are people paying to go on holiday this year?

Our stats:
2 adults 2 children
1 week in July to Lanzarote
Basic 2 star self catering apts, small pool, all clean and pleasant. No luxury.
£1800
Spending money approx £1500

We eat out for lunch and dinner each day, visit a music bar/play pool after dinner and do a few local day trips but kids happy with pool/beach/playparks. They could run up and down a wall beside stairs for hours!

I pass by some of the bigger hotels with the entertainment and activities and wonder if we would like that. Would anyone share how much they are paying for these types of holidays?

Just wondering how much people are paying for different holidays and also, as an aside, when is the best time to book for best deals?

You don’t know that other people have more incoming money than you do? Does it surprise you when David Beckham goes on holiday despite the “cost of living”?

10 days in Greece:
Self-catering villa with pool £2500
Car hire £300
Spending money £1500

Flights are on Avios points - they would have been another £3k otherwise. We always save up Avios for the summer holiday as it’s the most expensive time to fly.

We’ll eat out in the local fishing village every night - we’re returning to a place we’ve been to before so know the local area.

Can I ask how easy you find it to book flights? We’ll be using Avios in the summer holidays for the first time and I’m a bit nervous about ease with availability etc!

@ElleintheWoods this is how we book all ours- but we work for ourselves and no kids involved so it’s a lot easier - I do a lot of late June/early July ones and early to mid September ones. I book on booking.com on flexible, keep monitoring and often then flick and pay ‘non refundable’ at a better price 4 days before, if still available.

Indeed, pencilling in a flexible hotel and then booking at a better rate as the price drops is a great hack 😊

7 nights in Corfu, August
5 star all inclusive resort & flights
2 adults & 1 child-free place

We find availability quite limited - especially to popular destinations. The key seems to be to book in advance. It helps to have a date and destination in mind and then just keep checking back to see if flights have been released.

Websites like Seatspy.com will also help you to find what’s out there. Good luck!

1 adult 2 kids to Greece next week (in Scotland) for 7 days
4* hotel all inclusive and including transfers was £1800

Btowngirl · 25/07/2026 19:39

Egypt 5* all inc in May - £800pp, one child free (TUI) so totalled £2,400 for 2 adults & 2 children. Pools & all inclusive was amazing, liked some of the entertainment but we don’t do loads of it as our girls are early risers.

Gran Canaria, just got back last week 5 days in a gorgeous air b&b with its own pool, fruit trees & loads of space. We stayed with 3 other couples & their children. Total cost for us was £650 for accom, £750 for flights, £40 for a rental car and about £120 on food shopping. It was in the mountains so we only went out once for a walk & ice cream. We have rebooked this for next year as it was ace!

ScotiaLass · 25/07/2026 19:52

We decided to stay in Scotland this year and have managed to book one week self catering in a cottage, three nights self catering in a lodge in the grounds of a hotel with facilities and a couple of nights camping for less than £1000. We've done 2/3 of the trips so far and had a great time. Hoping to get lucky again with the weather for our final trip.

People have differing amounts of disposable cash to spend on holidays. That’s nothing new.

i find it weird that it would make you cringe

7000 Maldives for 9 nights

Filterphobia · 25/07/2026 20:19

We are off to Rhodes tomorrow. We always go in school holidays and book at least a year in advance. We used to do AI but only when the children were little, we prefer to get out and about and explore places more now we have teens.
We have paid £4800 for 14 nights self catering in a 3* apartment.
Car hire booked for the duration £450
Spends for food, fuel and days out £3000
I feel like this is a lot!

We have booked Corfu for next year and managed to get that for £3800 for 14 nights but in a 2* apartment.

XelaM · 25/07/2026 20:20

I love the clever bargains on this thread. Some people clearly have a knack for finding a great deal and some of the more original locations make me want to book (although I'm currently broke 😬) 😃

No. The £27,000 is an indulgent Granny taking her children and grandchildren on a once in a lifetime family holiday.

I feel so lucky to have done this trip as part of my round the world trip 2 decades ago. Our first stop was NY in America so we just headed to Florida afterwards. It was just the Greyhound fare to get the ‘holiday of a lifetime’ as we even managed to stay in a 5* hotel for 2 weeks for the cost of a hostel.

The flights round the world (7 stops only cost £2k too).

Feel very lucky.

We couldn’t justify £30k for the same trip these days now that we’re a family of 4. One of our kids went with their school, just £3k for a week and the other will have to make their own plans to get there one day.

Hope you have lots of fun.

mustardrarebit · 25/07/2026 20:48

About 3.5k for family of 5. Driving across Europe for 6 days to stay in family home in central Europe for 2 weeks, 6 days across Europe on the way home, but a different route. Includes day trips like theme parks and water parks. We stay in basic hotels because it's just a place to shower and sleep before moving on. The 2 week stay in the middle is virtually free, we contribute to food and go out for meals.

Talkingfrog · 25/07/2026 20:53

£775 for a self catering cottage in north wales for 3 people.

£1800 for Eurocamp for 10 days. That’s with upgraded accommodation. Site has two pool areas. Activities onsite for kids that are free and done activities that are paid.

£450 for Euro tunnel

We will spend around £500 on food and drink - we bbq every night as a bbq grill comes with the accommodation.

£40 of the kids want to do anything extra onsite - they mostly just make friends and play football most of the day and swim.

£250 on petrol.

2 adults. 2 teenagers.

Do you go on trips? Drive around to visit local towns and villages? Visit historic sites? Vist the nearest cities? Shop in local markets and artisan shops?

fromgothtoboss · 25/07/2026 23:07

1K for seven nights in Airbnb holiday house in Devon, August summer holidays, 2 adults 2 kids

We are going away next Easter holidays for 10 nights to lake Garda, which will come in at 1.5K for flights/luggage/transfers and Eurocamp accommodation.

I prefer to stretch our budget over 3 breaks a year in Easter holidays, may half term and August (so usually one eurocamp trip somewhere abroad and two uk breaks) rather than one bigger expensive holiday. That may change in the future.

LT1233 · 25/07/2026 23:09

2 weeks in a private apartment in Spain mid August.

3 adults 1 teenager
1100 flights & bags.
2000 apartment.
2300ish for hire car, self catering, restaurants, excursions.

£5400 ish

In August I've got a week in Looe, Cornwall self catering apartment, sleeps 4, £1300, for 2 x adults and 1 x 11y.o

Normally we have pasty for lunch and go out for dinner each night so probably spend around extra 1k while we're there.

We like hiking and beach so probably won't spend much on days out.

You’re spending £140 on dinner every night for the two of you and an eleven year-old kid??
