Just that! I am visiting my son in Dubai in January and have been upgraded. I am travelling on my own. Any tips on do's and don't in Business? I'm a bit nervous 😓 and a lovely surprise for my retirement ❤️

Have you ever flown Business Class?

It absolutely isn't "just a seat on the plane - although I agree with your last point, unlike @NoOneToCallWhenThePlaneLands who seems to be existing in some sort of weird, parallel universe.

From the perspective of the OP who was worrying about behavior and dos and don'ts, it IS just another seat.

But yes. Its a much nicer seat on a plane. But still just a seat.

Linenpickle · 16/10/2025 19:22

And a nicer amenity kit!!

coxesorangepippin · 16/10/2025 19:24

Is this a problem

Comedycook · 16/10/2025 19:27

Ive only flown business class once but it was probably the best seven hours of my life 😂

Comedycook · 16/10/2025 19:29

The joy of being on a plane is partly due to not having to do anything else and not feeling guilty about not doing anything else.

Load nonsense. Ex emirates first class hostie here!

Dress however you want to, relax, and enjoy. Eat as much or as little as you want, don't forget to open all the cabinets in your suite, as there are hidden help yourself bars and snack boxes for you. The crew will definitely look after you, and you can always ask for more of anything if you need it.

Totally agree. (Another first class hostie here). I loved seeing someone upgraded who really enjoyed/appreciated it. Just be polite to the crew (and other passengers) and ask them if you can’t work out something. Nobody remotely notices your hand luggage (unless it’s far too big 😡) and people wear all kinds of things. Have fun!

Exactly. The OP is travelling on her own to go and visit her son. It will be great fun. She’s not some cokehead throwing drinks and gunning for the mile high club!

Lucky you! I hope you enjoy every expensive minute.

DH and I are going long haul at end of the year; booked 2 seats, one Business for me (!) and one premium economy for him (!) we will swap on the return flight .

I am wondering about swapping seats mid flight to allow the other to lie flat and sleep....I am thinking it is not OK as seats are allocated to just one specific passenger..also its disruptive to be swapping mid flight and disturbing those around you...DH disagrees...but I am sure I am correct.

Any views anyone?

PS Sorry to 'highjack' your post OP!!!!

It does happen where people swap half way. Best to just ask the crew and check at the start of the flight. The situation that we really discouraged/disliked was when the passenger from the lower class cabin expects to keep nipping back and forth through the curtain and chatting to their friend.

Helpfullright · 16/10/2025 19:39

Oh lord I would give the other poster a heart attack! I get on, eat and then put my pj’s on! I go straight to work as I get off trust me I’m getting comfy!

friedaddedchilli · 16/10/2025 19:39

Just to underline - the lounge is 50% of the experience. Don't be tempted to skimp on that. Get there at the earliest moment and do all the stuff.

mine too!
About 12 years I was on my annual solo visit to New York to visit son no 2. At Heathrow I was approached by an assistant who asked if I was travelling alone, I was upgraded from the cheapest seat to business class. With china plates etc.
Unfortunately it was an 8 hour daytime flight so although I ( obviously) did try out the lie flat seat I didn’t actually go to sleep!
Forever hoping it will happen one day on my annual 14 hr Singapore flight to visit son no1! Would def use the seat/bed on that trip, it’s getting almost unbearable in economy at my great age of 69!

GlassofRosePorfavor · 16/10/2025 19:47

I was on an a380 bizzy flight yesterday back from Dubai! Try the champagne cocktails they are fab.

Dress nicely - make sure you look tidy. Linen over leggings, for example.

Make sure your luggage isn’t tatty and is neat, make sure you can lift your bag into the overhead locker yourself.

Make sure you take everything you need and don’t beam with excitement when they offer you a drink. Just accept it and thank them.

Be lowkey. Don’t overindulge. This is just a normal experience for everyone around you. Make sure you have headphones and you’re quite etc.

Rubbish absolute rubbish. When we were en route to Thailand and were in the bar on the plane there was an older couple saying how excited they were, the cabin crew were genuinely thrilled for them. I’d say the cabin was half full of regular travellers half full of thrilled people treating themselves and telling the cabin crew.

op best thing I did was get a cup of tea and it came in a mug . That was after a few glasses of champagne.

Business isn’t the same as economy. If she wants to fit in she’ll want to dress nicely and behave like everyone else will.

DH and I flew first class from Bombay to Singapore once (honestly the only time ever that a flight has been too short for my liking). My last clean t-shirt had a curry stain on the front and DH's clothes were incredibly crumpled, nobody cared.

This has got to be a joke 😀

With regard 'dress nicely' I remember reading in the 90s the Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow rocked up for their first class flights from London to Los Angeles and the staff thought a couple of tramps had showed up. Apparently staff were checking the guidelines to see if there's a minimum dress code on the plane.

Bollocks. Business Class dress for comfort the same as Economy and First Class. If they're suited and booted it's because they are flying for work and someone's arsed up their schedule and booked them a meeting straight after landing, or because they don't normally fly much and someone's given them duff advice.
That said, I'd avoid pyjamas unless you're First Class.

lemonraspberry · 16/10/2025 21:14

Enjoy the extra space. One of the other nice bits about business class is the lounge beforehand- just relax and enjoy the wait beforehand.

Kendodd · 16/10/2025 21:16

I also read in John Simpson's autobiography that he was reporting for the BBC embedded for weeks with tribal fighters in Afghanistan, unable to properly wash. The BBC called him back to London, and he travelled overland to Pakistan and straight to the airport and into his business class seat still in the clothes he'd been wearing for a week. The business man sat next to him immediately pressed the call button and asked the flight attendant if he could change seats.

I don't think they give out those free pajamas anymore in first class? I haven't seen them for years.

thehugsy · 16/10/2025 21:24

wear What you want, you don’t need to dress smart. I’ve flown bc a few times and dress for comfort.
is it the A380 you are going on? Enjoy the bar if it is.
the only time I heard about dressing smart was if you were on staff travel hoping for an upgrade at check in

SmugglersHaunt · 16/10/2025 21:24

I’d recommend watching “Bridesmaids” for tips on what not to do

Chinsupmeloves · 16/10/2025 21:25

Wow that's brilliant! 👌
Just be yourself and if you want to clap and get excited about the hot towels do it, I would!

Not that I've been first class but enjoy the luxury and be nice. Xxx

Just sit and let yourself be waited on hand and foot. Bliss!
