Isle of Mull best things to do in autumn?

Has anyone been to mull? This is our first trip we have 3 nights and 2 full days. I am very excited. Trying to decide between Staffa boat trip or just a nature watching trip from Tobermory. Also any other must sees?

Calgary bay is beautiful if you have time
to drive round. Also recommend the pony trekking if you’re into horses at all, lovely highland ponies. There are 2 short walks that are nice, one from mishnish end of Tobermory goes out to the lighthouse or there’s another from behind the harbour that goes out to a waterfall and aros park which is lovely too. If you’ve got kids there’s a cool little aquarium in the harbour (not massively exciting but it’s like £3 entry lol)
Are you staying in Tobermory or elsewhere?

Mullmusings · 02/10/2025 17:42

Thank you. We are staying in the south of the island

Day trip to Iona to see the church and monastery! Very beautiful place.

unsevered67 · 02/10/2025 17:50

Definitely go to Iona . It’s lovely. The trip to Staffa and Fingals cave is amazing but it will be weather dependant.

Mullmusings · 02/10/2025 17:52

Ok thanks. Will definitely do the trip to iona

Scuba diving. There are some good wrecks, and a pinnacle or two.

Funnily enough, I am currently wearing the sweatshirt I bought at Lochaline Dive Centre. I don't know if that is still there though.

Don’t want to be a killjoy but Mull is the worst place I’ve ever been. We were on holiday in Oban and went for the day, the ferry doesn’t go to Tobermory, so there was an endless bus journey through horrible council estates and barren wilderness. Tobermory had very little to offer, bear in mind this was mid July high season. Couldn’t wait to get off it.

Get on a boat and look for eagles, hang around coves and find some otters.

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/10/2025 18:01

A spa day at the Mull and Iona Spa Hotel at Craignure.
Go over to Iona and see the Abbey. (Go as a foot passenger).
Go otter spotting. We saw them near Salen on our last trip.
Visit McGoghans or the Mishnish (I've been pished in the Mish many times) for food and drink.
Take a trip to Calgary Bay.

The bus journey from Craignure to Tobermory isn’t the best. But that’s a tiny part of Mull. Tobermory is ok, but not a place you would spend a lot of time in. We stayed for a week near Fionnport. Some of the scenery is stunning and we loved it .Iona and Fingals cave were both places I’m very glad that I’ve seen.
I think it’s very unfair to write off the whole island after such a limited experience.

Fair play, it was just incredibly disappointing and we were having such a great time in Oban that we wished we hadn’t bothered.

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/10/2025 18:20

There is a ferry from Kilchoan that goes to Tobermory and another goes from Lochaline to Fishnish (midway between Craignure and Tobermory).
On/around Mull I've seen seals, eagles, basking sharks and deer (the latter were blocking the road!).
I might be biased but we have family on Mull. For us the 500 mile road trip and sea crossing. Is worth it.

Isle of mull cheese shop has a beautiful cafe, and delicious toasties (of course) and soups. Ideal autumn food!

There isn't a huge amount to do in Oban, it's quite a small town. If you only have an afternoon I would walk up to McCaigs tower, have some lunch from the Seafood Hut and either visit the distillery or grab drinks at one of the pubs that overlooks the harbour.

If you have a full day then maybe visit Kerrera but you will need more than an afternoon.

wizzbitt · 02/10/2025 20:19

Definitely get some fish and chips in Oban.
we stayed on Mull two Easters ago. Camping. That was an experience. Luckily the weather was on our side but it was so windy! We had to put DS who was 10 at the time inside the tent when we were packing away to keep it grounded 😂
Like Pp have already said Iona is a lovely day out.
Bear in mind windy weather will stop ferry crossings. We found out the hard way when we were stuck on the Isle of Coll but that’s another thread 😂🤦🏿‍♀️

Love Mull, it's got a bit of everything!

Presume you're going in the summer, I'd recommend a boat trip to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles (puffins, dolphins, whales), a day on Iona, Isle of Mull Cheese, great walks and lots of amazing places to eat (Google Mull and iona food trail).

Book your ferries as soon as they open for bookings, and your accommodation now.

We visit a lot, it's really lovely in May and September (outwith school holidays). There's heaps of Insta accounts (travel bloggers and local businesses) to give you an idea of what its like.

Everything is on the seafront, if you like seafood there’s a stall along by the train station that sells all the fresh catches for very reasonable prices. Some lovely restaurants for lunch. The McCaig tower is worth climbing to.

Mullmusings · 03/10/2025 08:31

Thanks. We do love seafood !

I find that Mull is one of those places where I can just sit and "be". This is the view of the mainland from our room one November at the Mull and Iona Spa Hotel when we went up for a family party. You get a similar view from the spa's hot tub.

If you're in to climbing you could climb Ben More. It's the highest point on the island and is a Monro.

Buy some Isle of Mull cheese and some Island Bakery biscuits. Expensive but yummy!

If you are at the bottom of the island pop over to Iona. Few mins on the ferry.

When is the rally? And what is it?

MrsMoastyToasty · 03/10/2025 09:06

The Rally is a car Rally. Loads of rally cars pelting around the island's single track roads.

MrsMoastyToasty · 03/10/2025 09:09

If you ever get chance to go up in April there's the Mull music festival too.
