Most disappointing destination/holiday

For me, it was the Norwegian fjords. Not because they weren’t beautiful (what we saw of them, they were!) but because it was cold, rainy and foggy when we went. One town known for being very pretty was ridiculously busy and there was a cruise ship blocking the view from the restaurant we booked. We knew the prices were going to be high, but expected good quality… when you pay over £100 for a train ticket, you expect there to be toilet roll and soap in the toilets!

where have you been that was disappointing?

London. Compared to Edinburgh ( home town) just not beautiful at all.

Ibiza. A great example of humans ruining beautiful, stunning places on earth

New York. Similar to London. So busy, full of nutters, not much beauty apart from Central Park.

Liverpool2025 · 10/07/2025 15:48

Also Marrakesh - bad vibes, just seen as a cash cow. Not relaxing.

munchingmunch · 10/07/2025 15:48

Food was disgusting too.

I thought the food in Las Vegas was excellent. It was so diverse.

theyoungishman · 10/07/2025 15:48

Controversely I didn't love Japan! Everyone I know that's been seems to absolutely love it. Didn't love the food, found it way too crowded, especially Kyoto
The Canadian side of Niagara Falls- reminded me of Blackpool
LA, in particular Hollywood Boulevard. Dodgy AF.
Nice- expensive and pretty unfriendly. Best part of my trip to niece was taking a train to San Remo in Italy!

Glitchymn1 · 10/07/2025 15:49

Dubai. Behind all the glitz it’s just grimy.

lissie123 · 10/07/2025 15:49

Could not bear New York despite getting engaged there. Felt uncomfortable and depressing

Bali ☹️ it was a long way to go for disappointment!

Yup. Costa Del Sol for young Aussies! A sea filled with plastic too.

ZzzzCravingMum · 10/07/2025 15:53

Florence, one of the places I'd always wanted to go and it was a bit meh. Sienna on the other hand that we went to after Florence and I'd never considered was lovely.
Also Mykonos, we did go here with a cruise and there were 5 other boats in port. You couldn't move through the town, the children were almost knocked into the water multiple times, it was loud and overwhelming...I cried due to sensory overload!

Egypt was a hell hole.

Barcelona was a dump. I wasn't sure what I was supposed to be looking at.that was so beautiful.

Did you not visit any of Gaudi’s constructions? Casa Vincens, Parc Güell, Casa Batlló, La Padrera? Not even La Sagrada Familia? The architecture is stunning.

lindyloo57 · 10/07/2025 15:54

I love malta been many times when I could fly from my local airport, we'd hire a car and drive round the island visiting different villages, gozo is nice too much quieter.
But maderia is my favourite if you get out of funchal and go up in the mountains lots of fantastic views.

Tunisia.

Dirty, disappointing and generally felt unsafe. I’ve travelled extensively and that was the only place I left early.

Came on to say exactly the same! We really did not like it at all.

Costacoffeeplease · 10/07/2025 15:55

New Orleans - have me the creeps and we cancelled our hotel and left after a few hours

Santa Monica - we stayed at Shutters on the Beach and there were signs in the hotel warning us not to go onto the beach after dark. Lots of homeless people sleeping on the pavement and grass verges with their shopping trolleys full of belongings. Sad and menacing at the same time

Kefalonia. Nice food but pretty boring.
TBF I am not a beach holiday fan.

What a shame. I am not a beach holiday person either, but there is so much to see on Kefalonia if you have a car.

Visiting various old towns, Melissani caves with the boat ride underground, wine tasting, National park etc...

Our highlight was seeing the giant turtles in Argostoli harbour :-)

That's really sad you didn't have a good time 😔

I was very disappointed in Venice and we only went for a day (was going to multiple destinations in Italy), I found we were actually bored come afternoon.

I'm with you on this. Didn't help we were living in the Netherlands at the time so were over the whole canal thing.

We were staying in a campsite, everything closed in the afternoon with security going round to make sure no one was enjoying themselves.

Crikeyalmighty · 10/07/2025 15:59

Egypt for the fact we all had food poisoning after day 2 for a week and it was a flash hotel too - great snorkelling which my H managed on day 1 only but absolutely nothing else to do around us and the airport toilets were full of people being ill

Dubai- great accommodation but extremely expensive to eat or drink out at anywhere of reasonable quality - and its all about bling shopping - I’ve had far more enjoyable holidays with better food and drink at a quarter of the price in Puerto banus if I want hi rise and bling!

I wasn’t over thrilled with sorrento either- packed and expensive and not that high a standard either unless you paid a fortune.

I actually enjoyed Malta unlike others - we did it as a split centre with Gozo ( kempinski there is very nice) - I loved Valletta - Great War museum , did some nice boat trips , had some very good meals too and it was all rather reasonable . It’s not exactly pretty outside of Valleta ( which is) but I found lots to do . The st Julian’s areas not that nice and a bit iffy but Valleta itself was excellent .

Oh nooooo, I’m off there tomorrow for the weekend!!!!!!

I hope you have a great time. We've been to Norway countless times and it's just stunning.

Because you seemed to expect more than what was on offer? Surely you looked at the resort, its facilities etc. were you expecting clubs and shops selling loads of fake bags? Your disappointment was based on your ignorance of the type of resort it was 🤷‍♀️

Exactly, you go to the Maldives to lounge in lukewarm water, learn to dive, snorkel, sail ,windsurf, read good books and socialise with other escapees from the mayhem of life.
Sit on the jetty letting the colourful fish nibble at your toes and ruminate. Its an away from it all place to chill.

DrNo007 · 10/07/2025 16:02

Hong Kong. Totally built up with massive skyscrapers, can't see the sky. The people were terribly rude to me when I was on my own (I'm a Western woman), a bit more polite when I was with my husband, which I found very annoying. Never again.

Santorini is my biggest travel disappointment too. The sunset is beautiful but ruined by crowds of Americans loudly whooping at it and helicopters flying around the caldera. The food was the worst I’ve eaten in Greece too. My husband tried to put me off booking the stay as he’d been before and knew what it was like. I should have listened to him (the only time I’m willing to admit that).

I love Santorini, but I am a sucker for a beautiful sunset. The sunset really is the only thing that sets it apart from all the other stunning Greek islands to be honest. We could see it from our hotel room though, the crowds and queues to take a picture on the cliff tops in that heat would have totally killed it for me.

Praying4Peace · 10/07/2025 16:02

Sicilly
Dirty streets and extremely crowded

PracticallyPeapod · 10/07/2025 16:02

Frankfurt was very dull. Honestly nothing there of interest and it rained.

I also wouldn’t go back to the Amalfi coast. It’s really busy, expensive and Sorrento is quite tacky.

Crikeyalmighty · 10/07/2025 16:03

@Costacoffeeplease I know what you mean about Santa Monica- I used to love it but it’s gone down hill badly and whilst some will agree with this I personally don’t like the fact you can’t smoke ‘anywhere’ — so you end up with people huddled and popping up in the most unexpected places sneaking a cigarette and making you jump - it used to feel very casually upmarket - now to me it feels quite weird ( last went October 2023)

Charlotte120221 · 10/07/2025 16:04

Tunisia, too many lecherous males with no boundaries. Hot and smelly

I don't recall being ever disappointed by a destination. But then as a kid the furthest we went was Cornwall as my dad didn't like "foreign food".

There were a lot of holidays in North Wales, Blackpool and Scotland where there was a lot of sitting in the car/a caravan eating floppy sandwiches and drinking sweet milky lukewarm coffee from a Thermos flask, staring at the rain.

Anything I did after then seemed absolutely brilliant! Went to Playa de las Americas where a plague of cockroaches were also on their holidays and still had a great time.

You sound like my sort of person, brilliant attitude 👌
