To absolutely hate flying.

Does anyone else on here hate flying?
I do it to get to nice places, but have about 3 glasses of wine before I get on the plane.

Secondly, I hate the way people are so jam packed into planes. I'd happily pay more for wider seats, longer leg room, etc.

Did you know you can actually do this?

Nevermind17 · 30/04/2026 17:11

I’ve given up. I’ve tried everything. Alcohol, Diazepam, hypnotherapy, NLP, CBT, and the Virgin Fear of Flying course (twice). Nothing has worked. I just get the train now, and stop off at a couple of interesting places en route, and include it in the holiday.

Friendlygingercat · 30/04/2026 17:21

I don’t mind flying it’s the behaviour of some other passengers I don’t like.

Agree 100% I usually avoid sitting in the middle seat but the flight was overbooked and it was a short 2 hour flight. We had only been in the air a few minutes when I felt this mans hand agaist my thigh. I jammed my elbow hard into his chest and began yelling at him that he was a filthy pervert. He shot out of his seat on the aisle which I immediately movfed into. I told him he was no way sitting by me agtain. The cabin crew came up and found him a deilghtful seat next to the loo. Every time I passed him to go I told the people sitting near he was pervert and made him an object of attention.. It was not a comfortable flight for him and I enjoyed the power trip. I was in my 40s and packed quite a hard punch back then.

PennyThought · 30/04/2026 17:22

I'm scared of flying so much that I've only seen my family abroad two times in over 20 years. You're definitely not alone OP

Yes you are!
The pilots do their job and are keen to get home too.
If its a safety issue do you avoid cars too?

Please don’t be like the (probably drunk) woman who sat in the row behind me on my last flight, talked/shouted the whole flight to her partner whilst simultaneously playing a film on her phone at max volume?

Yes I am what?
A law abiding citizen who has 3 small glasses of wine before / during a flight?
I barely use my phone in day to day life, I am not a fan of screen time.
I don't avoid cars. I have been driving for 20 years and never had so much as a parking ticket.
Who are you to judge me?

I don't mind the actual flight that much, it's the faffing about beforehand i.e. customs, boarding, people..... baggage pickup.

All I want these days is to get there or back again. Beam me up Scottie.

Me too
I hate the faff
The waiting
The delays
the noise
Not being able to step outside
Will they have a problem with my bag
Will I get through security ( my local airport is crap and people who turn up hours ahead still miss flights because security is sooo bad)

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 30/04/2026 19:19

@BadbadbunnyThe queue is shorter for business! The business cabins are smaller! You board with BA as group 2. There’s only first and special needs ahead of you. Everyone else is behind! Then you get off pretty quickly too and get to passport control before most others. It’s significantly better. Then there are drinks coming round so what’s not to like? Overall flying isn’t wonderful and a means to an end, but you can make it more palatable.

Emmz1510 · 30/04/2026 20:07

I like flying itself, but I find airports and all the rigmarole of checking in, security, making sure you have all the right paperwork and are where you need to be on time incredibly stressful and anxiety provoking. My OH and I always end up bickering. I could do with a wee benzo to relax me during those times.

I am absolutely terrified of flying. Completely and utterly terrified. Think panic attacks, crying, shaking, struggling to breathe. I know its irrational but I cant help it. I didn't used to be too bad when I flew regularly but I haven't flown in about 2 and half years now, and I doubt I could actually make myself board a plane now.

I promised DD that when she turned 14 I'd take her to Poland (she's a WW2 history geek) and now the time has come I'm just putting it off. And I feel so guilty I'm letting her down.

For me it's utterly debilitating

PS its only take off i can't stand, as soon as we're up and the seat belt sign turns off I'm as cool as a cucumber

I feel exactly the same - I used to force myself to do it for the sake of taking the kids on holiday but now I honestly don’t think I could get on an aeroplane. It’s the only thing I have a totally irrational fear of. I’ve unpicked the reason and it’s that I have absolutely no control. I don’t particularly like being a passenger in a car either.

maddiemookins16mum · 30/04/2026 15:30

I used to love it. But since 9/11 I’ve become very nervous especially the take off and first 10 minutes. Once we’re up I’m fine. Landing no problem. It’s weird.

I was getting anxious about flying and then was at Stansted on 9/11 when the news was coming in and people were watching the towers coming down on widescreens while waiting for their flights. Full on anxiety after that, associating flying with risk of death. Only remedied by a lot of mindfulness and working through this bookwww.worldofbooks.com/en-gb/products/flying-with-confidence-book-patricia-furness-smith-9780091947859#9789704110353

Farr85 · 30/04/2026 20:55

Certain airlines generally have a smoother take off and landing. I avoid Ryanair like the plague! Im still a nervous wreck but im better than I used to be. I dont to pass on the fear to my kids. So think internal panic and profusely sweating

Waitingfordoggo · 30/04/2026 21:01

I hate it. Intrusive thoughts make it a very frightening experience for me.

Yes, I know it’s safer than being in a car and that the crew all want to get home safely. Makes no difference to my fear unfortunately because it isn’t rational. 🫤

singthing · 30/04/2026 21:06

I adore flying. Every second of it, take off, being up above the clouds, landing. I get excited as soon as I can see the airport en route.

Flying excites and and amazes and exhilarates me, even after 40+ years of doing it. I very much treat it as part of the trip and something to enjoy, rather than the disdainful "flying bus" attitude (which I don't think helps anyone).

But if I hated it as much as some people on this thread do, I would use alternative transport and visit other places in this beautiful world, not martyr myself into it and then sit there shitting myself the whole time.

notanothernamechangemother · 30/04/2026 21:24

I don't mind flying. I'm not keen on airports and all the faff that entails.

My ds is training to be a commercial pilot. The amount of training/exams and medical exams they have makes me feel much safer in the air, knowing how well trained they are.

SallyAnnDrivesACar · 30/04/2026 21:28

I hate the thought of it so much I haven't flown since I was about 7 years old. I'm now in my 50's.
Its bus, train or cruise ships.

Autumngirl5 · 30/04/2026 21:30

I hate flying and not sure I can put myself through it again. I’m looking into travelling around Europe by train. So much more relaxing.

Appleski · 30/04/2026 21:31

I really don't like it I haven't flown in almost 20 years now. I probably will at some point but I prefer to avoid it if I can.

ihearyoucalling · 30/04/2026 21:36

I hate it too. It ruins every holiday for me as I'm always thinking about having to get back on the plane to get back. Wine doesn't do it for me, I have had diazepam before many years ago but they won't prescribe it for flying now. The more I do the better I get though, to some extent. I used to be a hyperventilating crying mess and my heart would race for the whole time but I can manage the panic a bit better now as I've got used to the bumps and turns a bit more.

Sandrine1982 · 30/04/2026 21:38

Hate flying, but addicted to travel. I wish there was a train all the way to Africa or Central America 😥

bumblingbovine49 · 30/04/2026 21:48

Badbadbunny · 30/04/2026 15:51

There are only two things I hate about flying.

Firstly, the hell hole known as Manchester Airport. Utterly miserable staff at every turn. Unfortunately it's our closest, but I still try to find alternative flights from Liverpool, Leeds or even Newcastle and happy to put up with longer distance and more cost to avoid Manchester.

Secondly, I hate the way people are so jam packed into planes. I'd happily pay more for wider seats, longer leg room, etc. Fewer people on planes would also mean shorter queues for loos, quicker serving time for meals, shorter queues checking boarding passes, etc. When possible and feasible, I've happily paid more for flight operators who have "premium economy" or a few times even for business class. Doesn't shorten the queues to get on/off, but at least you're not sat on someone's knee and don't have someone snoring in your ear. Not bothered about the "frills" such as better meals or other gimmicks, I just want my own space!

Edited

I too want the extra space. So much so that I just wont fly on a flight over 4 hours on anything other than premium economy any more . It has reduced the number of flights I can take in a year due to cost but it is worth it

I dont have any fear of flying though . In fact I quite enjoy the actual flight on a long haul day flight if I have a premium economy aisle seat.

For me it is all about comfort. So I hate the queuing and hassle at the airport and being treated like cattle, and I hate the lack of space on the flight and having to ask someone to move so I can use the loo etc.

localnotail · 30/04/2026 21:49

I absolutely HATE flying... What helps me:

  1. Lovefly. They are amazing, really helped me - I still listen to their podcasts. I done their course twice.
  2. Medication. Beta blockers or Diazepam.
  3. Alcohol (not too much though) and deffo not mixed with neds
  4. Being tired when flying so you fall asleep (works for me on long haul flights, sometimes I'm so tired I dont have the energy to fear)
fundamentallyauthentic · 30/04/2026 21:58

I feel more vulnerable on a plane than I do in any other form of travel. Not sure why since it’s still the safest way to travel - might be because I do it so rarely (twice a year). I try to divert my thoughts into becoming immersed in podcasts or music I listen to. Booking the window seat for the short solo flights I go on also helps me feel a bit safer.

Shinyhappyapple · 30/04/2026 23:04

I’m not keen, but I like my holidays. Like a few others on this thread I take a diazepam. One 2 mg tablet does the trick for me now, just takes the edge off. I don’t drink alcohol when flying. I wouldn’t want to fly more than 3-4 hours though, but I’m fine with that.

PyongyangKipperbang · Yesterday 04:04

Loathe it.

The holiday would have to be spectacular to make it worth it.

For me it's control, I don't feel safe if I am not in charge, same reason I am a terrible car passenger!

abracadabra1980 · Yesterday 04:37

I avoid it as much as possible. I also am gobsmacked that my new GP has told me in no uncertain terms that she can not prescribe diazepam under any circumstances due to new guidelines, particularly flying is flying is a 'choice'. No it's fucking not for many of us, it was also a lifesaver for my back spasms. 5mg was enough to calm me perfectly. I'm so angry about this as it was the only thing that got me on a plane with my kids and still is. What is the point of a drug being 'available' but then not allowing the people who need it, to use it. Yes it's addictive-but in 40 years that I've used it on a careful, ad-hoc basis, and I have not had so much as a hint of addiction. I had to change GP's because of a house move-precious GP prescribed as and when I needed. Anyone else experiencing this 'ban'?
