I'm curious, how much did your summer holiday cost this year?

How much are people paying to go on holiday this year?

Our stats:
2 adults 2 children
1 week in July to Lanzarote
Basic 2 star self catering apts, small pool, all clean and pleasant. No luxury.
£1800
Spending money approx £1500

We eat out for lunch and dinner each day, visit a music bar/play pool after dinner and do a few local day trips but kids happy with pool/beach/playparks. They could run up and down a wall beside stairs for hours!

I pass by some of the bigger hotels with the entertainment and activities and wonder if we would like that. Would anyone share how much they are paying for these types of holidays?

Just wondering how much people are paying for different holidays and also, as an aside, when is the best time to book for best deals?

£1500 all inclusive for 10 days in 4* hotel in Tenerife. 2 of us going but we have separate rooms

Assuming the £27k is split between at least 3 families though (as there are 6 adults)? So more like £9k per family.

Edited

No. The £27,000 is an indulgent Granny taking her children and grandchildren on a once in a lifetime family holiday.

For me what I find strange is if I had $250,000+ to drop on a holiday I wouldn’t spend it on a 7500 passenger cruise! $250,000 holiday and I assume we are talking top 1% rich, and if I was that rich I wouldn’t want to be on holiday with 7500 other normal people paying less than $10,000 😂 I know there’s the suite access spaces, but surely you’d be avoiding most of the boat? Or maybe I’m an insufferable snob 😂 (I love cruising; but I doubt it would be my choice with that money, I’d hire a yacht!)

I do like the idea of the ship within a ship things, we went last year and honestly having access to the suite only areas did make it feel more exclusive and less crowded and peopley. But yes, if I had that level of wealth I would be as far away from all the people as possible 😂

Two adults, one child at a deluxe AI (Ikos Odisia, Corfu). £10k’ish for 8 nights - obviously flights, transfers and all food and drink is included

Have you been before? Honestly reading this thread and a few mentions of Ikos resorts has made me look them up and they look lovely. We already have next years holiday booked but they look great and definitely feel like we need to give it a try. Ive never done all inclusive (I suppose a cruise technically is but not an AI resort) so we are trying one next year but these resorts do look lovely.

Sgtmajormummy · 24/07/2026 14:56

I’ve just watched all three seasons of The White Lotus (imaginary luxury hotel chain) and one thing is clear: your demons will follow you on holiday, no matter how much you spend!

So are you the granny? If not then it’s not what you spent on your summer holiday.

QuaintBeaker · 23/07/2026 20:22

So far I've booked a long weekend in a caravan for £360 😳

Having read this thread in feeling sorry for my children now

Please don't. I honestly think that how much children enjoy their summer holidays has almost no relation to how much they cost!

(there might be more of a relation for adults, but even then, only up to a point!)

WindyW · 24/07/2026 15:37

Flat in France for a week £770
Eurotunnel £350
Own car, not sure how much petrol
Around £500 spending money, mostly self catering
Family of 4

The question in the OP is “how much did your summer holiday cost”. That poster’s answer is fine regardless of whether they are the granny or not.

Im not saying that every post is a lie at all, ive posted my own costs on here, what I said is people do lie online, take it with a pinch of salt and those people who said they felt crappy seeing all these costs I am saying dont take it as gospel.

Unfortunately people will and do lie online and you have no way of knowing who is truthful and who isnt and I would hate the idea of anyone feeling crappy seeing these numbers when you just have no clue what is real and what isnt. My post was more to say take anything you see online with a pinch of salt, nothing more, im not saying everyone is lying.

Ok, doesn’t really align with “half” being “utter crap”.

We spent 900 on a little holiday cottage in Wales and ate out once and self catered the rest, went for walks mostly, parking free in lots of places or just a few quid, packed lunch and a thermos.

i feel very very old school, and very old, and very poor compared to everyone else 😁😁😁

but it is what we like, so really we are lucky

will do a few beach days here in the South of England too.

£43K on a holiday is just stupid. Not even multi-millionaires I know spend this much on a holiday. Unless you're a WAG and bringing the whole football team on holiday with you?

A few of my friends haven taken holidays with Audley Travel. Using this as as an example as you can see the prices on the website and plenty of holidays are around £8k per person. If you are a family of four or five and add in some spending money (the holidays don't include all meals) then you are easily at that kind of level. These people are obviously very well off, but not multi-millionaires by any means. Just high-earning.

I wouldn't use Audley. In most cases I know I can put together a very similar holiday myself for much less. I prefer the adventure of more independent travel and am happy to mix in some very low cost stays with some more extravagant elements. But these are not considered crazily expensive holidays among many of the people I know and those people are not ultra wealthy.

pinkspeakers · 24/07/2026 15:53

I have to say I am a bit impressed (and shamed) by all the people who know how much their spending money will be, or was. I rarely add mine up. My holidays are probably more expensive than I like to think they are...

That sounds like my kind of holiday. 🙂

We've had ours. Ten nights in Venice in a self catering apartment which was actually like a house, me, DH and two older kids. Ate out for pretty much all meals, flew with BA, and had a water taxi to and from the island. Lots of entry fees for galleries, exhibitions, museums etc, plus gelato out and about. (Although we do get reduced entry to exhibitions etc because DD is disabled so she and I go free to most things)

£6k approx. DH hasn't done the final tally yet.

Venice was surprisingly affordable, accommodation wasn't expensive and the food costs were a little bit cheaper than here in the UK. There's loads to do in terms of museums and exhibitions although obviously there's no beach unless you go over to Lido. We initially looked at the Greek Islands but they were massively more expensive so I would recommend Venice as a family holiday because we had a great time.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/07/2026 16:01

@pinkspeakers I use a Monzo card which helpfully adds up everything you spent on your holiday and send you a little report (so you can be horrified when you get back!).

We don't tend to have a strict budget but for example in France this year we budgeted at a minimum for a cheap breakfast (bakery pastry and coffee), one main meal and one snack meal (eg bar snacks or bakery filled baguette) plus alcoholic drinks each day. We will then budget for excursions separately but a lot of the stuff we do day to day is free - sight seeing etc.. or pretty low cost - under 10 euros a ticket.

Ok, doesn’t really align with “half” being “utter crap”.

Has most of your contribution here just been digging at other posters? And yes I do believe half of whats posted on mumsnet is utter crap and thats exactly what I said. Its you thats equated that to me saying half the posts on this thread are lies, but thats not my issue if you read one thing and infer another.

My post also very clearly said "I reckon half the posts on mumsnet are utter crap" so thats my opinion, which I am entitled to, as are you and those two things may not necessarily align.

Im not sure what is going on with you that means most of the posts you have contributed seem to be picking on what others are posting but maybe take a step back if you are that upset by what others say. My intention was to help others not feel so shitty themselves, im sorry if that offends you so much.

Barryselection · 24/07/2026 16:06

I’m actually shocked about the amount people spend for only a weeks holiday!! I presume a lot of these are package??

We spent about £8000 (maybe slightly more) but had three weeks island hopping in Greece for that. 2 five star hotels and two apart-hotels. One child two adults. It was worth it!!!

I'm even worse because I book the transport and accommodation, forgetting about the need to eat/pay entry fees, and then get cranky at needing to fork out more money.

I reckon half of what you see on Mumsnet is utter crap” so that logically applies to any post. And it was said specifically in the context of not worrying about the answers on this particular post.

I’m not upset about anything, I didn’t even bother with your post, just agreed with someone who made the point that they’d told the truth because it’s anonymous.

Ok so you read one thing and inferred another, that's fine but everything that I have stated stands. I did not say I believe half the posts on this thread are lies, I said half of whats posted on mumsnet and I stand by that. If you want to infer that this means half of each post is rubbish, thats your misunderstanding and thats absolutely illogical and makes no sense whatsoever but that is your perogative. And if you want to argue against a post thats sole intention was to stop people feeling crap, then again thats on you but its confusing why you would be so offended by a post intended to attempt to make people feel less crap.

If your post is genuine then this doesnt even apply to you. I shall leave you to it though and am not going to keep derailing.

A week camping. Campsite is £340. We'll eat out for lunch most days, have lots of ice creams and then have steak for dinner 3 nights. Activities etc. Expect to spend at least £1500 so about £2k including petrol.

Tessasanderson · 24/07/2026 16:34

2 adults all inclusive to Tui Sensatori in Rhodes. Swim up pool room, free mini bar restocked daily. Access to adults only facilities so no children. Choice of booking resteraunts for 2 of the days and adults only eating for the rest. 5 days £1200 each. Had £100 on a monza card and came back with most of it unused.

I used to work in first and business at Trailfinders. I once had a 19 year old pop in and pay me 30 grand in cash to take his girlfriend to the Maldives. I had nurse drop 150k on a safari for a family of 5. Nothing surprises me. Plenty of people have independent wealth and choose to spend it on travel, or just earn well and prioritise it.

Tbh I love to travel, if DH and I were rich I'd happily spend a huge amount on it. As it is our annual holiday budget is 20k, which I'm sure some people would think is obscene, but I'm happy with our choices.

Around £750 for a week in Orkney, including fuel, ferries, campsites, all food, drink, occasional eating out and various admission fees to historic sites, museums etc. And a lovely hour in a horse box sauna this morning with sea dips. 1 adult and 1 student teenager in a wee camper and a backpacking tent. It’s been fab!
