Dengue fever was pretty hideous.

Sudden strike of a gastric bug at Disneyland or Universal, too much PTSD
to remember which….Literally projectile vomited on the star wars ride

summervile · 29/12/2025 17:29

Norovirus.

amiadickhead · 29/12/2025 17:50

Food poisoning from bad rice in Bahrain of all places, were on our way elsewhere and stopped there to visit family. Thought I was going to die, and actively wanted to die at some points.

DancingNotDrowning · 29/12/2025 17:52

Food poisoning in a very high end resort in middle of no where. I spent night vomiting in toilet whilst DH vomited in the sink next to me.

we had a 8mth old baby with us, resort called a dr out to us and I was given a drip in the room.

bloody awful

DS2 broke his leg on holiday in Cyprus when he was 5 or 6

Started with a sore throat a mere few hours after boarding a cruise ship. Managed to eat a tiny bit of food but felt progressively worse. By the time we were having the sail away party I was asleep on a bench. Completely missing the entire thing. Honestly just thought it was a mild cold and the sore throat would go within a day or so. By day 4 I was sick of being in agony each time I swallowed so took myself off to the onboard Dr who took one look at throat and diagnosed me with tonsillitis and a fever. 2 paracetamols and 4 antibiotics later I could finally start to enjoy myself. Cost me $197 for the medication, as we were floating in the middle of the Caribbean ocean at the time. Thankfully I was able to claim about £50 of that back on my insurance

Fractured finger slipping in a walkway over the beach.
perforated ear drum

Fell off the back of a scooter in Crete. Scrapped myself up pretty bad. I still have a few scars and there's still a few pieces of Greek gravel in me. Every so often one makes its way to the surface!

Anal fistula in Tenerife.

I thought they were exaggerating when they said it would need surgery - I was in theatre 6 hours after seeing my GP 4 hours after arriving in the UK!

falalalalaaaah · 29/12/2025 18:20

I went to Tenerife last year and it started on the plane out. The worst UTI I have ever had in my life. Agony, could barely walk it was so painful.
Paid for three separate doctors appointments because the first two didn’t get the antibiotics right. It lasted 9 days, seemed to clear up in the taxi back to the airport.

BaffledAndBemusedToo · 29/12/2025 18:20

Sounds pathetic, but breaking my toe by stubbing it on a rock on the first day there. Couldn’t walk generally, but also absolutely couldn’t go on the beach or in the sea because the sand creates an uneven surface with the toes around it and it put pressure on it. 🤪

As a kid we were camping somewhere in England (we’re from NE Scotland). I fell off a swing and the chains cracked my clavicle. It was just before I started high school so I turned up with my left arm in a sling and a great excuse not to do PE for the first few weeks.

An awful gallstone attack - a stone had got stuck in the neck of the gallbladder and the gallbladder had become infected so had to be removed- I have never known pain like it

Toothache in Cyprus, 30 odd years ago - day 3 of a 14 night stay. I wanted to come home but these were the days of set day flights where there was little/no option other than to travel back on the flight you came out on etc. In the end the lovely hotel receptionist booked me a dentist appointment. I was terrified. I ended up in a dentist surgery where another person was also being treated at the same time! He pulled it out. After that I just cried and shook for three hours like I was in mild shock. I felt fine 2 days later though.

My parents took my 4yo son and me on holiday to Italy a couple of years ago. My dad had a massive heart attack and died a slow painful death on the floor of the hotel. It was awful.

ByronKoala · 29/12/2025 19:17

Toothache in rural Australia!! Agony with no dentists for 100s of miles.

sprigatito · 29/12/2025 19:19

Sunstroke and third degree burns. I fell asleep on a beach in a swimsuit when I was 7. My dad had to cut holes in my t shirt for the massive yellow blisters to poke through. Never felt so ill in my life.

ParentingRollerCoaster · 29/12/2025 19:31

Stood on an urchin on the beach in Greece, had bumped into soon to be in laws while we were Island hopping .. spent the day picking spines out of my foot and had to borrow Future MILLS underwear... not sure which was worse...

Broke my back skiing. Am now a centimetre shorter than I used to be.

ChubbyPuffling · 29/12/2025 19:39

I fell down some stairs on a ferry boat, my mouth hit my knee and a front tooth snapped and embedded itself in my shattered kneecap. Went to emergency department at hospital and had about 20 student doctors come to look at the weird toothy knee lady. Took 4 years before I walked without a limp.

PortSalutPlease · 29/12/2025 19:41

Broke my foot on the first day of a hiking trip…..

Huge family reunion - we hired a big country house for 4 days, packed to the rafters with family members in every room, very little privacy. I was the only person who ordered the chicken in the restaurant on the first night. That did NOT end well…. Luckily our room was en-suite!! Missed the entire family reunion. It was the first time now-DH had met most of them.

I had a terrible kidney infection in Florida. I’d started with a niggling back pain a few days before we flew but I didn’t think much of it. Half way across the Atlantic I was so ill, shaking, vomiting and in agony. When we landed (in July) I was so cold I was wearing everyone’s jackets just to stop the shivering. I spent the first week there drifting in and out of consciousness and lost so much weight I couldn’t keep my shorts up.
