Booked today.. flying out tomorrow.
Shortest time before this was 5 days.
( retired no commitments). Was in Greece 3 weeks ago.
Just need to get out of this awful weather.. so popping off to Cyprus tomorrow.
I am lucky we can do this often ( average 8 times a year .. just SC in a villa or apartment for a week). The sun to me is better than any medication for my poorly bones and muscles..( Osteoarthritis/ Fibromyalgia/ Cervical spondylosis radiculopathy and stenosis. ). Got two major operations coming up.. so won't beable to just jet off after for a while). The price of the flight was less than a meal out for two.. £45 out... 47 ret.

Summer of 2019, booked an Airbnb and flights to Venice about seven or eight o’clock in the evening and left for the airport about 7 am next morning. Utterly lovely holiday.

TakeMe2Insanity · 03/10/2025 17:57

My mum would always do this!

MyElatedUmberFinch · 03/10/2025 18:02

I booked to go to Egypt on my own on 30th August and went on 31st.

I hope you have a fab time.

Rainbowdays123 · 03/10/2025 18:05

Whereas when I was looking to book flights to Cyprus for October half term they were coming in at £800 per head! Oh to be retired 😭😢

Coffeeishot · 03/10/2025 18:06

Oh at least a month we booked a may and went to mallorca June the day our schools broke up. !

Have a lovely time Op im also going on holiday tomorrow (spain) but it is getting a bit blowy so hopefully our flight isn't delayed!

Bjorkdidit · 03/10/2025 18:31

Not quite that fast but good luck with the flight, there will be lots of delays and cancellations over the next 24 hours due to the storm.

I once booked with 2 days notice because we were due to travel with Monarch when they went bust. I'm glad I had the time and foresight to get on and book new flights while they were announcing it on the news as a few hours later return flights to Mallorca on the day we wanted to travel were over £1k pp whereas I got them for about £200 each.

Not quite in the same league, but late DH & I booked a 2 month round-the-world trip with c.20 destinations 6 days before we went !

Actually that’s pretty hardcore. Anyone can book a last minute break to Europe but 2 months off somewhere …impressed

I am impressed and how adventurous this is.

All I can say is, I better not be one of these unlucky few who’ve worked all their lives but pops their clogs just after retirement! I have a healthy projected private pension and love the idea of just jetting off on a whim! Last had a holiday 10 years ago but enjoy learning where others are off to.

bloodredfeaturewall · 03/10/2025 19:54

immediately
back in the day where you could just rock up at the airport at the last minute desk and could say that you have 5 days and 200€ where can I go?

crete 4* was awsome

I know someone that happened to, worked hard, built up several businesses, retired with a shed load of money and then suddenly died. You never know what’s in store so I book the holidays now. I’m not waiting for retirement!

We were away in our campervan on the south coast in August. It rained and rained, so we came home, collected our passports and took the next ferry from Dover.

Growlybear83 · 03/10/2025 20:43

We always used to book the day before and we got some wonderful bargains.

TeamGeriatric · 03/10/2025 21:55

On 15th April this year, I booked to go to Geneva flying on 17th April, this was 49 hours before our flight, but going 'somewhere' had been discussed for while, it wasn't entirely spur of the moment. This is probably why I was shocked at the prices of food and trains, I was totally under prepared.

Crushed23 · 03/10/2025 22:08

For flights I think 1 or 2 days before. For accommodation, I’ve booked on the day many, many times, usually on longer, multi-destination travel (backpacking, interrailing).

winnieanddaisy · 03/10/2025 22:17

My daughter got married in 2001. The following day (Sunday) they went on teletext and booked a two week honeymoon to Dominican Republic and flew out the following morning. Less than £1000 for both of them on n a 4 star all inclusive hotel .

tobee · 03/10/2025 22:26

A few months ago Dh and I went to Berlin for the weekend booking about 4 days beforehand because the weather looked good.

TheSaltedCaramelPath · 03/10/2025 22:30

Booked at 6 p.m. and turned up for checkin at 6 a.m. 12 hours later, back in May this year.
(This after being refused boarding during total chaos and electrical outage at Stansted a day earlier resulting in a missed holiday).

Springflowersyay · 03/10/2025 22:31

Got to the airport and booked a flight that was available. Booked the accommodation while in the air a couple of hours from landing using plane WiFi.

Florencesndzebedee · 03/10/2025 22:31

Hope you have a great time. Would love to know where you got your travel insurance with your medical history if you don’t mind saying?

Sienna61 · 03/10/2025 22:38

I decided to go to Berlin for the Euros final at about 8pm in the evening and then flew out 12 hours later.

I did similar for Ukraine when England played Italy in Kiev. I also booked that the day before I went.

Tabletable · 03/10/2025 22:51

Nine hours and packed the whole family and sorted pet care. Covid times and an ‘air bridge’ opened up.

Hi.
From here.
I get it annual .. works out cheaper.
I never ever miss any of my diagnosis off.. even migrains and acid reflux.. all on there.. everything thats in my NHS medical notes.. or it will become void.
Once in Lanzarote all they wanted was my EHIC card.. and l got excellent treatment for a torn ligament.. but l still had the insurance policy.
