Cala D’or, Playa de las Americas or Alcudia?

We’re going away in August with ds (10).

We love Majorca and have been to Puerto Pollensa and Playa de Muro several times.

Thinking of going to Cala D’or this time round but we have seen a hotel in Playa de las Americas that looks great for the money. But is the area as bad as people say?

Another option is Alcudia which of course is on the same stretch as we’ve been before, might it be a bit samey though?

If anyone has been to these resorts and can tell me the good the bad and the ugly?

Tia

Cala D’or is small coves, so they get very busy, unless you’re there early it’s hard to get a spot by the sea, you can end up way back in the cove, which makes supervising children harder if they want to play by the sea. They’re beautiful but rammed. Because of the geography, the restaurants / busy area is inland so lacks any views, it’s basically a lot of crisscrossing roads with restaurants and bars. There’s a mini golf and some small go karting places, we did a boat trip, but also had a hire car so visited some other beaches and areas.

Alcudia is tourist central but has a long stretch of beach, not sure how busy it gets as we stayed further down in playa de Moro. Alcudia old town is gorgeous for a stroll around, and you can get the bus to pollensa if you want as well.

Place marking to read for friend looking for holiday

Turkey is beautiful. I wouldn't be put off by Iran its a massive country. Its very very hot, otherwise I'd go every summer.

Lottapianos · 28/04/2026 08:32

We're going to Cala d'Or next month so reading with interest. Never been to Majorca before, and chose this area because we heard it's laid back and pretty, and doesn't tend to attract party people! Great to hear that there's lots to do. The beaches shouldn't be too rammed in mid May hopefully 🤞

Parts of turkey are stunning. I’d recommend around Sarigerme or Dalyan for smaller more traditional resorts in lush green. We visited turtle bay and mud baths which was fab.

Thank you.

What I probably should have said is this. The past few years we’ve been to some really lovely all inclusive’s with lots going on for children. This year our budget is much lower.

The Spring Hotel Bitacora in Tenerife has water slides, entertainment and a big children’s playground, and it’s cheap!

In Cala D’or we’d be looking at somewhere like Inturotel Cala Azul which looks lovely but quite basic and I’m worried it might be a bit boring for ds.

Although we could do daytrips to a waterpark.

This hotel is great - would definitely recommend - super clean, large rooms, good facilities for kids. Walkable to beach and transport to an excellent waterpark. I think there is more to do here than in Cala Dor

theres also good trips in Tenerife, can go to Loro Parque, Mount Tiede

Timetakesacigarette · 28/04/2026 12:01

Playa de las Americas in Tenerife is horrible.

Alcudia in Majorca is also touristy but not as dense and has a beautiful beach with an old town nearby. I was suprised to find a really nice Pintxos cafe in the old centre. It’s a short bus ride ride from Puerto Pollensa and Pollensa old town and you can travel on to Palma. There are some upmarket restaurants and hotels starting to emerge in Alcudia so there are things to do for all budgets and there is the water park nearby also.

Cala D’Or is similar to Alcudia.

I like Cala dor and can see why it suits a lot of people wanting a ‘mid ground’ like Puerto pollensa it's lively but attractive - it’s set around several different coves, upside is pretty, downside is it gets packed as unlike Puerto pollensa doesn’t have miles of flat coastline or a prom as such . For me the downside is it’s not handy for nipping to Palma which I like to do ( but we no longer have kids around) and it’s bit on its own unless you have a car-so I think for most would be a very resort based holiday -I think you will be fine in May , worth moving round a bit to different coves, Cala Gran is the one in the middle but quite a few others on edge - lots of life around Cala Egos and Porto Petro and Porto colom ( both on bus) are very nice attractive old style villages/towns

Lottapianos · 28/04/2026 13:24

Thanks so much @Crikeyalmighty , that's really helpful ❤️ Will definitely take a bus trip or two!

unsevered67 · 28/04/2026 13:56

I’ve never been to Cala dor. I’ve had loads of holidays in old town Pollensa which I love. Old town Alcudia is lovely but the bit where all the hotels are is very tacky, as is Playa de las Americas .
We now go to Kefalonia which is beautiful and cheaper than Majorca when you get there.

I went then and they were just perfect. However I can imagine they'd be rammed in August. Its just a different feel to a wider and shorter beach.

Honestly we are fussy gits- we like upmarket resorts , pretty but with a bit of life and we thought it totally fine - a few rowdy places in Cala d’or , but it’s not magalluf and to be honest even at 64 I do like a bit of life or a bit of a boogie !! I missed off Cala Ferrera for you - that’s also pretty close and gorgeous - reminded me of a Norwegian fjord - lots of upmarket restaurants and bars there . Theres also a load of great Facebook pages dedicated to Cala d’or - it’s worth following them and reading previous posts for tips and pointers!! You can also then ask any questions on it - very nice helpful people I’ve noticed on them

CalaD’Or was where we took our children for many years and it is still my happy place. We went there recently with our granddaughter and she loved it . We really want to go again sometime this year . Look on you tube for the fruit man …Granddaughter absolutely loved him and gave him all of her dummies when she was three.
We stayed at CalaFerrera

Lottapianos · 28/04/2026 19:56

You're a star @Crikeyalmighty - the FB groups is a great shout 👍

@nopeandnopeandnope, that's adorable about the dummies and the fruit man 😁

I live in Mallorca near pollenca and have done for several years. Alcudia is actually quite nice, especially the old town but even the beach/tourist areas are fine. I often go to muro beach in the weekends - you just have to find the quiet bits. Cala d’or is lovely but definitely too touristy for me. Port de pollenca is my stamping ground so I’m quite happy if none of you want to come here as it makes it easier for us residents to park in summer!

localnotail · 28/04/2026 20:39

I've been to Cala d'Or - dont know about other places... Its a sort of upmarket British holiday place, nowhere near as bad as Tenerife but still kind of boring.

Ooh I’m jealous - love it there

@Lottapianos actually the place i meant was Cala figuera - that’s a bit of a trip - best if you have a car as about 30 mins drive - Cala ferrera is actually one of Cala d’ors coves - a nice one , has the nice Barcelo hotel on the beach there

Ah, no car so will give that a miss, but will have plenty to keep us going 👍

We did a two centre holiday in Mallorca a few years back - Port de Soller and Port de Pollensa. Port de Soller was hands down our favourite as found restaurants etc. to be of a much much better standard.

Can recommend Esplendido Hotel, was ideal for our then 7 year old. Mr Poppy from the Navity films was also staying with his family at the time - poor man was very popular with the young guests!
