To absolutely hate flying.

Does anyone else on here hate flying?
I do it to get to nice places, but have about 3 glasses of wine before I get on the plane.

I also hate flying . It’s a means to an end , as I love travelling. Diazepam is the only thing that works for me .

wanttoworkbut · 30/04/2026 15:14

I don't fly for environmental reasons, but by happy coincidence I find it exhausting and much prefer a train journey with scenery and a cafe bar.

How does it make you feel? And does your GP prescribe it?

I hate flying and am already starting to dread our holiday in May half term.

I used to use Valium. After years of working on it, don’t even need a drink. Sudoku, mindfulness, positive self talk and never avoiding it.

Yes you are!
The pilots do their job and are keen to get home too.
If its a safety issue do you avoid cars too?

Please don’t be like the (probably drunk) woman who sat in the row behind me on my last flight, talked/shouted the whole flight to her partner whilst simultaneously playing a film on her phone at max volume?

AgnesX · 30/04/2026 15:24

I don't mind the actual flight that much, it's the faffing about beforehand i.e. customs, boarding, people..... baggage pickup.

All I want these days is to get there or back again. Beam me up Scottie.

ThePeewit · 30/04/2026 15:25

DH used to have a few drinks, then got valium prescribed. This was 30 years ago, he's fine now. Doesn't enjoy it but tolerates it.

Littlebitpsycho · 30/04/2026 15:25

I am absolutely terrified of flying. Completely and utterly terrified. Think panic attacks, crying, shaking, struggling to breathe. I know its irrational but I cant help it. I didn't used to be too bad when I flew regularly but I haven't flown in about 2 and half years now, and I doubt I could actually make myself board a plane now.

I promised DD that when she turned 14 I'd take her to Poland (she's a WW2 history geek) and now the time has come I'm just putting it off. And I feel so guilty I'm letting her down.

For me it's utterly debilitating

PS its only take off i can't stand, as soon as we're up and the seat belt sign turns off I'm as cool as a cucumber

maddiemookins16mum · 30/04/2026 15:30

I used to love it. But since 9/11 I’ve become very nervous especially the take off and first 10 minutes. Once we’re up I’m fine. Landing no problem. It’s weird.

KeeleyJ · 30/04/2026 15:35

Diazepan sorted me, 5mg rings a bell. I didn't feel any different, it just stopped my heart racing in panic giving me back control over me. Doctor did tell me to have a trial run at home though so I knew what to expect.

Only thing that I really noticed after taking the pills is I turned terribly sociable on the plane and actually said hello to my row neighbour and offered him a sweetie. Poor bloke was terrified at this overly friendly lady actually acknowledging his existence on the plane 😆.

Downside - don't drink booze with diazepan which for me is fine as I won't pay airport or plane booze prices anyway.

I am the same, hate takeoff. I fly a 4.5 hour trip 3x a year. I am so afraid of take off..once levelled out, I am fine..landing fine! I have no idea why I am like this

Dontcallmescarface · 30/04/2026 15:46

I'm absolutely terrified...I've only been abroad twice in my life on a plane ( well 3 times, but as I was 6 months old when I first flew, I have no memory of that trip), both times were for family weddings and the flights were paid for by someone else so I had to do it. I have a high tolerance for sedatives and so cannot take them unless it's under medical supervision so cannot take any prior to going on a plane. I'm 60 now and I doubt I'll ever be airborne again, my heart will probably give up.

Badbadbunny · 30/04/2026 15:51

There are only two things I hate about flying.

Firstly, the hell hole known as Manchester Airport. Utterly miserable staff at every turn. Unfortunately it's our closest, but I still try to find alternative flights from Liverpool, Leeds or even Newcastle and happy to put up with longer distance and more cost to avoid Manchester.

Secondly, I hate the way people are so jam packed into planes. I'd happily pay more for wider seats, longer leg room, etc. Fewer people on planes would also mean shorter queues for loos, quicker serving time for meals, shorter queues checking boarding passes, etc. When possible and feasible, I've happily paid more for flight operators who have "premium economy" or a few times even for business class. Doesn't shorten the queues to get on/off, but at least you're not sat on someone's knee and don't have someone snoring in your ear. Not bothered about the "frills" such as better meals or other gimmicks, I just want my own space!

TofuTuesday · 30/04/2026 16:11

I hate it. I have bladder issues and being trapped in discomfort or pain and sometimes also needing a wee is awful. Hate the whole cramped in a box feeling. Hate the other passengers bundling on and off and pushing to get on/off not respecting anyone’s frailty or position in the plane.

ginasevern · 30/04/2026 16:31

I haven't flown for a very long time but I was never "happy" about it. Take off and landing were the worst but OK once we'd levelled off. I didn't show it outwardly but inside I was praying we'd make it.

maftaz · 30/04/2026 16:39

To me it's a bus with a lot of pre and post journey crap to deal with.

I am not afraid of flying, but I'd be lying if I said I don't get a jolt of fear when there is severe turbulence, or when it's a very windy landing etc. It's not knowing what the pilot is up to at those times can be a bit disconcerting!.

To ease things a bit on the journey I always check my bags in. Then I don't have to faff around looking for room in the overheads. I can also sit and wait to board at the last minute. By the time you're through passport control and have walked another hundred miles, the bags are on the carousel, same as those who put the bags above!

These days it's not the most pleasant form of transport, but is necessary for many destinations, so I suck it up and off I go.

Shallotsaresmallonions · 30/04/2026 16:44

I enjoy flying by myself. Not so much fun with toddlers though.

Latenightreader · 30/04/2026 16:48

I absolutely hate it. Used to fly a couple of times a year, now we go by train!

DorisTheFinkasaurus · 30/04/2026 16:49

Hate it. From the moment I hit the airport to the moment I return home. I hate airports. I hate travel. I hate flying. I fear it. I find it gross being in a tin can with a bunch of windy, smelly, annoying people (myself included!). It stresses me out to the maximum. I never fly if I can help it. I don't even really travel anymore and I am absolutely grand with that.

In my 20s and early 30s, my job had me spending more time in the air than on the ground at certain points. I was not cabin crew or in the airline industry at all, but my job took me everywhere and it literally made me loathe flying/travel with every cell of my body. I'm in my 50s now and honestly, if I were told I'd never travel again (in any way, shape, or form), I'd be fine with that.

I hate flying and am already starting to dread our holiday in May half term.

I feel completely calm , not sedated , just relaxed . If I didn’t take it , I may possibly miss the flight due to very frequent bathroom breaks !
My gp prescribes it for me , as he understands why I need it.

Friendlygingercat · 30/04/2026 16:55

Ive always hated flying. Its simply a means to an end. It was not so much the actual being in the air I hated. More the experience of

The way you are treated at airports
Sitting close to strangers
The standing around and queueing
Getting to and from the airport

A man once felt my thingh on a plane. I almost punched his lights out and made a show of him. I bet he regretted it.

MissyB1 · 30/04/2026 16:55

Yep hate it! I used to be fine until I hit my 40s and then the fear kicked in (no particular reason). I’m stressed the whole time I’m on the plane, I won’t do long haul anymore, the shorter the flight the better, we are going to Croatia this summer which is about 3 hours, I will struggle even with that.

I hate it. My vestibular system is rubbish so I genuinely feel awful if I'm not on terra firma. I download TV programmes onto my phone, put my headphones on and shut out everything!

PinkNailPolish2026 · 30/04/2026 17:05

I don’t mind flying it’s the behaviour of some other passengers I don’t like.
