Hi , if you could go anywhere for a milestone birthday where would it be
I’m going to be 50 next year & am so undecided.
I would love to go to Maldives , Mauritus or Antigua
but I’ve heard that there isn’t much in Maldives and the Mauritis . We might have our 19 year old dd with us . I was then thinking about a Caribbean cruise to see a few places .

Yes. The train was so easy. Buy tickets on the trainline. We got the train from the airport to luca, direct train to Florence - a double decker train - i was excited. Lol. Train to Pisa and train to the coast.

Brilliant. I did a long weekend in Bologna in December and got the train to Venice for the day. Great way to see Venice without staying there, so cold but sunny with blue sky. Will certainly do what you have done. Trains are great.

Safari in South Africa is perfect for the UK summer - but go as top end as you can afford - you want the best possible guides, to ensure you have good access to the animals without it being a huge convoy.
For all those people asking about Lucca (spelt with a double C!), I would spend several days there, as there's plenty to see as well as easy access to other places by train.

I haven't been to Mauritius but The Maldives & Antigua are both gorgeous. It really all depends on what you like to do, the snorkelling and water activities in The Maldives are incredible. Antigua is beautiful & has more to do but depends on what your preferred activities are.

Barbados is beautiful and a bit more lively if your looking for a Caribbean type of holiday

To see Italy by train, in many ways Bologna is a better base. Lucca is more challenging to get to. Direct flights from uk to Bologna. Great hotels and restaurants and good trains to Ravenna, Parma, Modena, Ferrara and other cities such as Florence, Venice and Padua are all possible. However I wouldn’t go in the summer!

We flew to Pisa and it was only 1 train to Lucca. So worked for the places we went to.

Caribbean definitely. We have been to St Lucia, Barbados and currently in Antigua for Partners birthday. We prefer it this time of year, not too hot. Have been in March and found it too hot

For a 50th, I’d still seriously consider the Maldives, especially a north male atoll resort. It’s not just beach time – there’s snorkelling, water sports, island hopping and dolphin cruises, which your 19-year-old would enjoy too. Mauritius offers culture and adventure, while a Caribbean cruise suits those wanting variety. It really depends on whether you want relaxation or exploration.

OhDear111 · 05/02/2026 09:15

None of those. We are far more into culture and wildlife. We went to Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands for my 50th.

FriedFalafels · 05/02/2026 20:36

Italy is probably my favourite country and I’ve visited multiple times. However, if you don’t like heat, don’t visit in August (or even July). I’ve found April good for T-shirt and trouser weather. Trying May, possibly this year, for a warmer experience mixing in beach visits

OhDear111 · 05/02/2026 22:52

@Trixie2012 You don’t see much on a Caribbean cruise on a giant ship. Thousands of you spew out on small islands - the focus of the holiday is the ship.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 05/02/2026 23:13

I’m going to throw Singapore in to the ring. Lots of history and culture and, for the 19 year old, tons and tons of shopping.

Yes, it might be hot but all the malls are air conditioned and the MRT is excellent.

One of our stops was at The Barracks on Sentosa - some of their suites are bedrooms on seperate floors connected by an external staircase.

OhDear111 · 05/02/2026 23:15

The other option might be Brazil. Something very different and there’s beaches!

Aposterhasnoname · 05/02/2026 23:16

I did Thailand for my 40th, Australia for my 50th and planning Cambodia for my 60th.

if you don’t like heat how about Iceland?

Holymolyguacamoledipsandchips · 06/02/2026 16:51

21 - Egypt
30- New York
40- Japan
50 - Komodo
60 - planning Antarctic.

wondering if 70 I could go to space 😂

Have you decided OP?

tedibear · 06/02/2026 17:01

Mexico and New York. Did 3 nights new York and 9 nights in Cancun for my DH 30th. One of the best holidays. Busy few days followed by luxury & relaxation.
