It's nuts, isn't it!? The state of that country now, I despair

My husband is a consultant for a company group and one task is organising two conferences a year, one normally in the states.
They run a poll two weeks ago about potential locations and the US came bottom because nobody wants to travel there anymore.

I certainly won’t be going whilst DT is in power.

LeonMccogh · 11/12/2025 07:57

Can the UK do the same and refuse anyone with any links to MAGA!? Hahaha imagine the wails of indignation!!! 😂😂

Kendodd · 11/12/2025 08:00

Can't see it happening tbh.
It'll completely kill their tourist industry and damage business travel because nobody will want to be bothered with it.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 11/12/2025 08:00

I'm sure I've written bad stuff about the orange so I'm not risking a holiday there till he is gone.

The border officers there will actually turn you away to as it happen to my mum 30 years ago as she had a moped conviction she forgot to declare on arrival that happened as a teen. She was 55!!!!

Dolphinnoises · 11/12/2025 08:02

This is why they go on and on about free speech in Europe. It’s to distract their population from the way they’re clamping down on free speech at home…

SirChenjins · 11/12/2025 08:02

Trump threatens lots of things - I wouldn't worry.

Statsquestion1 · 11/12/2025 08:03

I don’t have social media, so how would they manage that I wonder?…

Ummm, you have a mumsnet account.

Jijithecat · 11/12/2025 08:07

It's unworkable. No one's going to declare incriminating accounts and even if you do have them you could just change privacy settings.
The social media companies won't be helping them out any time soon.

notallthosewhotravelarelost · 11/12/2025 08:17

They are also suggesting that you will be required to submit your DNA. How long before trump sells this to the highest bidder?

There are so many reasons this is a terrible idea.

But how did they know about the moped conviction, they dont have access to uk police records surely?

I think they turned away a Norwegian student because he had posted a funny meme about Vance months ago. This isn’t really news, it’s already happening.

How did they know that? 30 years ago the internet was it its infancy so there would have been no online access to anything.

Greenwitchart · 11/12/2025 10:32

I lived in the USA in the 90s and I have always been very fond of the country.

But I would never travel there as long as Trump is president.

Absolutely didn’t happen. I went to US 30 years ago and it was pre internet, you just filled out a form on the plane shortly before landing and it was mostly just to clarify where you were staying and how long for.

RyanFudgingMurphy · 11/12/2025 10:40

I've said plenty about the Cheesy Wotsit online which is not flattering. JDV too. Thankfully I have no criminal record and also no current desire to visit the USA. Canada sounds much more inviting.

FrizzyFrizbee · 11/12/2025 11:23

I have checked. I don’t see how it can go ahead (at least without some form of modification) because not everyone has social media accounts, but it is intended to prevent terrorists entering the country.

It states “3. Mandatory Social Media: In order to comply with the January 2025 Executive Order 14161 (Protecting the United States From Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats), CBP is adding social media as a mandatory data element for an ESTA application. The data element will require ESTA applicants to provide their social media from the last 5 years”.

But when you look at EO 14161, this is about protecting US Citizens from foreign terrorists. Presumably they are looking at countries like the UK, and thinking that greater investigation is needed.

I mean facebook, TikTok etc, this is an anonymous forum.

MsOtisReflects · 11/12/2025 12:25

I have been wondering whether AI could simply extract and compile all our individual usernames, or whether it would be a matter of MNHQ giving them up to US security services?

I have relatives in the US, and vague professional interests there - but nothing would make me travel there for the foreseeable future.

Chewbecca · 11/12/2025 12:30

You already have to declare social media accounts on your ESTA application, it's a field that's been there a long time.
