Do you think some people are almost addicted to holidaysvand holiday planning?

Travelfairy · 11/07/2025 23:58

I think I am one of these people 🙈

I always have to have something to look forward to. I love travelling, not just holidaying. I love big road trips, exploring places off the beaten track etc but my kids tease me for booking a holiday on a holiday. I do this almost always 🙈 we are just back from a huge holiday touring around Canada. I already have a trip in Sept with DH & DD in Oct. Just squeezed in a short family break in Ireland before both of those for August bank holiday in Ireland (where we live).

Now looking at NYC for Dec 🙈 sometimes I wonder am I trying to escape my day to day life 🙈🙈

I’m exactly the same OP. Proudly addicted to travel. American road trips are my idea of heaven. I have driven coast to coast and would love to do it again tomorrow.

I got back from a week in Spain in June & I'm now planning Greece in early September which feels ages away. I’m ticking off the days. Then it’s a long-haul trip coming up this winter.

I absolutely do need something to look forward to in order to make working for a living feel worthwhile, and I will never understand people who prioritise buying mountains of pointless consumerist crap over seeing the world.

Holiday starts as soon as I’m through security! Get a spritz of perfume I don’t own on in the duty free shop, sitting in the lounge people watching and mooching around the shops. Only get to the gate 5 mins before it closes as know it’s another 20 mins at least before we head to the plane… only 75 days to our next trip x

Any tips for Canada trip planning OP?

Haven't been on holiday in 15yrs, but have been wanting to finally get this arranged.

cheezncrackers · 12/07/2025 18:27

Yes, completely agree @SpottyAardvark. I keep a travel spreadsheet to track our travel expenditure and it's by far our greatest outgoing for the year. I'd just rather be away than at home. We also love US road trips. I wish I knew some of you people IRL. Most people I know I have to keep a lid on my travel obsession, because they either can't afford it, so I have to shut up to be sensitive, or they're just not interested, or both.

I'm definitely a fully fledged member of the addicts club, although I'm currently having to go cold turkey due to escalating care responsibilities for elderly parents. Even a night away is impossible now so it could be a long few years.

Sending love 💐
This was me a couple of years ago and it’s really tough, but it’s worth it.
We only had one holiday booked in 18 months for this reason and it was to go our friends wedding but my mum and dad needed me more than I needed a holiday, Mum passed 8 days after their wedding, although we would’ve been home for the end, I don’t regret not going as I’d never get those days back.
When the time comes with Dad I’ll cancel anything in a heatbeat.

wwyd2021medicine · 12/07/2025 18:39

DH is the planner and booker and always likes a couple of overseas holidays booked in advance - a mixture of beach and cities.
We also love seaside breaks in the UK and these can be pretty basic - I'm not bothered as long as I get a decent breakfast and a clean room. We have had 2 in the last month and would've done so this weekend but the weather is too warm.

notanothersummercold · 12/07/2025 18:50

No almost about it!! Totally holiday addict!

DemonsandMosquitoes · 12/07/2025 19:00

Yep. We will have had seven foreign holidays this year. Get very twitchy if haven’t got one or two booked. It’s the best time of the year. Practising for retirement next year. Both my parents were dead by 70- live for today.

Seven!

Im jealous of people who find it easy to take annual leave.

My boss would frown on us taking more than one holiday in the summer.

I had one holiday in the summer and i know that she wont want me to take a big bit of annual leave again until Christmas.

I go on holiday at tradtionally unpopular times of the year, no one else is off usually.

Mid June is normally our latest, next one early September once the kids have gone back but we are late this year so have only just got back from one.

I'm curious why you even look at the Holidays board if you aren't interested.

I didn't actively look at it, the thread came up in Trending.

Oh yes me !!

We were skiing in Italy in January with the 5 teens / adults .
Did a weekend in Cruft's and then on to London for Oliver! in March with one daughter and son .

Then I went to Ikos Oceania with my girlfriends in April .
Heading to London , then Ljubljana and Lake Bled next week and then on to Saalbach the week after and back to Dublin through Vienna .

In August we do 4 days in St. Andrew's as the boys are golf mad ! And I loved the city ( went last year ) . 3 days and 4 musicals in London later in August with my daughter .

Iceland with my husband for October mid term. And the all 7 or us heading to the Dolomites for Christmas skiing !

Really , no wonder my house is falling apart and in need of much love !!!

We are mortgage free and have good pensions so I don't care and life is for living . I should probably be spending more on the house but no regrets really !!!

LunaTheCat · 13/07/2025 01:35

I love holidays.
Live in Southern Hemisphere so one long haul yearly .. usually to Europe.
In my country local holidays are really expensive.
This year I am going to Africa. .. long held dream. I used some unexpected inheritance to do ( also paid off mortgage so not completely irresponsible). I should have saved for my retirement but life can be very short.

I think people who do this are generally unsatisfied and unhappy, unable to live in the moment.

Well I for one am a very happy person - always got something to look forward to!

I’ve been there - but retired now so we can go away as often as we want to - except DH and I have to plan our trips around DS’s so there is someone there to look after the dog.

It’s train stations I really like - European ones. But I have no particular issue with airports and certainly don’t find them stressful like so many appear to.

Haven't been on holiday in 15yrs, but have been wanting to finally get this arranged.

Its absolutely amazing! The food has a very French flavour, the people are so genuinely nice and the whole place looks like a screen saver! Lol

We went to Vancouver for a few days then stayed a couple of nights in Cariboo, then a week in Whistler, it's stunning there and then back to Vancouver. We went to a Rodeo too, it was amazing. Any specific questions, just ask 😊

My dh is like this, we did New York last November and after Christmas we had booked London for the summer. Since we found ourselves with 2 weeks off together we booked a short break to Wales too (we are home 1 night between London & wales).
Another trip to London before Christmas with a day trip to Paris thrown in.
Longer term we want to visit New York again as well as Boston and New Orleans so I’m keeping dh busy researching that.

LivelyFinch · 15/07/2025 18:19

Out of interest how do people organise their holiday planning?

I'm using an Interrail ticket to travel Europe next year and so far I have 2 notebooks, an A4 file and a spreadsheet on the go. Plus numerous post it notes and different colored pens!

Any advice would be gratefully received as I'm used to package holidays so I'm a total planning novice.

Chewbecca · 15/07/2025 19:06

I book most hotels via booking.com so I can see all those reservations in one place.

I have all the airline apps so I can see my trips / boarding passes in there.

DH makes folders in his email account for each trip and copies confirmation emails into the relevant folder for all aspects of the trips, so as well as hotels and flights in there you can find car hire, transfer bookings, tours and tickets.

Finally for longer cruises or multi centre trips, I make a day spreadsheet with a row per day noting what we are doing each day and the booking/ payment status of it. This keeps evolving, just starting with ideas for each day, then options, then bookings and links!

How do you get annual leave off work so easily.

I have to put in requests for annual leave and it will be refused 2 out of 3 times, because other staff booked it off first.

I’m retired now but previously I used to book the majority of my holiday time as soon as the new annual leave allocation was given, and also I had time off outside of school holidays. When I did need school holidays I was very fortunate to have a term time contract. Less money but no issue with getting holiday time off.

OutandAboutMum1821 · 15/07/2025 19:21

OP I’m with you on this! I feel so inspired when I’m visiting somewhere different in the UK or abroad that yes, during one trip I’ll be just planning the next as I feel even more inspired whilst staying somewhere new!

I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface of where I’d love to visit, even countries I’ve been to a few places within I’d like to see more of, and it can feel disheartening wondering when/how to see it all. So I keep trying to think back over where I have been to appreciate it.

Hope you get to visit many more interesting places! 😊
