For example when my uncle and aunt were on holiday we took a set-top there.

On holiday in my country, yes. In another country, no.

samarrange · 25/09/2025 21:43

What is a "set-top" here please?

Arlanymor · 25/09/2025 21:44

What’s a set top? People holidaying in my country yes - often actually as I live in a gorgeous place. But I’ve never gone on holiday to somewhere where other people were already on holiday. Nothing wrong with it but fairly unusual I would have thought.

We discovered that we were on holiday near DS and his family and arranged to meet up at a Butterfly Farm. 4 year old GD said ‘what are you doing on my holiday?’

Okiedokie123 · 25/09/2025 21:48

Commenting so I can join the crowd that want to know what a set top is!

ThePoshUns · 25/09/2025 22:21

Yes what on earth is a set top?

TokyoSushi · 25/09/2025 22:23

Here for the set top explanation!

Maddy70 · 25/09/2025 22:45

Not even Google is helping with set top

Smidge001 · 25/09/2025 23:35

Also here for the set top.
Do you mean a set top box? But I can't think why you'd be needing to drop one off to someone when they're on holiday!

So my friends were in Portugal for 3 months. Granted it wasn’t exactly a holiday as they were working remotely for most of the time, but I went to stay with them for a week!

Here for the set top explanation.

We went to visit my next door neighbour's parents in the South of France one year - they lived there and we were visiting. They had the grandkids of the summer so it was nice for dd to meet up with them - they phoned us up and invited us for lunch. Another year (before then) in the same area, we had bumped into them at a mini-golf.

Maybe she means pop top (campervan)?

SisSuffragette · 27/09/2025 20:52

My parents did a Europe driving trip one year when I was an older teenager who stayed at home working, I took a long weekend flew out and met them

No

Zonder · 28/09/2025 11:25

@OneUmberJoker please come back and tell us what a set top is. We all want to know.

We have met up with friends a couple of times when we all discovered we were going to be on holiday fairly near each other.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 28/09/2025 11:29

A friend of mine went to New Zealand for six months (career break to do some volunteer work) so I very kindly flew out for three weeks when she was between jobs to 'keep her company'.

tartyflette · 28/09/2025 11:45

We once holidayed near where our good friends were staying, in western France (not deliberately, just happened) but once we'd booked it and realised we made plans to meet up.
There were six of us and seven of them (seven adults and six children but no babies or toddlers,) going out to eat was fun - some restaurants took one look as we rocked up and immediately shook their heads.
The children were actually really well-behaved -all incipient foodies- and totally used to eating in nice restaurants.
We also visited each other in our respective villas.
It was a lovely holiday, everyone got on really well and I have fond memories of it but it was also quite full-on, I remember my DB and I ducking out of one trip to decompress and they had a wonderful day, doing wine tasting and going across the river on a little car ferry. Kids loved it.

CountryQueen · 28/09/2025 17:56

Pop top?

SeaAndStars · 28/09/2025 18:06

Could it be this? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Set-top_box

Chewbecca · 28/09/2025 18:25

Yes, but not with a set top (to my knowledge).

ohtowinthelottery · 28/09/2025 18:26

We were on holiday in France. Friends were also on holiday in France but 3 hours north of us. We each drove 11/2 hours to meet up in the middle and spend the day together.
Another couple of friends were on a cruise around the UK. One of their ports of call was a city about 1 hour from us that we know well (but they don't). We went and met them and spent a few hours showing them around the city.

Hoppinggreen · 28/09/2025 18:29

We were in Spain where we own a flat and DBro got a last minute holday to Portugal. SIL realised we were an hour away over the border and they came for the day
My Mum was with us and was delighted that we were all together as with all the DC it was always too complicated to arrange, plus my Bro can be a bit of a Dick.
We had a nice time and still have some great photos. My Mum had some on her wall

We were on holiday wheen the kids were little, at a small amusement type park/farm for kids, and a little girl came down the slide and I realised it was DH's brother's little girl. That was a coincidence! We found DH's brother and other daughter and then BIL went to find his wife, and she spent the rest of the time there avoiding us 😂 It was so odd. We didn't end up even seeing her before we had to leave the place, I don't think. It's never been spoken about. I'm not sure if she thought we were stalking them or something and it freaked her out but it wass a complete coincidence. We hadn't even known where they were staying.
