What is it with tiny beds in holiday cottages

When there’s clearly plenty of space in the room? Trying to book a UK break in October. We would like a super king, but at the very least need a king. But cottage after cottage is just double beds. Why? And you can’t even easily search for it, although I know I’m not the only one wanting a decent nights sleep.

YANBU! I have taken to bringing an extra mattress to go on the floor, a double is suitable for one person only. I have no idea how adults sleep every night sharing a double!

Darragon · 19/08/2025 17:38

It's because they've decorated for the cheapest price possible, and doubles are always cheaper. DH is 6'4" and doubles are too short for him, we need at least a king as they're longer. I wish more places had larger beds.

Ddakji · 19/08/2025 17:40

You’re right. The one we go to the most has a super king but most just have a standard double.

AirborneElephant · 19/08/2025 17:43

Yes, DH is tall and I’m somewhat overweight and menopausal so need space to throw covers off. A double is not going to cut it!

Totally agree. I can understand some tiny old cottages but in general I find most beds far too small.
DD has a double and there is no way two people can sleep there comfortable.

Seriously? You take a king sized mattress with you on holiday? 😮

DuckyLuck · 19/08/2025 17:45

I find that too. Also, small (2 seater) leather or pretend leather sofas. Too small and too cold

Katherineryan1986 · 19/08/2025 17:46

I’m surprised you’re finding this as we use holiday cottages a lot and often there is a king or super king, which is usually made up of 2 singles. Makes it more versatile for the host.

Flossflower · 19/08/2025 17:48

The first thing I look for is the size of the bed. A double just won’t do. I prefer a super king.

soupyspoon · 19/08/2025 17:51

Presumably getting the mattress up the stairs and into the room has to be a consideration for the owner when they are first kitting the room out. We chipped some f our hall ceiling and nearly gave ourselves an injury trying to get our king size mattress up the stairs

Additionally quite frankly, the bigger the bed, the bigger the task of changing it, swathes of duvet cover and sheet, need a machine big enough, need the space to dry it. A bit smaller makes that a bit easier.

That might not be the reason why but its what would spring to my mind.

Two singles. Zipped mattress topper for when it’s a super king. Job done.

(This is what’s in the holiday cottage we go to the most.)

No a single, one adult in the double, one in the single next to the bed! It’s a lightweight ikea one so easy to roll and transport.

JDM625 · 19/08/2025 18:05

I only book if they have a king or superking. DH is tall and I'm fat. Its a holiday after all to relax.

I also can't stand when the bed is pushed against a wall, so one of us either needs to climb over the other to bed in, or crawl up from the bottom of the bed like a dog!

Kellywiththelegs · 19/08/2025 18:08

It’s the same with sofas, tiny two seater things in the main, the first thing I look at in a holiday cottage is the sofa, if it’s not big enough for two to lounge on I’m not booking the cottage.

ObstreperousCushion · 19/08/2025 18:18

I’m always surprised how many people have kingsize beds. We have a double at home (small room), and it’s against a wall as no other options. I think it’s all a question of what you’re used to - but as two average sized, normal weight adults, we find it absolutely fine.

I certainly don’t care about the size of holiday cottage beds. As long as the bedding is clean and the mattress is firm, I’m happy.

DiordreBarlow · 19/08/2025 18:37

We stayed in a holiday cottage recently where we got second dibs on the bedroom. My brother and his wife had a palatial room and we got a room where the bed was in an alcove so we both had to climb out of the bottom of the bed.

I wont book anywhere where the bed is up one side of the wall.

doodleschnoodle · 19/08/2025 18:42

Once you’re used to a super king, going on holiday with a double feels like such a downgrade! Plus DH is 6ft 4 so his feet hang off the edge in smaller beds and I always bash into them when I get up for a wee in the night. A first world problem but a frustrating one.

ExcellentDesign · 19/08/2025 18:43

Maybe a lot of people don't mind, we don't.

NormaSears · 19/08/2025 18:45

XP was taller than 6'4" and the worst beds were the ones with a footboard. He would sleep diagonally.

Corrag · 19/08/2025 18:46

YANBU. The last time we stayed in a holiday cottage I slept in the twin room. My OH is a dreadful encroacher so sharing a double with him is impossible.

Ownerofbagpuss · 19/08/2025 18:53

We’re use to a super king here too, plus I have the spare room for when DH snores. So now we always book a cottage so we can have a room each. DH can snore for Britain especially if we’re away and he’s had a glass of wine or two, I’m also menopausal so not sleeping great. Recently I’ve only been using National Trust holiday cottages as they seem to have a very good standard when it comes to mattresses & bedding. Nothing too cheap and thin unlike some private holiday airbnbs we’ve used previously.

Fizbosshoes · 19/08/2025 18:58

I sleep in a double at home, im much shorter than average, DH is fairly averagely sized.
I find lots of holiday places have king size beds....and I do prefer it, but it obviously isn't ideal breaker for us to have a double bed.

Laiste · 19/08/2025 18:58

i agree - but worse still is when there are too many beds for the size of the rest of the house!

Last time we we went away we needed sleeping for 8 people and pics and blurb showed enough. But when we got there the room for the kids was on the ground floor with a huge window with no safety catches on it and it was too hot to have it closed ! Living room was a jumble of tiny, hard sofas which didn't seat us all.

Moaned about it in the review.

Laiste · 19/08/2025 19:00

Wrt choosing holiday home based on bed size - we have so many other considerations on a sliding scale that if we added bed size to the list we'd never find anywhere 🤣
