Cala D’or, Playa de las Americas or Alcudia?

Daisychain1013 · 26/04/2026 18:52

We’re going away in August with ds (10).

We love Majorca and have been to Puerto Pollensa and Playa de Muro several times.

Thinking of going to Cala D’or this time round but we have seen a hotel in Playa de las Americas that looks great for the money. But is the area as bad as people say?

Another option is Alcudia which of course is on the same stretch as we’ve been before, might it be a bit samey though?

If anyone has been to these resorts and can tell me the good the bad and the ugly?

Tia

Yes. Cala d’or is a million times nicer. I’m not keen on alcudia but if you like that you might like las americas if you stay on the quieter end but it’s not as nice as Majorca.

Bjorkdidit · 26/04/2026 19:01

You do know that Playa de las Americas is in Tenerife?

In Mallorca we like Paguera or if you want something quiet and upmarket, Camp de Mar.

Paguera is quite small, has 3 lovely beaches and a regular bus service to Palma.

Nearly everyone who goes there are Germans, mostly families and older couples, but you can still get good Spanish food.

Daisychain1013 · 26/04/2026 19:01

I’ve never actually been to Alcudia. Puerto Pollensa is lovely but quite pricey, I’m a bit worried about Alcudia and Playa Americas being loud/tacky.

I’m not going to pretend we are going on holiday purely for the Spanish Culture but also don’t want to be in an area that’s purely fry ups with a pint and drunken Brits 🤣

Depends what type of holiday you want. For me id personally choose cala D'or

Yes yes I do know it’s Tenerife 🤣

It was a bit of a wildcard as we found a hotel that looked very modern and it was pretty cheap.

I’ve never been to Tenerife but I have been to Fuerteventura and Lanzarote and I wasn’t keen.

Totally different feel to places I’ve been in Majorca or let’s say some of the Greek Islands.

Yes Playa de las Americas is pretty tacky. Very ‘Brits abroad’ with lots of English/Irish pubs, cafes serving English breakfasts etc. We went to Costa Adeje last year which was meant to be less like that but isn’t really tbh. We stayed at a really nice hotel full board though so we didn’t really need to leave it so depends if you are looking to do that or eat out etc.

Bjorkdidit · 26/04/2026 19:25

Lanzarote is pretty nice if you avoid Costa Teguise or anywhere Puerto del Carmen east of Playa Chica.

No high rise and you can see the volcano park and all the Cesar Manrique legacy stuff. If you want to stay somewhere quiet but a bit touristy, Playa Blanca is nice enough.

But all the little coves in Cala DOr are so stunningly beautiful, you can forgive the odd uncultured British tourist.

OhCobblers · 26/04/2026 19:26

Don’t go to Alcudia!

TheCurious0range · 26/04/2026 19:28

The only time I've been to play de las Americas was on a hen party, it was very Brits abroad.
Of the canaries I prefer Lanzarote play blanca it at a push Puerto del Carmen matagorda end as it's much quieter. We always hire a car and Lanzarote is an easy drive

hahabahbag · 26/04/2026 19:28

I liked Tenerife but i wasn’t travelling with children and we stayed to the north of playa des Americas in Costa Adeja, but took the bus to the town in the daytime. We avoided the Brits abroad places and found plenty of Spanish restaurants

Daisychain1013 · 26/04/2026 19:29

Thank you.

What I probably should have said is this. The past few years we’ve been to some really lovely all inclusive’s with lots going on for children. This year our budget is much lower.

The Spring Hotel Bitacora in Tenerife has water slides, entertainment and a big children’s playground, and it’s cheap!

In Cala D’or we’d be looking at somewhere like Inturotel Cala Azul which looks lovely but quite basic and I’m worried it might be a bit boring for ds.

Although we could do daytrips to a waterpark.

I took my DS to Cala D’Or when he was about 3. I always said I’d love to go back there. Loved it!! Hotel was right on the lovely beach and all the amenities were close by. He’s 21 this year so it definitely has a soft spot in my heart ❤️

If you didn't like Lanzarote or fuerte Ventura you won't like Tenerife.
I love the Greek islands, we are going to Crete this summer, we went to Lanzarote half term as a cheap deal came up and we wanted to relax and ds wanted to see the volcano. The canaries and the greek islands are very very different

VividDeer · 26/04/2026 19:31

Playa DA wasn't my thing at all.
Cala D'or nice, but beaches are small and crowded.
What about Greece or Turkey?

Daisychain1013 · 26/04/2026 19:34

Have never been to Turkey.

Loved all the Greek Islands I’ve visited, but again, it’s quite pricey for go somewhere with lots of extras.

I’m not against a quiet holiday but want to give ds the best holiday we can.

I got bitted to shreds by mosquitoes in Alcudia, there is a massive inland lake behind the resort where they breed. The canaries are a very different landscape to the Balearics but there are some lovely places (Especially in Lanzarote as others have said) and it's generally pretty good value

TheToteBagLady · 26/04/2026 20:11

We’ve also been to Puerto Pollensa quite a few times. It’s one of our favourite places to go on holiday.

We went on a day trip to Cala D’Or once, and I remember feeling a bit underwhelmed. The streets were just the usual tourist tat shops, (which my teens love) and the beaches/coves were small and absolutely packed.
I’m not sure what I was expecting, but I remember feeling relived that we weren’t staying there.

Alcudia is fine for a day trip, but again, I wouldn’t want to stay there.

What about Soller or Port de Soller? It’s so beautiful there, but I’m not sure of any accomodation or if your DS would like it. It’s so hard to beat PP!

user2848502016 · 26/04/2026 20:57

We were near Alcudia and went to visit but thought it was a bit shabby. Cala d’or is nicer.
Playa de las Americas is a large and busy resort, fine if you like that sort of thing but there are much nicer resorts in Tenerife

CarrieAnnQ · 26/04/2026 21:04

I've stayed at BitaCora a few years ago with my kids when they were similar ages and really enjoyed it, the hotel is lovely, food was nice, there's a free shuttle bus that takes you to Siam Park which is fantastic, my kids loved it.
Yes the resort is a bit tacky in places but it's not that bad, there's good and bad everywhere.

Clearinguptheclutter · 26/04/2026 21:06

I went to Alcudia in the late 1990s and there is a reason I’ve never been back. Dead tacky.

Cala dor is the nicest by far - and Is a mix of the fry up and lager holidaymaker mixed in with the tapas crowd - like another poster I tend to go to paguera, , andratx, camp de mar, sant elm, illetas side because I like going into Palma a fair bit but if you aren’t bothered about that then Cala dor is lovely

TheFairyCaravan · 26/04/2026 21:11

We loved Cala D’Or when our children were smaller. We very often stayed in the Cala D’Or Playa Apartments and latterly, when we went back when we only took DS2 (because DS1 didn’t want to come) we stayed at the Inturotel Esmeralda Garden. The apartments at the Esmeralda Garden were basic but they were clean, centrally located and had everything you need.

Another option for you might be Menorca @Daisychain1013 . We much prefer it to Majorca. All the beaches are really, really safe and the whole island is geared up for families.

NorthernStar96 · Yesterday 07:49

Small point, but seems most on this thread slating Alcudia have only actually been to Port d'Alcudia and the stretch down to Can Picafort.

Alcudia itself is a walled old town with lots of squares and lanes, hosting Spanish and Italian restaurants, and small boutiques, galleries etc.

Only a 10 minute bus ride away if you can be bothered to get off your sun bed, lilo etc.

VividDeer · Yesterday 07:57

I think you should give Playa des America's a miss definitely.
