Most disappointing destination/holiday

For me, it was the Norwegian fjords. Not because they weren’t beautiful (what we saw of them, they were!) but because it was cold, rainy and foggy when we went. One town known for being very pretty was ridiculously busy and there was a cruise ship blocking the view from the restaurant we booked. We knew the prices were going to be high, but expected good quality… when you pay over £100 for a train ticket, you expect there to be toilet roll and soap in the toilets!

where have you been that was disappointing?

Morocco, really horrible experiences, in our group. Guys being hassled to buy drugs, women harassed sexually, groped, disrespected. Food very unappealing. Couldn’t wait to leave.

How do you know they don’t drink? Quite an assumption to make no?

To be fair, if they are observant Muslims they will never have tasted alcohol.

Knowsley · 12/07/2025 10:52

@Cheeryangel Muslims (observant ones) don't drink alcohol. It's hardly an assumption.

MissAmbrosia · 12/07/2025 10:56

I found Porto really disappointing. It was a long time ago though. I love Lisbon.

Kellyklara · 12/07/2025 11:10

I didn't like Porto either

Vancouver - apart from Stanley Park. We turned one corner down a street and it was literally like the zombie acopolyse- people without legs, teeth, eyes. Really bad homeless problem.

Absolutely. I was horrified by Vancouver. People drugged up all over the place and I saw one person shooting up next to the Gastown steam clock. No one seemed to be in the least bothered about all these people just lying around in the streets. Edmonton was even worse.

The landscapes and nature in Canada were amazing but the rest of it wasn't. I felt an undercurrent of disenchantment among the people, almost like something was waiting to explode and a massive chasm between the haves and the have-nots.

I liked Vancouver!

There were no druggies where I walked.

It seemed much better than my city in the UK which is absoluyely full of homeless people/drugged up people

Interesting that a few people, including the OP, mention Norway.
I am a massive Norway fan. I think I've been over 20 times now, winter and summer.
I do long distance hiking and cross country skiing. The nature is incredible and you can wander through swathes of untouched wilderness and see the most incredible scenery.
However, I'm not surprised people are disappointed in the fjords. I went there over 20 years ago and it was great but that area of Norway has become completely overrun with tourists and cruise ships. When I've driven through on the way somewhere else in recent years it's unbelievable how crowded it is.
Also, if the weather is shitty, as OP says, it's really miserable. If that happens to me when I'm hiking I'll usually stay in one of the self-service mountain cabins for a couple of days and it's really cosy. I'll do some jobs around the cabin, such as cleaning or chopping wood, or get to know others if anyone else is there and play board games.
I was disappointed by Lofoten - really shitty weather, hikes overrun with people and the same with beaches.

As for the Northern lights - all of that is a cunning marketing ploy. I have seen them a couple of times from huts and they were good but they don't appear the way you see them on all the photos on tourist websites and you have to be lucky to get a cloudless night and sufficient solar activity.

Not really…. 99% are Muslim. I’d be shocked if they did drink.

I think the laughing emoji might be deployed for your comment.

The only place I've been that you couldn't pay me to go back to was Amsterdam, the whole place just seemed really seedy and I couldn't wait to leave.

Quite a few places that have featured on this thread have been among my favourite trips. Morocco especially I don't get the level of hate - I found the people friendly and welcoming wherever we went, and definitely didn't get the level of hassle that others have reported (apart from one taxi driver in Casablanca). I also really liked Bali, but I didn't go to any of the resorts and spent my time cycling and walking in some of the inland villages, and then snorkelling in West Bali National Park which was incredible.

Solotravelleragain · 12/07/2025 11:24

Edit - somehow posted twice

OMG...we snorkeling there in Bali too. It was one of the best days of my life.
Such a contrast when we went to Nusa Lembongen and how crazy busy it was
..how people in the water didn't get hit by boats I'll never know

Helsinki. Was only there for 36 hours as was a christmas market break and did Riga and Tallinn 1st which we loved but didn't really enjoy Helsinki!

Also Turkey in August. The heat was just another level. Couldn't enjoy it properly unless we were sitting in the pool.

Seattle was like that when I went.

I know lots of Muslims that’s drink !
anyway the I initial comment re: bar staff was quite derogatory

Helsinki is brutal in December. It sits right on the Gulf of Finland and the gust from the sea makes your ears freeze off. I’m a Finn and wouldn’t go there in winter. But summer is wonderful there 😍

Knowsley · 12/07/2025 12:11

@Cheeryangel , it's haram. They are breaking one of the laws of Islam.

@ZippyBrick I agree about Oxford - we cut our visit short as we really didn't rate it. The colleges / library are lovely, and the kids loved Lyra's bench from His Dark Materials, but there wasn't much else there.

I'm not a huge fan of the Maldives either - it's beautiful and the staff are lovely, but I did get the feeling they secretly hate the tourists. The food looks good but tastes a bit 'long life', and a bunch of Moslem bar staff making cocktails tends to give exactly the result you'd expect :) I think I'd choose the Seychelles for relaxation and picture postcard beauty if I did the whole island paradise / ultimate relaxation thing again. At least you get giant tortoises there.

It’s Muslim, not Moslem. Try to be less offensive.

ArtTheClown · 12/07/2025 12:42

It's just an alternative spelling - Moslem was commonly used up until about the 1990s.

The 1990s were over a quarter of a century ago.

A quarter of a century is not that long.

It would be like saying that anyone over 25 is old!

Yes of course you do

HerVagestyTheQueef · 12/07/2025 13:03

1990 was actually 35 years ago.
And as an old gimmer, let me assure you that "Moslem" was not a common spelling even then. In my experience, at least.

Same, I will never forget the moment a turtle appeared and just swam alongside me. Just magical.
