100ml limit

This might sound like a stupid question but can I decant our suncream into smaller bottles so they can go through hand luggage or do they have to be in the original bottles?
We are only going abroad for a few nights so not taking hold luggage but the miniature suncream is almost as expensive as the 200ml bottle!

I can’t see why suncream would be different to any other decanted liquid to be honest

needapokerface · 06/05/2026 13:48

Yes you can decant as long as the bottle 100ml or less you can have as many as you want.

paintedpanda · 06/05/2026 13:49

Thank you. I haven’t flown in ages and when I have I’ve had hold luggage so I’m not sure on the rules!

Yes there may be a total limit of 1 litre - best check your airport both ways

Cherrybomb00 · 06/05/2026 13:53

Lots of UK airports have scrapped the 100ml limit now, double check if you definitely need to decant it

ConnieHeart · 06/05/2026 13:54

Check with the airline as the rules are changing. You can also take empty water bottles & fill up after security

Even if your UK departure airport has scrapped the 100ml limit, there is no guarantee that the airport you are returning from will have done the same, so it's always worth double checking.

TT4eva82 · 06/05/2026 13:56

You can, as long as all of your mini bottles fit into one of those sandwich bags they have at the airport you’ll be fine, one bag per passenger.
Like someone else said double check your airport because some have scraped the limit.

paintedpanda · 06/05/2026 14:05

We’re flying from Liverpool but I haven’t flown from there since I was a teenager! I’ve checked and it says bottles under 100ml don’t need to go in a bag but it doesn’t say anything about bottles over 100ml.
Apparently they also don’t have boots there anymore!

Just get some out there

MoltenLasagne · 06/05/2026 14:26

Be careful decanting suncream - I did this a few years ago into the reusable bottles and it had some weird reaction inside the bottle and went grainy. Ended up having to buy more out there!

Yes never decant nail varnish remover from its original bottle 😬

bugalugs45 · 06/05/2026 14:33

You can definitely decant sun cream , I did it last year , it’s a faff though , and although works out more expensive I’d just buy 100ml size now , boots soltan do minis ( 50ml ) as do others x

100ml limit
minipie · 06/05/2026 14:43

Agree with pp I would just buy some there. But yes you can decant. Every bottle needs to be 100ml or less size to meet the liquid rules - you can’t take a bigger bottle even if it’s nearly empty and has less than 100ml in, as they won’t be able check how much is actually in there . As pp said some airports have dropped the rules but others haven’t.

minipie · 06/05/2026 14:44

Oh the other option is buying in the airport after security

Tryingtokeepgoing · 06/05/2026 14:52

The main UK airports no longer have a 100ml limit (it's 2 litres) or require liquids and electronics to be removed from bags., However some regional airports like Manchester, Luton and Glasgow do. I have no experience of Liverpool. More importantly, many EU / International airports do still have limits. Now, for sunscreen, moisturiser and toothpaste that wouldn't bother me, as I'd just leave any that I had left in the hotel when checking out But, you might not want to do that with more expensive things!!

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 06/05/2026 16:56

Yes you can put it in 100ml bottle. Or you can buy a full sized one in Boots after security

dementedpixie · 06/05/2026 17:10

Liverpool.seems to say you can take liquids under 100mls without needing to use a plastic bag so sounds like you can take as many as you like as long as they are the correct size. Yes you can decant into smaller bottles although ive heard some airport staff can be funny about the bottles you use and they may need to have the 100ml amount printed /embossed on them

Thecows · 06/05/2026 18:01

Think Heathrow and Gatwick have scrapped the 100ml rule

This!

FictionalCharacter · 06/05/2026 18:26

You can definitely decant. I bought a set of good quality travel bottles and have decanted sunscreen, aftersun and body lotion many times.

HCmumma · 06/05/2026 19:59

Why don’t you just buy a 100ml bottle or less of suncream Then you don’t need to decant anything.

paintedpanda · 06/05/2026 20:51

I would normally buy at the airport but when I googled it said that Liverpool airport no longer has a Boots! I like their Soltan Once suncream, tried and tested for our sensitive skin.
I saw the Soltan miniature pack which I almost bought but I really do like the once a day cream. I’m reluctant to buy the miniature one because it’s £6 for 50ml but £10 for 200ml!
I will decant the suncream into a smaller bottle. Thanks all!

Are you flying from heathrow? If yes then the 100ml limits no longer apply

if no then yes you can decant into 100ml travel bottles. Can get them cheap in primark
