Special birthday holiday

Trixie2012 · 17/08/2025 13:51

Hi , if you could go anywhere for a milestone birthday where would it be
I’m going to be 50 next year & am so undecided.
I would love to go to Maldives , Mauritus or Antigua
but I’ve heard that there isn’t much in Maldives and the Mauritis . We might have our 19 year old dd with us . I was then thinking about a Caribbean cruise to see a few places .

I really wanted to visit Moscow & St Petersburg & sort of had it in mind for my 50th but clearly that was no longer on the cards when mine came around 😢

We went to Florence, which had special significance for us as we went there on our 1st holiday 20 years before & this time we had our 14 year dc with us

It was a v special trip.

We went to Paris for my dh's 50th which was also fantastic

MrsHamlet · 17/08/2025 14:19

I went to Hawaii for my 40th

BellaVita · 17/08/2025 14:20

For my 50th we went flew to New York for a week and then onto Hawaii for a further two weeks - DH, myself and two teens.

I am 60 this month and for this we are going to Greneda (but in November) although there will just be me and DH.

UncomfortableSilence · 17/08/2025 14:22

No ideas but following as I’m also 50 next year and we’ve said about doing the same. DDs will be 21 & 16 so was looking to incorporate DDs 21st too.

The only suggestion so far from the girls is New York but I’m not so keen so hoping for some different ideas….sorry to jump on your thread OP!

I've turned 50 this year. We did a family trip to Luca, Florence and Pisa. (A lovely mumsnetter suggested Luca.)
In October I am off to Venice with friends - can't wait.
A cruise might work well with DD in tow. Although would you all have to share a cabin and would that feel like a treat?

MellowPinkDeer · 17/08/2025 14:24

I’ve been to both the Maldives and Mauritius and they are both wonderful. Though in your case with a tagging along other adult I’d go somewhere less couples and romance and opt for a safari or something.

Four beautiful cities 😍
Hope you had a fabulous time!

jackstini · 17/08/2025 14:27

I have been to Mauritius and Maldives - both are beautiful (except the capital cities where you land!) A bit to do in Mauritius, Maldives is more ‘no news, no shoes’ great for doing nothing except eating, drinking, water sports. We did 2 islands to mix it up a bit. Or you could do Sri Lanka then Maldives

For my 50th we did New York, Washington DC and Florida - but no way I’d holiday in Trump US

A cruise is a good shout as you will see so many places

Safari/beach combo
Trans Canadian train with stops at both ends?
Costa Rica?

Can I ask how you found Luca? Am currently planning a trip to Florence and Pisa for my 50th. We’re only going for 4/5 days so wondering if it’s worth a day in Luca.

Mumdiva99 · 17/08/2025 14:55

@Disasterclass we went over Easter hols, 5 nights and stayed in Luca which was lovely. It was busier on the Saturday than during the week - but we went elsewhere on the Sat.
We liked that it was not too big within the walls, not too busy - so the teenagers could come and go without us worrying. We spent a day exploring Luca and walking out into the countryside, took the train to Florence for the day, joined in the Luca park run which the males in the family loved, went to the coast for a trip and went to Pisa for an afternoon. The whole trip was delightful and perfect for us. I was very glad it had been suggested to us as a base. There was a largish supermarket walking distance away - although we only went once then popped in the more local small ones. We ate out most nights so only really needed breakfast and snacks.

Caribbean cruise sounds like a good option as each day there’s something different to do but check likely weather - summer and autumn have hurricane risk

Trixie2012 · 10/11/2025 15:23

Thankyou for all your ideas , but I still can’t make up my mind the trouble being I don’t manage hot weather well so travelling during uk summer is a problem

A tour of Norway? So much variety of things to see there.

Apfelkuchen · 10/11/2025 16:51

What time of year would you like to travel? We went as a family to Japan and loved it. Maldives is beautiful but I would combine a week there with a trip to Sri Lanka.

TeamGeriatric · 10/11/2025 16:55

We are (Let's be honest I am) planning Namibia for my 50th next year. A family wedding, parenting 2 very small children and being on the cusp of moving countries totally overshadowed my 40th, so this one has got to be better!

Go to the Arctic! Svalbard is AMAZING. If you’ve got the funds go to Antarctic.

OhDear111 · 10/11/2025 20:57

I don’t do heat either so recommend Peru in our summer and definitely the Arctic. Antarctic is strictly Nov-March. Also Alaska, Norway and Iceland don’t get hot. Japan is very hot and humid in our summer. South Africa would be ok too. Lots to see and do there.

Holymolyguacamoledipsandchips · 10/11/2025 22:03

Yes how flexible is your travel window?

Did you stay in Luca for the duration and train it to all the places you visited for day trips only?

Namibia is incredible, the best holiday pre Covid.

AlexaBeQuiet · 10/11/2025 22:10

I went to NYC for my 40th and my garden all socially distanced under a gazebo for my 50th hoping the neighbours would not report me.

MinnieMountain · 11/11/2025 06:18

We went to Rome for my 40th. I’m hoping northern India for my 50th.

Be flexible with when you go OP. My DH wants a fancy ski trip for his 50th but he’s a summer birthday.

Yes. The train was so easy. Buy tickets on the trainline. We got the train from the airport to luca, direct train to Florence - a double decker train - i was excited. Lol. Train to Pisa and train to the coast.

Funderthighs · 11/11/2025 09:35

We did a cruise to the Norwegian Fjords. It was fantastic.

fluffiphlox · 11/11/2025 09:40

Safari. I can recommend Zambia.
