Most disappointing destination/holiday

For me, it was the Norwegian fjords. Not because they weren’t beautiful (what we saw of them, they were!) but because it was cold, rainy and foggy when we went. One town known for being very pretty was ridiculously busy and there was a cruise ship blocking the view from the restaurant we booked. We knew the prices were going to be high, but expected good quality… when you pay over £100 for a train ticket, you expect there to be toilet roll and soap in the toilets!

where have you been that was disappointing?

Apart from a woman on Fremont Street dressed as a dominatrix trying to get people to pay her to take a photo with her, I didn't see anything even resembling actual solicitation. There were more people dressed as superheroes trying to get families to pay them for pics instead. Prostitution really does not have to feature at all.

I had a bit of fun with the machines and tables (it's Vegas!) but that didn't feature heavily for me either, tbh. And the laws governing the casinos about how much has to be won back overall per dollar in the house (at least 70 cents, if memory serves) made it an unexpectedly victorious experience. I actually made a profit but I quit while I was ahead. You usually do ok in blackjack if you respect the probabilities.

Honestly, what I loved most was the theatre and the absolute bonkersness of it. We came out of a Cirque du Soleil show, won some money, had some cocktails and found ourselves in a ridiculous Wild West style bar where we rode the mechanical bull and I got free drinks for hanging on while my friend got free drinks for falling off. Totally nuts.

Most definitely not for everyone, I agree. Can absolutely see why some people don't like it. I bloody loved it. Shameless OTT tack-o-rama with incredible live shows and theatre.

Edited

Takes all kinds to make a world. I guess if you are an extrovert who can lap it up and laugh at the absurdity of the place ( and optionally run in very little sleep) and enjoy it for what it is, the place makes a kind of sense. It’s my idea of hell.

Casablanca - walked out of the hotel to across the street and walked back never to leave the hotel again until 48hrs later when we had to leave for Marrakesh.

Casablanca sounds so evocative and romantic. Ingrid Bergman etc. I found a horror of modern urban planning, certainly in the area I stayed, relatively near the city centre. Beautiful park nearby, but the stroll there was grim. Love Marrakesh.

I loved Tunisia, but specifically the Roman ruins.
Not interested in beaches.

We hired a car, had a good guide book, and spent a week just driving and finding a new hotel each night and gawping at the astonishing ruins. Things that in Europe would be fenced off and have a gift shop and restaurant and cost an arm and a leg to see, were just out in the open completely abandoned and unattended.

Apparently the Roman ruins in Libya are even better, but I would not recommend going there to find out.

I really want to see Leptis Magna after touring Tunisia but as you say, maybe not a safe destination.

New York. I was really excited the first time and went out with several locals (my company has an office there) but I think it's just a big city with absolutely no charme.

Went back twice and it hasn't improved.

I loved Malta and Florence. But I find that it totally depends on your interest and the time of year.
We are history nerds and had a brilliant time in both locations, we were in Malta end of May and Florence end of September, great weather for exploring.

I feel this way about New York. It reminds me of a massive Canary Wharf, and I love London but Canary Wharf really isn’t my favourite bit.

Rachand23 · 10/07/2025 23:03

Just had a few days on the west coast of Scotland ……stunning scenery! I was amazed by all the trees! Far better than some of the world locations I have been to.

Cannes - even early in the day was full of spaced out people on the streets, really made us feel a bit wary. Shop staff were really rude.

We were in Barcelona recently which was ok, some great gluten free bakeries and restaurants!

Santorini and Mykonos very busy even in early May.
Istanbul - huge place, again so crowded, but interesting I thought.
Athens - really dodgy
Albania - poor though everyone drives a Mercedes!
We love Italy but they have all these weird rules about where you can sit on the beach.
I just find travelling post COVID everywhere has become so busy and overcrowded. Also lots of places like the Canary Islands have become rundown.

@EdithBond Casablanca wasn't filmed in Morocco.

Egypt was a hell hole.

Barcelona was a dump. I wasn't sure what I was supposed to be looking at.that was so beautiful.

I was really disappointed with Barcelona. Just felt really uneasy there. Being spat on from someone in a block of flats as I walked past was a particular low point.

This is what we did - October half term, stayed in a nice hotel, super quiet on that side of the island and did a boat trip to Oia.

We had a very cheap Teletext week in Santorini, it was ages ago and we loved it though couldn't understand the hype about Oia, it's a sunset much as you can see anywhere.

Frauhubert · 10/07/2025 23:07

Florida- what a dump.
Morocco& Egypt & Tunisia- smelly dump with the worst men this planet has ever produced.

And at this point in my life- any big busy city is hell for me, not interested in seeing stuff anymore, just want to relax in the countryside.

chachahide · 10/07/2025 23:10

@Lavenderfarmcottage
You know Africa isn’t all the same? And at the time it was entirely safe to travel, and I knew a few people who had been! It was very popular at the time with older British women going after young Gambian men (another thread entirely).

I was in Egypt 1 week before the Arab spring, again, totally safe when I was there and no warnings from the FCDO.

If you considered every single risk you’d never travel anywhere, you’d probably never leave your house.

That was completely the opposite experience I had of Malta! We went for 10 days and explored a different town/ancient site/museum/fort etc every day. Going back this year and there's loads more we want to see.

We only had one afternoon at the pool.

Same. I have had some great walking holidays there. Lots to see.

BoundaryGirl3939 · 10/07/2025 23:11

I felt London was a bit soulless and sad. Couldn't find anchor there as it was so vast and felt lost. I felt so invisible (I know I technically am invisible in a huge city but I didn't a sense of warmth or friendliness) even though no-one was horrible. It was just a weird feeling.

I felt that Edinburgh was beautiful, and the people very pleasant but I just didn't feel comfortable or entirly welcomed there either. I just couldn't relax and feel at home (I know its obvs not home but sometimes you feel at ease and other time you don't for no reason).

I know my reasons contradict each other and I may not be explaining myself properly.

alihyder · 10/07/2025 23:14

One of the most disappointing trips I’ve had was to Los Angeles. I thought it would be exciting and full of energy, like in the movies. However, when I arrived, it felt incredibly busy and somewhat overwhelming. The traffic was horrible, and the famous spots were so crowded that it was hard to enjoy them. Everything just felt a bit overrated. I was expecting something magical, but it didn’t happen. There were a few nice moments, but overall, it just wasn’t what I hoped for.

Sheggsie · 10/07/2025 23:16

Spain. Tried it three times. Not for me.

Knowsley · 10/07/2025 23:17

@EdithBond ,then why were you disappointed? (rhetorical question)

Ethina · 10/07/2025 23:18

Cape Verde.

Tell me more- was considering it. Is the nature not pretty at least?

jaundicedoutlook · 10/07/2025 23:20

Miami. Went there for work a few years back and booked a day of leave so I could explore on my own time. Was really looking forward to it.

Wished I hadn’t bothered. Whole place was dirty, full of sketchy vagrants, crap shopping, overpriced bad food, and the beach was like a municipal dump. Topped it off with literally the scariest ever Uber back to the airport, with a maniac driver who looked like a psycho, got road rage every 5 minutes, and gave off a vibe that made me genuinely concerned that I was going to end tied up in his boot.

krne · 10/07/2025 23:24

tartyflette · 10/07/2025 14:08

I didn't love Hanoi either, it was very dirty and the traffic was terrifying.
But in retrospect, after I had gotten over the culture shock, I'm glad we went, it was a real experience, so different. And the pollution made for spectacular sunsets...

I loved Hanoi for the craziness! It was just such a culture shock. DH wasn't keen for the same reasons as you though.
I've loved everywhere I've been but there are places I wouldn't necessarily rush back to, Miami being one. Only stayed there a couple of days though so probably missed out on the good bits.

Ethina · 10/07/2025 23:25

Barcelona is not worth the hype, it’s ok, definitely don’t need to go again. Aside from the gaudi stuff it looks like any other Spanish town.

Tunisia - went thirty years ago and it felt totally unsafe. Was chased through the souk by a group of men, literally had to run to get away, found shelter in a restaurant. Old men on the street would simply comment ‘sex’ as you walked past them. Happened multiple times. Taxi driver scammed us and was so menacing we felt we had no choice but to pay what he asked so ended up stranded with no cash, hitched a ride back into town with a package holiday tour bus who took pity on us

Theonewhogotthecake · 10/07/2025 23:26

Fuerteventura. Windy, ugly and a bit rubbish.

Malta - just wasn't enough to do and we were bored ! Beautiful island if you like to sit by the pool so it really depends what you like to on holiday.

Malta is for history lovers. It's been strategically pivotal for centuries. Confusing choice for a beach holiday, never saw any beaches myself! Did see Russell Crowe attempting to play guitar and sing one night though 🤔!

Unlike the UK, most beaches in Italy are privately owned, so you have to pay to go on them. Crap, isn't it!

We booked a very cheap last minute holiday to Fuerteventura. Too windy to enjoy sitting out, and our accommodation was fine but not very attractive. What saved the holiday was hiring a car and bikes for a few days. Got to go to some lovely restaurants and managed to find some slightly more sheltered beaches. I wouldn’t go back though.

Fuerteventura means strong wind!!!
