How much are people paying to go on holiday this year?

Our stats:
2 adults 2 children
1 week in July to Lanzarote
Basic 2 star self catering apts, small pool, all clean and pleasant. No luxury.
£1800
Spending money approx £1500

We eat out for lunch and dinner each day, visit a music bar/play pool after dinner and do a few local day trips but kids happy with pool/beach/playparks. They could run up and down a wall beside stairs for hours!

I pass by some of the bigger hotels with the entertainment and activities and wonder if we would like that. Would anyone share how much they are paying for these types of holidays?

Just wondering how much people are paying for different holidays and also, as an aside, when is the best time to book for best deals?

Do you work? If so, how do you manage to get (at least) 15 days off in the summer holidays?

What was the local town like? How did you find the people, and the food?

Are you asking how somone gets 2 weeks annual leave?

I am amazed by how many people go for all-inclusive. Surely that means you end up paying double for food when you go out to a local restaurant for dinner?

It would be up to them if they were. Still cheaper than a lot of the holidays being mentioned.

Assuming the 11 year old has adult portions it would be around £45 each. More than I would choose to pay for an evening meal, but you can easily end up paying £25 or £30 per person in places like the harvester, just having main, dessert and drinks.

Also the poster didn't say all if that money was being spent on food. It may also be going towards activites.

When you have hungry teens, or enjoy a large breakfast and/or cocktails by the pool/at night. it often works out cheaper to get AI and eat out/have days out etc than to have to buy every single meal, snack and drink. Does depends on the location, hotel and deal you get though.

Also, I have allergies and ND so I need to know I have somewhere I can eat safely (I check reviews for places where the chefs are allergy aware etc).

In other places it makes more sense to go self catering, bed and breakfast or half board etc. Really does depend on where you are going.

Lots of places don’t allow it. My DP has worked same place nearly 20years. A couple of times it’s been booked then cancelled by managers and we’ve had to cancel our holiday. Also in all these years we rarely get a school holiday date allowed, we gave up asking for a few years as every Easter it would be rejected. He’s in a professional role and has worked his way up but annual leave is still a nightmare. He’s had two days off so far this year.

I also know some places it’s only a week allowed per month so the only way to get two weeks is to book last week of say July first week of august. If your work colleagues haven’t already got those dates.

Sounds like he works for a horrible employer. No reputable employer behaves this way.

Also, some posters could be teachers who have all school holidays off.

I used to have a career, I now have health problems and can’t work. My last career based role was terrible for annual leave, much worse than his. For example one week only allowed off for the entire summer holidays. At the time I was a lone parent so if I had known of this rule in advance I’d never had taken the job. I had a long chat with my work colleagues about that one, they were all male, about how do they all manage with this rule but they had very accommodating wives.

and yes of course teachers get the holidays.

I think these are the reasons we don’t really holiday properly like other people do as we’ve got so used to never being allowed the dates we wanted.

This September we had paid a deposit for a uk caravan break dates were then declined as supposedly a mandatory conference my DP had to attend. We’ve checked and the conference still isn’t in his calendar. So next I booked a local break just for myself for a couple of nights as I’d had enough of it, only possible on those dates if my DP wfh to cover the rescue pets. That was all organised and fine initially then his manager added a three days away meeting. So I had to cancel that too. So I’m in awe of people getting long preplanned holidays!

This is really horrible and not ok at all!! Your DP should look for another job. That's really sad to read 😔 employers should prioritise their workers' wellbeing

Two summer holidays this year. 2 adults - no children

a Spanish holiday AI for a week and then 11 nights in America £14k for both including our spending money.

holiday to us are a big thing and we go away every half term/end of term. (I don’t pay out for trips and luxuries at home to afford our holidays)

7 nights family of 5 plus a dog on the south coast in a mid range caravan £855 including certain activities plus a further £120 on extra prebooked activities. We had £900 spending and have just over £100 left. We visited 2 bucket list destinations and ate out 5 out of 7 nights.

We were lucky to get term time prices as DCs had inset days at the end of term. It would have been at least £800 more if we did it a week later.

we filled up on soft drinks, ice pops, ice creams, fruit, bread rolls, deli meats, snacks and cheeses to ensure gaps were filled as these are what we find we struggle with, day time snacks and ice creams cost so much that we save a fortune not needing to buys this stuff when out.

At my work you can have 11 consecutive days leave or more if approved by a manager, I don't think this is unusual to have 2 weeks off?

@AmateurDad I’m a primary school teacher, I get 6 weeks summer holiday 😱

I also have a week in Spain booked for October half term. That was £2200 SC

We're doing 10 days in a Eurocamp in Brittany - 2 adults, 2 kids. Accommodation and ferry comes to £2200 I think, not accounting for spending money/food, petrol etc

@AmateurDadit depends on the employer. Mine (law firms) have always allowed 2 weeks off but no more. DH is a contractor, so he takes what he wants. You don't need more than 14 days off for a 2 week holiday though, assuming you work weekdays and travel on the weekend.

Five nights in Crete, with DH and two adult DC. Three nights apartment and two nights in an All Inclusive to see what it is like. Total spend was £3,500 for flights, car, accommodation and all eating out. DH did a spreadsheet!

I’ve been 20+ times and very familiar with what you can do and on what budgets.

Also very aware it’s possible to spend far less and still have a great time, and that’s true for most holidays in my experience.

Everything I’ve booked has been an informed choice, but thank you for your concern….

We paid £588 for a week in Anglesey in August, right on the beach.

we will go to the beach and have sandwiches for lunch. May eat out once or twice int he evening
1 week in Greece - flights £960
accom- free staying with family who will feed us - although we will offer to pay for groceries and a meal but they never accept groceries but we will insist on taking them for a meal out.
car hire £105

we holiday as cheaply as possible as kids go to private school so have to prioritise money for education.
