Most disappointing destination/holiday

For me, it was the Norwegian fjords. Not because they weren’t beautiful (what we saw of them, they were!) but because it was cold, rainy and foggy when we went. One town known for being very pretty was ridiculously busy and there was a cruise ship blocking the view from the restaurant we booked. We knew the prices were going to be high, but expected good quality… when you pay over £100 for a train ticket, you expect there to be toilet roll and soap in the toilets!

where have you been that was disappointing?

I felt really unsafe in Delhi, did a tour and the Taj Mahal was amazing to see but we got so harassed on the way too it I wouldn't want to go again.

Also Marrakesh - fine in the hotel and the souks were good to see but also felt unsafe there too.

Cape Verde.

For me it was Dubrovnik in Croatia, not because of the place but I couldn't cope with sheer amount of tourists there.
There were so many tour guides from different countries holding up their flag on a stick whilst taking groups of 30/40 people around. They took the place over, it was literally chest to chest with no space around you.
For the first time in my life I felt claustrophobic, you just couldn't appreciate the architecture or surroundings.
Didn't help that when we left to catch the bus there was a poor man vomiting all over the pavement, his wife was so distressed. Thank goodness I had a packet of tissues on me to give to her.
It just marred the experience for me....
BUT, the food in Croatia was amazing..

Classic MN - a tourist complaining about the sheer amount of tourists!

Honestly, reading threads like these it's obvious travel is wasted on so many people.

Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham all grim, full of stag parties and grey.

Brighton was so boring, very overrated.

Oxford was terrible too.

Only towns/Cities I've enjoyed visiting here are Bath and York.

I now live a 30 min train ride form Liverpool - it’s great …yep a bit loud and brash but full of life and loads of things to do . Yep, a few head parties but depends on where you hang out when out for the night. Easily avoided in many parts.

I went to Newcastle university, loved , loved my time there in the city . Ok, may have changed now, but was a great city to live in in mid 1980s

”courted” in Brighton during late 1980s…before all the queer culture kicked off. Agian a fabulous place to have on our doorstop..fantastic restaurant, shopping and nightlife. Shame if it’s gone downhill so much.

but I do agree bath and York are especially great !

I like Bologna as another destination. I always describe it as the cool younger sister of Florence. Also had the best tiramisu I have ever had in my life there.

Lucca is stunning and it's a lovely walk around the city walls.

I mention lucca earlier as a great place if not liking Florence…agreed wallsxwalk fantastic..especially after out lovely boozy lunch we had there !

Puerto Banús near Marbella.

I love Marbella, but Puerto Banús is the 'Marbs' you see on TV. It's full of the young crowd wearing next to nothing, and although the harbour front with the very expensive super yachts and other parts of it are lovely, there always feels to be a seedy underbelly to me. One street back from the harbour front is a dingy street with the kebab shops on and it felt quite scary to me. I don't know why, but it was dark and dinghy.

Now the actual town of Marbella is incredible. Gorgeous beaches, friendly locals, delicious food and a very chilled vibe. There are beautiful parks too.

I'm starting to think I got lucky every time I stayed in Paris as I've never felt unsafe there as a solo woman. It's not the cleanest but i've never found it depressing or menacing. I've heard there is a lot of street harassment and dodgy men that shout at you around the stations but that never happened to me, maybe as I was in the more touristy areas. Generally there's nowhere I'd rather travel solo than Paris!

MummyJ36 · 10/07/2025 22:37

Venice. Admittedly this was a solid 15 years ago but I truly couldn’t understand the hype. So touristy, very expensive and just 100% not worth it. Been to so many other places that have been a million times better. It reminded me of Disneyland.

Las Vegas. Actually had prostitutes approach us whilst in a bar asking if we wanted sex. This happened multiple times. The hotels are dated. Visiting the Grand Canyon was good though.

I’m amazed that people actually want to go to a place whose purpose is gambling, prostitution and tacky copies of European landmarks. And even more amazed to find they are surprised they don’t like it after all.

Barcelona was another city we didn’t particularly enjoy (again visited it as a day trip) but I think we planned the day badly (actually didn’t plan it at all). DH has no interest in going back as he doesn’t like Gaudi, but I would be happy to give it another go, perhaps with a friend.

I wasn’t wowed the first time but been back most years for my winter birthday.
I think it’s more that you can do whatever sort of holiday you like there. There’s a beach and all the hotels have pools if you like sunbathing or swimming. Theres excellent places to walk in the hills if that appeals. There’s countless museums on every subject. Theres bonkers Gaudi but also the old twisty dark quarter.

Food is good, wine is cheap!

I felt the same about Dubrovnik. Terrible victim if its own success. A harassing experience. Just because you are a tourist doesn’t mean you are ok being penned into a restricted space with a throng of other tourists, in a space lacking in any respite unless you want to pay over the odds for a coffee or a mineral water ( I mean higher than London prices).

RampantIvy · 10/07/2025 22:42

I'm struggling to believe people were bored in beautiful cities with so much art, architecture, history and culture, not to mention great good and drink.

However, I can understand the dislike of crowds and dirt and feeling unsafe.

New Orleans was one place where we didn't feel safe after dark.

I have visited and loved a lot of places that people dislike, but it was in the days before cheap flights and over tourism.

NapoleonsToe · 10/07/2025 22:44

I'm sad to read Santorini is so awful now. I went in the 80s, and it was incredible. Quiet (no proper airport and no cruise ships), such friendly people, atmospheric and peaceful. We stayed in touch with the owners of the place we rented, writing back and forth for years. The local souvlaki place wouldn't let us pay sometimes and we were invited into people's houses for coffee. Never saw a crowd, everywhere was calm, it was magical.

I hated the Isle of Wight, there was an undercurrent that made me very uncomfortable, not sure what it was.

Jamaica was beautiful but absolutely crimes ridden, I'd never go back - again this was the 80s, so you were travelling without much info on what places were like. Paphos, another place I'll never return to, soulless.

EdithBond · 10/07/2025 22:45

Pyramids at Giza. Wrongly assumed they were surrounded by desert.

Church of Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Jostling, factionalised, gaudy, Baroque assault on the senses surrounded by tat stalls.

SENNeeds2 · 10/07/2025 22:46

Casablanca - walked out of the hotel to across the street and walked back never to leave the hotel again until 48hrs later when we had to leave for Marrakesh.

I am really on the fence about Malta, the architecture looks lovely and I imagine as a long weekend where beaches are not the be all and end all, it might be fun. But I don't hear great things about the food at all, and that puts me right off. I looked at a Maltese cookery book recently, and it was odd and uninspiring to say the least. Everything seemed to be made with the same five ingredients and one of those was rabbit.

I have to say we didn't have one bad meal in Malta.

From delicious fresh pasta and pizza in valletta, wonderful fish, the traditional sandwiches. A salad to die for in Gozo. Even the sandwich and cake we shared in Medina which looked sure to be a tourist trap turned out to be wonderful.

I have so many pictures of food from that holiday it's embarrassing. There's 42 restaurants listed in the michelin guide. You can definitely eat well.

EllieEllie25 · 10/07/2025 22:49

@DemonsandMosquitoes @onehorserace I was going to suggest Skiathos too - you can be in a cafe by the harbour about 5 minutes after your plane lands and it's very cute. We went for a sailing holiday so didn't spend much time on the island but all the islands in that area are pretty and not too busy.

GoldenGail · 10/07/2025 22:50

London. Hate the place

I’m amazed that people actually want to go to a place whose purpose is gambling, prostitution and tacky copies of European landmarks. And even more amazed to find they are surprised they don’t like it after all.

Apart from a woman on Fremont Street dressed as a dominatrix trying to get people to pay her to take a photo with her, I didn't see anything even resembling actual solicitation. There were more people dressed as superheroes trying to get families to pay them for pics instead. Prostitution really does not have to feature at all.

I had a bit of fun with the machines and tables (it's Vegas!) but that didn't feature heavily for me either, tbh. And the laws governing the casinos about how much has to be won back overall per dollar in the house (at least 70 cents, if memory serves) made it an unexpectedly victorious experience. I actually made a profit but I quit while I was ahead. You usually do ok in blackjack if you respect the probabilities.

Honestly, what I loved most was the theatre and the absolute bonkersness of it. We came out of a Cirque du Soleil show, won some money, had some cocktails and found ourselves in a ridiculous Wild West style bar where we rode the mechanical bull and I got free drinks for hanging on while my friend got free drinks for falling off. Totally nuts.

Most definitely not for everyone, I agree. Can absolutely see why some people don't like it. I bloody loved it. Shameless OTT tack-o-rama with incredible live shows and theatre.

Crikeyalmighty · 10/07/2025 22:51

@IberianBlackout ah we’ve in Bath and you’ve mentioned my 3 favourite city’s- Bath, York and Liverpool, I also do like London a lot in certain parts -

Agadir, Morocco is the only holiday I have been on and could not get why anyone would go there. We ended up leaving our stuff in the room and booking a place for 2 nights in Taroudant to escape .Taroudant was lovely.

Don't big-up Taroudant, it will become popular!

Odiebay · 10/07/2025 22:58

Greece... Never had a good experience!
Been to Zante, Crete and Rhodes and had so many issues with the food and didn't rate the beaches at all.

DodoTired · 10/07/2025 22:59

I really disliked Delhi and Mumbai at my business trip 😰 Wanted to love them so much! But felt very unsafe, ugh

Ibiza was a total dissapointment

The Dominican Republic and Egypt - places where basically you are locked into a compound surrounded by poverty

Goa is like that too.
