Most disappointing destination/holiday

For me, it was the Norwegian fjords. Not because they weren’t beautiful (what we saw of them, they were!) but because it was cold, rainy and foggy when we went. One town known for being very pretty was ridiculously busy and there was a cruise ship blocking the view from the restaurant we booked. We knew the prices were going to be high, but expected good quality… when you pay over £100 for a train ticket, you expect there to be toilet roll and soap in the toilets!

where have you been that was disappointing?

Tell me more- was considering it. Is the nature not pretty at least?

The beaches were absolutely gorgeous! Best ive ever seen. We didnt like it because theres hardly anything to do at all! Whenever we tried to leave the resort we felt really unsafe, lots of drug problems in the streets etc. Cockroaches absolutely everywhere we went including running through restaurants.

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 12/07/2025 14:19

For me Paris, Cairo, Dublin and Marrakech.

SweetChilliGirl · 12/07/2025 15:05

I wouldn't rush back to Paraguay. Although I only spent time in the South. The Chaco might be interesting.

Crikeyalmighty · 12/07/2025 15:36

@JugglingMuggle I do agree about this- I think some don’t ever go off the well worn tourist sites - go and sit in cafes and bars in the leafier posher residential areas or the more youthful ‘regeneration areas’ - get into conversation with locals or the bar man - yep if you hang around the grim druggy bit of Amsterdam near the station asan example , it’s bit seedy - but pop to the Pipj and the huge weekend markets and the great bars and cafes or up to the Jordaan or nip on train to Haarlem and it’s lovely . It’s like going to London and mainly hanging around Oxford st - I would find it disappointing too - you need to find other city’s Richmonds, Camden or Shoreditch maybe ( if that’s your vibe) Notting Hill, Greenwich , Hampstead, Islington etc - in Vienna we found a fantastic shopping area and huge outdoor food market only 10 minutes from main tourist part of city. - you would have had to do a bit of research though - it wasn’t obvious as was where locals gravitated to

It's fascinating reading all the conflicting Marrakech posts! Those of you decrying the food... where the heck were you eating? We ate out every night and it was always nice and fresh. Lots of nice rooftop restaurants with "Assassin's creed" type views and beautiful lanterns and rugs. But if you preferred there were European style restaurants, pizza places.
I also found the people to be good humoured, and never felt unsafe.
If you can't see beyond a bit of smell and dirt to the sheer stunning amazingness of Marrakech, then frankly you have no soul!

I traveled with my daughter, 2 females and we didn't feel unsafe. We did a tour to Merzouga and then back to Marrakech having amazing food, hospitality and scenery. Honestly fell in love with Morroco its one of my favourite destinations in the world!

ArtTheClown · 12/07/2025 16:27

The 1990s were over a quarter of a century ago.

How does that make it offensive? It's a translated word - there's predominant style consensus on the spelling at present, that's all.
I don't see any need to scold the poor poster who used an alternative spelling.

Malta
Arrived at night, scorching hot. Woke up next day to torrential rain which carried on for the week.

Morning we were due to fly home, scorching hot.....

That was.many years ago

Crikeyalmighty · 12/07/2025 17:49

@HerVagestyTheQueef it’s one of my favourite places in terms of quality of the meals French/arabic mix - loved it!! And reasonable too , as you say lovely roof top feasts - Istanbul was similarly good food wise.

Im to comment just so I can save this post to take notes later!

This is brilliant !

New York wasnt as amazing as i hoped, I went twice, before and after 9/11. The aftermath was very sad to experience but the sense of hope was quite incredible
But in itself, I just wasnt blown away.

@Cheeryangel , it's haram. They are breaking one of the laws of Islam.

Well there's loads of Saudis doing it on a regular basis in Dubai and Bahrain as well as in London.

onehorserace · 12/07/2025 19:13

I think the problem with Mauritius is it pales in comparison with the Caribbean. The vibe of an Indian bar tender does match that of say an Antiguan one . 🤷‍♀️

Knowsley · 12/07/2025 19:37

@onehorserace ,maybe they do, but it is a fairly safe assumption to make that a Muslim doesn't drink alcohol.

Just for a little ChatGPT insight:

The correct and respectful spelling in English is Muslim.

  • ✅ Muslim is the standard and widely accepted spelling, referring to a follower of Islam.
  • ❌ Moslem is an older, now outdated variant. It is rarely used today and can be considered inaccurate or even offensive in some contexts because it was sometimes mispronounced or used with negative connotations.

Stick with “Muslim” in all formal, respectful, and modern usage.

Meant to say does NOT

We went to Riga for the Christmas Markets and couldn’t find them. It was drab, the restaurants closed at 9.30 and there whole atmosphere was one of Soviet Russia in the 1960s. The most exciting part of the trip was the evening we spent in the Central Police Station when my passport had been stolen. It’s the only part of the trip we ever talk about.

I was recently looking at Riga for the Christmas markets this year.. think I'll give it a miss!

This thread is about disappointing holidays. It’s not a “how to do holidays well thread”
I’m not sure it matters that people aren’t doing the backstreets or expecting a cocktail to taste like a cocktail in a Muslim country.

I thought the Sangrada Familiar was better 20 years ago. The interior was dark, half finished and looked liked something out of Lord if the Rings. The light polished version wasn’t half as good. I was disappointed.

Hmm why don't you read that again?.... can be considered inaccurate or even offensive in some contexts because it was sometimes mispronounced or used with negative connotations.

🤷🏼‍♂️

It's a little archaic, not offensive.

It’s not Moslem. Try to stop being so arrogant that you think you can dictate what Muslims call themselves.

Would you say Chrostians? Hondus? Jows? No, you wouldn’t. So don’t do it to Muslims.

ArtTheClown · 12/07/2025 21:57

This thread was more fun before the self-righteous scolding.

I'd almost rather go back to Dublin...

You wanted to post nonsense without being corrected. Not happening.

I posted no nonsense, I pointed out that you'd self-righteously berated some poor poster for using an archaic spelling version.
Was a fun thread until then.

ArtTheClown · 12/07/2025 23:14

I didn't hate it, but I was slightly underwhelmed by Munich city centre. I think people are right about expectation though as I'd expected it to be picture-perfect like Prague but it had quite a lot of modern buildings interspersed.
(obviously historic reasons though I guess).

Kellyklara · 12/07/2025 23:34

I think that most places are a bit crap.

The vast amount of buildings and towns were designed by men, and everywhere looks exactly the same. Boxy, square buildings.

I would love to go to go to a town that had circular dome houses .
