Do you think some people are almost addicted to holidaysvand holiday planning?

I think I am one of these people 🙈

I always have to have something to look forward to. I love travelling, not just holidaying. I love big road trips, exploring places off the beaten track etc but my kids tease me for booking a holiday on a holiday. I do this almost always 🙈 we are just back from a huge holiday touring around Canada. I already have a trip in Sept with DH & DD in Oct. Just squeezed in a short family break in Ireland before both of those for August bank holiday in Ireland (where we live).

Now looking at NYC for Dec 🙈 sometimes I wonder am I trying to escape my day to day life 🙈🙈

Wow, lots of fellow addicts here! I love hearing about other people's holidays too!

How do you get annual leave off work so easily.

I have to put in requests for annual leave and it will be refused 2 out of 3 times, because other staff booked it off first.

I’m lucky, there is only me that does my job, someone in the team will pick up anything urgent so I spend a week busily getting ahead of any deadlines due whilst I’m away and the rest waits until I get back. There are 7 of us in our department and we need a minimum of 2 to cover for anything urgent. (Only go down to 2 at Xmas and Easter usually)
My DH is similar, he just puts his out of office on and deals with anything when he gets back, anything urgent they’ll contact his boss.

Crushed23 · 12/07/2025 15:34

I think I might be an addict, yeah. I dedicate 8 weeks a year to travel (generous annual leave plus public holidays) and love planning what to do and where to go. I find travel exhilarating and my travel goals never stop expanding - the more I travel, the more I discover places I want to travel to.

MaryBerrysFannyHammock · 12/07/2025 15:38

Me! Fucking live for my holidays me. I do not live to work I work to live.

I have three coming up in quick succession and cannot wait

I think people who do this are generally unsatisfied and unhappy, unable to live in the moment.

I completely disagree with this.

For me it’s about getting the most out of life. There’s a world out there and I love to explore it. I can never take annual leave and just go nowhere - to me that’s a complete waste, and something I can do any random weekend.

I love holidays, & have as many as I can.
Isn't everyone the same ?

Hardly makes me an addict.

Of course we're not all the same. My house is my sanctuary, I've no desire to travel.

I just feel sad at all the places i will never get to see.

I wanted to see every country in europe. But im in my 40s now and i have only seen half of them.

I just get so little time off work

You have plenty of time. Look into all the different interail passes - it's a great way to max out the country count.
I am saving some of Europe for when long haul no longer appeals.

MadKittenWoman · 12/07/2025 15:57

Yes, we've retired so holidays are our main priority along with sorting out house jobs.

Tadahhh · 12/07/2025 16:20

We spend my income on travel. It’s not an addiction it’s enjoyment of life and seeing how others live theirs. I love people!

It is called wanderlust, not being able to live a normal life , always needing a fix and yes, it is a type of addiction - however most people are addicted to something, otherwise life would be too still

PollyCreo · 12/07/2025 16:32

Guilty as charged 🫣

I'm pretty limited due to budget and where Ryanair fly to from my small local airport but that makes it even more challenging 😅 I missed two holidays in 2023 due to illness but made up for it last year.

I've just booked flights to Greece in September with my friend and we're so excited, I even downloaded the Ferryscanner app 🛳️

Thats odd because everyone i know has to request to book off annual leave on a system. And it has to be approved.

Otherwise five people in one team could request the same week off, and there would be no one there to do the work.

Many of friends have not had annual leave approved.

Well i hope you know how lucky you are, and that doesn't happen in every job.

I am thinking of my last three jobs.

Job 1. We had to submit an online request for annual leave. It would only be approved if no one else had booked that date off already

My last job - the same. I submitted a request for a week in august. It was declined as too many other staff had already booked that week off.

My current job is the same. We apply and it is often denied

We have to request and have leave agreed too!!! We must just be lucky we manage to work it thru to be able to take what we've requested.

Kind of, instead of spending masses on holidays every year it’s all being saved to move abroad permanently. Holidays are fun but we want to spend our holidays coming back to visit family here and living in nice place instead of escaping to one.

Absolutely. I love travelling and have done some. Not interested going to the Caribean though or anything like that which has veneer for the westerners and then your local poor who live in shacks

however having your dream home in your dream destination is a holiday which will never end.

Crikeyalmighty · 12/07/2025 16:43

I must be one of the few who actually likes airports too - looking at the board of destinations, breakfast in a cafe, walking down onto the piers etc !! Nuts I know

VWT5 · 12/07/2025 16:50

Absolutely yes, though struggling sometimes with the Schengen Agreement, where we now only get 90 in each 180 days permitted travel in Europe currently - it’s sometimes tight to the deadline (and the risk of fines).

Breaking it up by adding in trips to Turkei (outside of Schengen area) which gives more opportunities.

Home only for the UK school holiday periods, otherwise awaaaaaay 😃

I love airport lounges if that counts?! But the airports themselves aren’t usually that bad either, and some are even quite nice. I didn’t mind the long-ish layover at Doha, for example.

Solotravelleragain · 12/07/2025 17:34

I'm definitely a fully fledged member of the addicts club, although I'm currently having to go cold turkey due to escalating care responsibilities for elderly parents. Even a night away is impossible now so it could be a long few years.

HolidayHattie · 12/07/2025 17:59

@IndigoBluey
I love the anticipation usually get super excited four weeks pre departure! I’ll take my case down, start holiday washing and folding, setting out toiletries, writing lots of lists! Such a buzz.

I'm the opposite! I love the initial research and I'm fine when I get there, but a week or two beforehand I get in a panic about it, sometimes wishing I hadn't even booked it. I hate packing.

I do too. I get overwhelmed a week before despite being quite well travelled then I'm OK again. It's all the stuff to do and check but this year partner did it all and it was great. Literally all I had to do was pack...now I know how good he's had it for years 🤣

I'm curious why you even look at the Holidays board if you aren't interested.

soupyspoon · 12/07/2025 18:12

Yes, without a doubt this is me. We have 4 main holidays a year, plus short holidays around all the bank holidays and I try to fit in another weekend in between as well, I consider all of these to be holidays even though I've seen people on here say different. I'm happy wherever, abroad, local, UK, just love going away

Blobbitymacblob · 12/07/2025 18:14

Yes - dh. I’d far rather put my efforts into improving our day to day life and nesting at home. But the plus side is that every holiday is meticulously organised and all I have to do is pack.

SweetChilliGirl · 12/07/2025 18:18

I'm a hopeless addict. I read guide books for fun. I'm counting down until my kids have finished university and my husband and I can take some serious time of work and shoulder our backpacks again. Until then, a week here, two weeks there will have to do. Three booked at the moment - two and a half weeks in the summer, a week in October and a week with friends next May.

genesis92 · 12/07/2025 18:19

Must be nice to have the money to do so.

cheezncrackers · 12/07/2025 18:24

I work in a team with very few people who have children and so most of them don't go away during school hols, because it's more expensive. I'm also massively more organised than anyone else, so I get my holiday requests in months in advance - they book them only a few weeks before 😁
