Where can we go long haul last two weeks of August?

Everywhere seems to be “monsoon season”.
we did Thailand gulf islands last August so keen to do somewhere different.
we have teens with us and want a mix of nice beach resorts and activities. Contemplated Vietnam but unsure on weather?

Central Vietnam
borneo
Bali

Forgottenmyphone · 24/01/2026 05:52

Another vote for Bali. It has some amazing beaches and lots to do.

MissingSockDetective · 24/01/2026 06:28

Mauritius was beautiful, we went in August several years ago.

ramonaquimby · 24/01/2026 06:30

Also Vietnam. Have been before last 2 weeks in August mostly hugging the coast. Lots to do for everyone.

Tpu · 24/01/2026 06:36

I really thought Bali was overrated.
what about the Northern part of South America or Central America?

curious79 · 24/01/2026 07:13

Palau if you love snorkelling and natural beauty
I’ve been to Vietnam in August - some real sporadic downpours but was still lovely. Compare that to Costa Rica where rainy season really did mean not a single day without rain - horrendous

Hurricane risk, would need to pick exactly where very carefully.

jetlag92 · 24/01/2026 08:07

Weather is good in Borneo at that time of year.
British Colombia

Vietnam is better at easter, especially if you want to do Halong Bay

Carmen866 · 24/01/2026 09:17

We’re going to South America this year with our 20 year old

Erin1975 · 24/01/2026 09:48

South Africa, Costa Rica, Namibia, Brazil, the world is your oyster. South East Asia may have monsoon season but the rest of the world doesn't.

littlefireseverywhere · 24/01/2026 16:19

Caribbean, island hopping. Belize, Honduras or Mexico?

Oopsadaisyetc · 24/01/2026 16:22

Brazil - amazing beaches, cities, wildlife, scenery, everything you need and a very distinct vibe.

Mistymagic77 · 24/01/2026 17:25

Been to Tanzania/zanzibar that time of year.

mambojambodothetango · 24/01/2026 17:38

Peru

Yeah if you're looking for beaches then our summer isn't the best time to travel long haul. I think most of the standard options are already covered but the Seychelles, Mauritius, Zanzibar, Bali and the east coast of Thailand/Malaysia/Vietnam are your best bets if you want to book a package holiday. To be honest we tend to travel long haul at October half term and Easter then stay in the UK/Europe in the summer.

It’s wet in Costa Rica in our summer. BA don’t even fly there at that time.

Canadian Maritimes - perfect 👌

VioletGoesVintage · 24/01/2026 20:50

We’re going to Canada - Vancouver Island. Not exactly beach resorts but loads to do and see. Whale watching, bears if we’re lucky, sea-kayaking….. However could definitely recommend the Qurimbas Archipelago in Mozambique in August. Most people do it as an add-on to a safari but I don’t see why you’d have to. Zanzibar is another option.

OhDear111 · 24/01/2026 22:29

@LoudSnoringDog South Africa works well then and you might see whales in Hermanus. We also took dc to Peru at that time with Families Worldwide. You can also look at Canada and Alaska. It’s really not monsoon everywhere!

ConvolutedCat · 24/01/2026 22:32

What are you looking for? I assume good weather isn’t the main factor, as you can easily get that in Europe in late August, in very nice places. A very different culture? Particular type of cuisine?

ColdWaterDipper · 24/01/2026 23:11

The Caribbean but out of the hurricane belt? Antigua, Barbados, curacao, Trinidad and Tobago? We’ve had amazing holidays in the Caribbean at that time of year. Also Bali and certain parts of Sri Lanka.

mathanxiety · 24/01/2026 23:14

East coast USA.
American schools go back in mid August, but it's still really hot. Accommodation is usually much easier to find than it is before schools go back.

crackersancheese · 25/01/2026 09:04

Sri lanka. Took our teens there in July and August. Fab trio , so much to see and do, plus gorgeous beaches. In the summer avoid the beaches in the south coast but the east coast and north is fine . Great cultural sights, mountains, wildlife, beaches. Very good value. Stunning. It was our 3rd trip

tonyhawks23 · 25/01/2026 09:07

South Africa and you can ski even.

XiCi · 25/01/2026 09:16

I suppose it depends on what you want to do. We went to South Africa last few weeks of August. It didn't rain and the weather was pleasant but definitely not sunbathing/beach weather if that's what the OP wants. There were activities we couldn't do. Its their Winter.
I love Bali and would choose there every time. Your other options for that time of year are Mauritius, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Costa Rica (pacific side only in Aug)
